John 13

CJB 1 It was just before the festival of Pesach, and Yeshua knew that the time had come for him to pass from this world to the Father. Having loved his own people in the world, he loved them to the end. NIV 1 It was just before the Passover Feast. Jesus knew that the time had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he now showed them the full extent of his love. CJB 2 They were at supper, and the Adversary had already put the desire to betray him into the heart of Y'hudah Ben-Shim`on from K'riot. NIV 2 The evening meal was being served, and the devil had already prompted Judas Iscariot, son of Simon, to betray Jesus. CJB 3 Yeshua was aware that the Father had put everything in his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God. NIV 3 Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God; CJB 4 So he rose from the table, removed his outer garments and wrapped a towel around his waist. NIV 4 so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. CJB 5 Then he poured some water into a basin and began to wash the feet of the talmidim and wipe them off with the towel wrapped around him. NIV 5 After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples' feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him. CJB 6 He came to Shim`on Kefa, who said to him, "Lord! You are washing my feet?" NIV 6 He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, "Lord, are you going to wash my feet?" CJB 7 Yeshua answered him, "You don't understand yet what I am doing, but in time you will understand." NIV 7 Jesus replied, "You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand." CJB 8 "No!" said Kefa, "You will never wash my feet!" Yeshua answered him, "If I don't wash you, you have no share with me." NIV 8 "No," said Peter, "you shall never wash my feet." Jesus answered, "Unless I wash you, you have no part with me." CJB 9 "Lord," Shim`on Kefa replied, "not only my feet, but my hands and head too!" NIV 9 "Then, Lord," Simon Peter replied, "not just my feet but my hands and my head as well!" CJB 10 Yeshua said to him, "A man who has had a bath doesn't need to wash, except his feet -- his body is already clean. And you people are clean, but not all of you." NIV 10 Jesus answered, "A person who has had a bath needs only to wash his feet; his whole body is clean. And you are clean, though not every one of you." CJB 11 (He knew who was betraying him; this is why he said, "Not all of you are clean.") NIV 11 For he knew who was going to betray him, and that was why he said not every one was clean. CJB 12 After he had washed their feet, taken back his clothes and returned to the table, he said to them, "Do you understand what I have done to you? NIV 12 When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. "Do you understand what I have done for you?" he asked them. CJB 13 You call me `Rabbi' and `Lord,' and you are right, because I am. NIV 13 "You call me 'Teacher' and 'Lord,' and rightly so, for that is what I am. CJB 14 Now if I, the Lord and Rabbi, have washed your feet, you also should wash each other's feet. NIV 14 Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another's feet. CJB 15 For I have set you an example, so that you may do as I have done to you. NIV 15 I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. CJB 16 Yes, indeed! I tell you, a slave is not greater than his master, nor is an emissary greater than the one who sent him. NIV 16 I tell you the truth, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. CJB 17 If you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them. NIV 17 Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them. CJB 18 "I'm not talking to all of you -- I know which ones I have chosen. But the words of the Tanakh must be fulfilled that say, `The one eating my bread has turned against me.' NIV 18 "I am not referring to all of you; I know those I have chosen. But this is to fulfill the scripture: 'He who shares my bread has lifted up his heel against me.' CJB 19 I'm telling you now, before it happens; so that when it does happen, you may believe that I AM [who I say I am]. NIV 19 "I am telling you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe that I am He. CJB 20 Yes, indeed! I tell you that a person who receives someone I send receives me, and that anyone who receives me receives the One who sent me." NIV 20 I tell you the truth, whoever accepts anyone I send accepts me; and whoever accepts me accepts the one who sent me." CJB 21 After saying this, Yeshua, in deep anguish of spirit, declared, "Yes, indeed! I tell you that one of you will betray me." NIV 21 After he had said this, Jesus was troubled in spirit and testified, "I tell you the truth, one of you is going to betray me." CJB 22 The talmidim stared at one another, totally mystified -- whom could he mean? NIV 22 His disciples stared at one another, at a loss to know which of them he meant. CJB 23 One of his talmidim, the one Yeshua particu larly loved, was reclining close beside him. NIV 23 One of them, the disciple whom Jesus loved, was reclining next to him. CJB 24 So Shim`on Kefa motioned to him and said, "Ask which one he's talking about." NIV 24 Simon Peter motioned to this disciple and said, "Ask him which one he means." CJB 25 Leaning against Yeshua's chest, he asked Yeshua, "Lord, who is it?" NIV 25 Leaning back against Jesus, he asked him, "Lord, who is it?" CJB 26 Yeshua answered, "It's the one to whom I give this piece of matzah after I dip it in the dish." So he dipped the piece of matzah and gave it to Y'hudah Ben-Shim`on from K'riot. NIV 26 Jesus answered, "It is the one to whom I will give this piece of bread when I have dipped it in the dish." Then, dipping the piece of bread, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, son of Simon. CJB 27 As soon as Y'hudah took the piece of matzah, the Adversary went into him. "What you are doing, do quickly!" Yeshua said to him. NIV 27 As soon as Judas took the bread, Satan entered into him. "What you are about to do, do quickly," Jesus told him, CJB 28 But no one at the table understood why he had said this to him. NIV 28 but no one at the meal understood why Jesus said this to him. CJB 29 Some thought that since Y'hudah was in charge of the common purse, Yeshua was telling him, "Buy what we need for the festival," or telling him to give something to the poor. NIV 29 Since Judas had charge of the money, some thought Jesus was telling him to buy what was needed for the Feast, or to give something to the poor. CJB 30 As soon as he had taken the piece of matzah, Y'hudah went out, and it was night. NIV 30 As soon as Judas had taken the bread, he went out. And it was night. CJB 31 After Y'hudah had left, Yeshua said, "Now the Son of Man has been glorified, and God has been glorified in him. NIV 31 When he was gone, Jesus said, "Now is the Son of Man glorified and God is glorified in him. CJB 32 If the Son has glorified God, God will himself glorify the Son, and will do so without delay. NIV 32 If God is glorified in him, God will glorify the Son in himself, and will glorify him at once. CJB 33 Little children, I will be with you only a little longer. You will look for me; and, as I said to the Judeans, `Where I am going, you cannot come,' now I say it to you as well. NIV 33 "My children, I will be with you only a little longer. You will look for me, and just as I told the Jews, so I tell you now: Where I am going, you cannot come. CJB 34 "I am giving you a new command: that you keep on loving each other. In the same way that I have loved you, you are also to keep on loving each other. NIV 34 "A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. CJB 35 Everyone will know that you are my talmidim by the fact that you have love for each other." NIV 35 By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another." CJB 36 Shim`on Kefa said to him, "Lord, where are you going?" Yeshua answered, "Where I am going, you cannot follow me now; but you will follow later." NIV 36 Simon Peter asked him, "Lord, where are you going?" Jesus replied, "Where I am going, you cannot follow now, but you will follow later." CJB 37 "Lord," Kefa said to him, "why can't I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you!" NIV 37 Peter asked, "Lord, why can't I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you." CJB 38 Yeshua answered, "You will lay down your life for me? Yes, indeed! I tell you, before the rooster crows you will disown me three times. NIV 38 Then Jesus answered, "Will you really lay down your life for me? I tell you the truth, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times!
