John 13

NKJV 1 Now before the feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that His hour had come that He should depart from this world to the Father, having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end. NIV 1 It was just before the Passover Feast. Jesus knew that the time had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he now showed them the full extent of his love. NKJV 2 And supper being ended, the devil having already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray Him, NIV 2 The evening meal was being served, and the devil had already prompted Judas Iscariot, son of Simon, to betray Jesus. NKJV 3 Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into His hands, and that He had come from God and was going to God, NIV 3 Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God; NKJV 4 rose from supper and laid aside His garments, took a towel and girded Himself. NIV 4 so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. NKJV 5 After that, He poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded. NIV 5 After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples' feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him. NKJV 6 Then He came to Simon Peter. And Peter said to Him, "Lord, are You washing my feet?" NIV 6 He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, "Lord, are you going to wash my feet?" NKJV 7 Jesus answered and said to him, "What I am doing you do not understand now, but you will know after this." NIV 7 Jesus replied, "You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand." NKJV 8 Peter said to Him, "You shall never wash my feet!" Jesus answered him, "If I do not wash you, you have no part with Me." NIV 8 "No," said Peter, "you shall never wash my feet." Jesus answered, "Unless I wash you, you have no part with me." NKJV 9 Simon Peter said to Him, "Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head!" NIV 9 "Then, Lord," Simon Peter replied, "not just my feet but my hands and my head as well!" NKJV 10 Jesus said to him, "He who is bathed needs only to wash his feet, but is completely clean; and you are clean, but not all of you." NIV 10 Jesus answered, "A person who has had a bath needs only to wash his feet; his whole body is clean. And you are clean, though not every one of you." NKJV 11 For He knew who would betray Him; therefore He said, "You are not all clean." NIV 11 For he knew who was going to betray him, and that was why he said not every one was clean. NKJV 12 So when He had washed their feet, taken His garments, and sat down again, He said to them, "Do you know what I have done to you? NIV 12 When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. "Do you understand what I have done for you?" he asked them. NKJV 13 You call me Teacher and Lord, and you say well, for so I am. NIV 13 "You call me 'Teacher' and 'Lord,' and rightly so, for that is what I am. NKJV 14 If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. NIV 14 Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another's feet. NKJV 15 For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you. NIV 15 I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. NKJV 16 Most assuredly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master; nor is he who is sent greater than he who sent him. NIV 16 I tell you the truth, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. NKJV 17 If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them. NIV 17 Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them. NKJV 18 I do not speak concerning all of you. I know whom I have chosen; but that the Scripture may be fulfilled, 'He who eats bread with Me has lifted up his heel against Me.' NIV 18 "I am not referring to all of you; I know those I have chosen. But this is to fulfill the scripture: 'He who shares my bread has lifted up his heel against me.' NKJV 19 Now I tell you before it comes, that when it does come to pass, you may believe that I am He. NIV 19 "I am telling you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe that I am He. NKJV 20 Most assuredly, I say to you, he who receives whomever I send receives Me; and he who receives Me receives Him who sent Me." NIV 20 I tell you the truth, whoever accepts anyone I send accepts me; and whoever accepts me accepts the one who sent me." NKJV 21 When Jesus had said these things, He was troubled in spirit, and testified and said, "Most assuredly, I say to you, one of you will betray Me." NIV 21 After he had said this, Jesus was troubled in spirit and testified, "I tell you the truth, one of you is going to betray me." NKJV 22 Then the disciples looked at one another, perplexed about whom He spoke. NIV 22 His disciples stared at one another, at a loss to know which of them he meant. NKJV 23 Now there was leaning on Jesus' bosom one of His disciples, whom Jesus loved. NIV 23 One of them, the disciple whom Jesus loved, was reclining next to him. NKJV 24 Simon Peter therefore motioned to him to ask who it was of whom He spoke. NIV 24 Simon Peter motioned to this disciple and said, "Ask him which one he means." NKJV 25 Then, leaning back on Jesus' breast, he said to Him, "Lord, who is it?" NIV 25 Leaning back against Jesus, he asked him, "Lord, who is it?" NKJV 26 Jesus answered, "It is he to whom I shall give a piece of bread when I have dipped it." And having dipped the bread, He gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon. NIV 26 Jesus answered, "It is the one to whom I will give this piece of bread when I have dipped it in the dish." Then, dipping the piece of bread, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, son of Simon. NKJV 27 Now after the piece of bread, Satan entered him. Then Jesus said to him, "What you do, do quickly." NIV 27 As soon as Judas took the bread, Satan entered into him. "What you are about to do, do quickly," Jesus told him, NKJV 28 But no one at the table knew for what reason He said this to him. NIV 28 but no one at the meal understood why Jesus said this to him. NKJV 29 For some thought, because Judas had the money box, that Jesus had said to him, "Buy those things we need for the feast," or that he should give something to the poor. NIV 29 Since Judas had charge of the money, some thought Jesus was telling him to buy what was needed for the Feast, or to give something to the poor. NKJV 30 Having received the piece of bread, he then went out immediately. And it was night. NIV 30 As soon as Judas had taken the bread, he went out. And it was night. NKJV 31 So, when he had gone out, Jesus said, "Now the Son of Man is glorified, and God is glorified in Him. NIV 31 When he was gone, Jesus said, "Now is the Son of Man glorified and God is glorified in him. NKJV 32 If God is glorified in Him, God will also glorify Him in Himself, and glorify Him immediately. NIV 32 If God is glorified in him, God will glorify the Son in himself, and will glorify him at once. NKJV 33 Little children, I shall be with you a little while longer. You will seek Me; and as I said to the Jews, 'Where I am going, you cannot come,' so now I say to you. NIV 33 "My children, I will be with you only a little longer. You will look for me, and just as I told the Jews, so I tell you now: Where I am going, you cannot come. NKJV 34 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. NIV 34 "A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. NKJV 35 By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another." NIV 35 By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another." NKJV 36 Simon Peter said to Him, "Lord, where are You going?" Jesus answered him, "Where I am going you cannot follow Me now, but you shall follow Me afterward." NIV 36 Simon Peter asked him, "Lord, where are you going?" Jesus replied, "Where I am going, you cannot follow now, but you will follow later." NKJV 37 Peter said to Him, "Lord, why can I not follow You now? I will lay down my life for Your sake." NIV 37 Peter asked, "Lord, why can't I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you." NKJV 38 Jesus answered him, "Will you lay down your life for My sake? Most assuredly, I say to you, the rooster shall not crow till you have denied Me three times. NIV 38 Then Jesus answered, "Will you really lay down your life for me? I tell you the truth, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times!
