John 12:37-50

MSG 37 All these God-signs he had given them and they still didn't get it, still wouldn't trust him. NIV 37 Even after Jesus had done all these miraculous signs in their presence, they still would not believe in him. MSG 38 This proved that the prophet Isaiah was right: God, who believed what we preached? Who recognized God's arm, outstretched and ready to act? NIV 38 This was to fulfill the word of Isaiah the prophet: "Lord, who has believed our message and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?" MSG 39 First they wouldn't believe, then they couldn't - again, just as Isaiah said: NIV 39 For this reason they could not believe, because, as Isaiah says elsewhere: MSG 40 Their eyes are blinded, their hearts are hardened, So that they wouldn't see with their eyes and perceive with their hearts, And turn to me, God, so I could heal them. NIV 40 "He has blinded their eyes and deadened their hearts, so they can neither see with their eyes, nor understand with their hearts, nor turn--and I would heal them." MSG 41 Isaiah said these things after he got a glimpse of God's cascading brightness that would pour through the Messiah. NIV 41 Isaiah said this because he saw Jesus' glory and spoke about him. MSG 42 On the other hand, a considerable number from the ranks of the leaders did believe. But because of the Pharisees, they didn't come out in the open with it. They were afraid of getting kicked out of the meeting place. NIV 42 Yet at the same time many even among the leaders believed in him. But because of the Pharisees they would not confess their faith for fear they would be put out of the synagogue; MSG 43 When push came to shove they cared more for human approval than for God's glory. NIV 43 for they loved praise from men more than praise from God. MSG 44 Jesus summed it all up when he cried out, "Whoever believes in me, believes not just in me but in the One who sent me. NIV 44 Then Jesus cried out, "When a man believes in me, he does not believe in me only, but in the one who sent me. MSG 45 Whoever looks at me is looking, in fact, at the One who sent me. NIV 45 When he looks at me, he sees the one who sent me. MSG 46 I am Light that has come into the world so that all who believe in me won't have to stay any longer in the dark. NIV 46 I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness. MSG 47 "If anyone hears what I am saying and doesn't take it seriously, I don't reject him. I didn't come to reject the world; NIV 47 "As for the person who hears my words but does not keep them, I do not judge him. For I did not come to judge the world, but to save it. MSG 48 I came to save the world. But you need to know that whoever puts me off, refusing to take in what I'm saying, is willfully choosing rejection. The Word, the Word-made-flesh that I have spoken and that I am, that Word and no other is the last word. NIV 48 There is a judge for the one who rejects me and does not accept my words; that very word which I spoke will condemn him at the last day. MSG 49 I'm not making any of this up on my own. The Father who sent me gave me orders, told me what to say and how to say it. NIV 49 For I did not speak of my own accord, but the Father who sent me commanded me what to say and how to say it. MSG 50 And I know exactly what his command produces: real and eternal life. That's all I have to say. What the Father told me, I tell you." NIV 50 I know that his command leads to eternal life. So whatever I say is just what the Father has told me to say."
