John 12:37-50

RSV 37 Though he had done so many signs before them, yet they did not believe in him; NIV 37 Even after Jesus had done all these miraculous signs in their presence, they still would not believe in him. RSV 38 it was that the word spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled: "Lord, who has believed our report, and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?" NIV 38 This was to fulfill the word of Isaiah the prophet: "Lord, who has believed our message and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?" RSV 39 Therefore they could not believe. For Isaiah again said, NIV 39 For this reason they could not believe, because, as Isaiah says elsewhere: RSV 40 "He has blinded their eyes and hardened their heart, lest they should see with their eyes and perceive with their heart, and turn for me to heal them." NIV 40 "He has blinded their eyes and deadened their hearts, so they can neither see with their eyes, nor understand with their hearts, nor turn--and I would heal them." RSV 41 Isaiah said this because he saw his glory and spoke of him. NIV 41 Isaiah said this because he saw Jesus' glory and spoke about him. RSV 42 Nevertheless many even of the authorities believed in him, but for fear of the Pharisees they did not confess it, lest they should be put out of the synagogue: NIV 42 Yet at the same time many even among the leaders believed in him. But because of the Pharisees they would not confess their faith for fear they would be put out of the synagogue; RSV 43 for they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God. NIV 43 for they loved praise from men more than praise from God. RSV 44 And Jesus cried out and said, "He who believes in me, believes not in me but in him who sent me. NIV 44 Then Jesus cried out, "When a man believes in me, he does not believe in me only, but in the one who sent me. RSV 45 And he who sees me sees him who sent me. NIV 45 When he looks at me, he sees the one who sent me. RSV 46 I have come as light into the world, that whoever believes in me may not remain in darkness. NIV 46 I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness. RSV 47 If any one hears my sayings and does not keep them, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world but to save the world. NIV 47 "As for the person who hears my words but does not keep them, I do not judge him. For I did not come to judge the world, but to save it. RSV 48 He who rejects me and does not receive my sayings has a judge; the word that I have spoken will be his judge on the last day. NIV 48 There is a judge for the one who rejects me and does not accept my words; that very word which I spoke will condemn him at the last day. RSV 49 For I have not spoken on my own authority; the Father who sent me has himself given me commandment what to say and what to speak. NIV 49 For I did not speak of my own accord, but the Father who sent me commanded me what to say and how to say it. RSV 50 And I know that his commandment is eternal life. What I say, therefore, I say as the Father has bidden me." NIV 50 I know that his command leads to eternal life. So whatever I say is just what the Father has told me to say."
