John 13

RSV 1 Now before the feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart out of this world to the Father, having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. NIV 1 It was just before the Passover Feast. Jesus knew that the time had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he now showed them the full extent of his love. RSV 2 And during supper, when the devil had already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray him, NIV 2 The evening meal was being served, and the devil had already prompted Judas Iscariot, son of Simon, to betray Jesus. RSV 3 Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going to God, NIV 3 Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God; RSV 4 rose from supper, laid aside his garments, and girded himself with a towel. NIV 4 so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. RSV 5 Then he poured water into a basin, and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel with which he was girded. NIV 5 After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples' feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him. RSV 6 He came to Simon Peter; and Peter said to him, "Lord, do you wash my feet?" NIV 6 He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, "Lord, are you going to wash my feet?" RSV 7 Jesus answered him, "What I am doing you do not know now, but afterward you will understand." NIV 7 Jesus replied, "You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand." RSV 8 Peter said to him, "You shall never wash my feet." Jesus answered him, "If I do not wash you, you have no part in me." NIV 8 "No," said Peter, "you shall never wash my feet." Jesus answered, "Unless I wash you, you have no part with me." RSV 9 Simon Peter said to him, "Lord, not my feet only but also my hands and my head!" NIV 9 "Then, Lord," Simon Peter replied, "not just my feet but my hands and my head as well!" RSV 10 Jesus said to him, "He who has bathed does not need to wash, except for his feet, but he is clean all over; and you are clean, but not every one of you." NIV 10 Jesus answered, "A person who has had a bath needs only to wash his feet; his whole body is clean. And you are clean, though not every one of you." RSV 11 For he knew who was to betray him; that was why he said, "You are not all clean." NIV 11 For he knew who was going to betray him, and that was why he said not every one was clean. RSV 12 When he had washed their feet, and taken his garments, and resumed his place, he said to them, "Do you know what I have done to you? NIV 12 When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. "Do you understand what I have done for you?" he asked them. RSV 13 You call me Teacher and Lord; and you are right, for so I am. NIV 13 "You call me 'Teacher' and 'Lord,' and rightly so, for that is what I am. RSV 14 If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. NIV 14 Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another's feet. RSV 15 For I have given you an example, that you also should do as I have done to you. NIV 15 I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. RSV 16 Truly, truly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master; nor is he who is sent greater than he who sent him. NIV 16 I tell you the truth, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. RSV 17 If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them. NIV 17 Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them. RSV 18 I am not speaking of you all; I know whom I have chosen; it is that the scripture may be fulfilled, 'He who ate my bread has lifted his heel against me.' NIV 18 "I am not referring to all of you; I know those I have chosen. But this is to fulfill the scripture: 'He who shares my bread has lifted up his heel against me.' RSV 19 I tell you this now, before it takes place, that when it does take place you may believe that I am he. NIV 19 "I am telling you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe that I am He. RSV 20 Truly, truly, I say to you, he who receives any one whom I send receives me; and he who receives me receives him who sent me." NIV 20 I tell you the truth, whoever accepts anyone I send accepts me; and whoever accepts me accepts the one who sent me." RSV 21 When Jesus had thus spoken, he was troubled in spirit, and testified, "Truly, truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me." NIV 21 After he had said this, Jesus was troubled in spirit and testified, "I tell you the truth, one of you is going to betray me." RSV 22 The disciples looked at one another, uncertain of whom he spoke. NIV 22 His disciples stared at one another, at a loss to know which of them he meant. RSV 23 One of his disciples, whom Jesus loved, was lying close to the breast of Jesus; NIV 23 One of them, the disciple whom Jesus loved, was reclining next to him. RSV 24 so Simon Peter beckoned to him and said, "Tell us who it is of whom he speaks." NIV 24 Simon Peter motioned to this disciple and said, "Ask him which one he means." RSV 25 So lying thus, close to the breast of Jesus, he said to him, "Lord, who is it?" NIV 25 Leaning back against Jesus, he asked him, "Lord, who is it?" RSV 26 Jesus answered, "It is he to whom I shall give this morsel when I have dipped it." So when he had dipped the morsel, he gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot. NIV 26 Jesus answered, "It is the one to whom I will give this piece of bread when I have dipped it in the dish." Then, dipping the piece of bread, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, son of Simon. RSV 27 Then after the morsel, Satan entered into him. Jesus said to him, "What you are going to do, do quickly." NIV 27 As soon as Judas took the bread, Satan entered into him. "What you are about to do, do quickly," Jesus told him, RSV 28 Now no one at the table knew why he said this to him. NIV 28 but no one at the meal understood why Jesus said this to him. RSV 29 Some thought that, because Judas had the money box, Jesus was telling him, "Buy what we need for the feast"; or, that he should give something to the poor. NIV 29 Since Judas had charge of the money, some thought Jesus was telling him to buy what was needed for the Feast, or to give something to the poor. RSV 30 So, after receiving the morsel, he immediately went out; and it was night. NIV 30 As soon as Judas had taken the bread, he went out. And it was night. RSV 31 When he had gone out, Jesus said, "Now is the Son of man glorified, and in him God is glorified; NIV 31 When he was gone, Jesus said, "Now is the Son of Man glorified and God is glorified in him. RSV 32 if God is glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself, and glorify him at once. NIV 32 If God is glorified in him, God will glorify the Son in himself, and will glorify him at once. RSV 33 Little children, yet a little while I am with you. You will seek me; and as I said to the Jews so now I say to you, 'Where I am going you cannot come.' NIV 33 "My children, I will be with you only a little longer. You will look for me, and just as I told the Jews, so I tell you now: Where I am going, you cannot come. RSV 34 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; even as I have loved you, that you also love one another. NIV 34 "A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. RSV 35 By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another." NIV 35 By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another." RSV 36 Simon Peter said to him, "Lord, where are you going?" Jesus answered, "Where I am going you cannot follow me now; but you shall follow afterward." NIV 36 Simon Peter asked him, "Lord, where are you going?" Jesus replied, "Where I am going, you cannot follow now, but you will follow later." RSV 37 Peter said to him, "Lord, why cannot I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you." NIV 37 Peter asked, "Lord, why can't I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you." RSV 38 Jesus answered, "Will you lay down your life for me? Truly, truly, I say to you, the cock will not crow, till you have denied me three times. NIV 38 Then Jesus answered, "Will you really lay down your life for me? I tell you the truth, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times!
