John 13

WBT 1 Now before the feast of the passover, when Jesus knew that his hour was come that he should depart out of this world to the Father, having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. NIV 1 It was just before the Passover Feast. Jesus knew that the time had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he now showed them the full extent of his love. WBT 2 And supper being ended (the devil having now put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's [son], to betray him;) NIV 2 The evening meal was being served, and the devil had already prompted Judas Iscariot, son of Simon, to betray Jesus. WBT 3 Jesus knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God, and was going to God; NIV 3 Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God; WBT 4 He riseth from supper, and laid aside his garments; and took a towel, and girded himself. NIV 4 so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. WBT 5 After that, he poured water into a basin, and began to wash the disciples feet, and to wipe [them] with the towel with which he was girded. NIV 5 After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples' feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him. WBT 6 Then he cometh to Simon Peter: and Peter saith to him, Lord, dost thou wash my feet? NIV 6 He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, "Lord, are you going to wash my feet?" WBT 7 Jesus answered and said to him, What I do thou knowest not now; but thou shalt know hereafter. NIV 7 Jesus replied, "You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand." WBT 8 Peter saith to him, Thou shalt never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me. NIV 8 "No," said Peter, "you shall never wash my feet." Jesus answered, "Unless I wash you, you have no part with me." WBT 9 Simon Peter saith to him, Lord, not my feet only, but also [my] hands and [my] head. NIV 9 "Then, Lord," Simon Peter replied, "not just my feet but my hands and my head as well!" WBT 10 Jesus saith to him, He that is washed needeth not save to wash [his] feet, but is wholly clean: and ye are clean, but not all. NIV 10 Jesus answered, "A person who has had a bath needs only to wash his feet; his whole body is clean. And you are clean, though not every one of you." WBT 11 For he knew who would betray him; therefore said he, Ye are not all clean. NIV 11 For he knew who was going to betray him, and that was why he said not every one was clean. WBT 12 So after he had washed their feet, and had taken his garments, and was set down again, he said to them, Know ye what I have done to you? NIV 12 When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. "Do you understand what I have done for you?" he asked them. WBT 13 Ye call me Master, and Lord: and ye say well; for [so] I am. NIV 13 "You call me 'Teacher' and 'Lord,' and rightly so, for that is what I am. WBT 14 If I then, [your] Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another's feet. NIV 14 Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another's feet. WBT 15 For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you. NIV 15 I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. WBT 16 Verily, verily, I say to you, The servant is not greater than his lord; neither he that is sent greater than he that sent him. NIV 16 I tell you the truth, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. WBT 17 If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them. NIV 17 Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them. WBT 18 I speak not of you all; I know whom I have chosen: but that the scripture may be fulfilled, He that eateth bread with me, hath lifted up his heel against me. NIV 18 "I am not referring to all of you; I know those I have chosen. But this is to fulfill the scripture: 'He who shares my bread has lifted up his heel against me.' WBT 19 Now I tell you before it cometh, that when it hath come to pass, ye may believe that I am [he]. NIV 19 "I am telling you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe that I am He. WBT 20 Verily, verily, I say to you, He that receiveth whomsoever I send, receiveth me; and he that receiveth me, receiveth him that sent me. NIV 20 I tell you the truth, whoever accepts anyone I send accepts me; and whoever accepts me accepts the one who sent me." WBT 21 When Jesus had thus said, he was troubled in spirit, and testified, and said, Verily, verily, I say to you, that one of you will betray me. NIV 21 After he had said this, Jesus was troubled in spirit and testified, "I tell you the truth, one of you is going to betray me." WBT 22 Then the disciples looked one on another, doubting of whom he spoke. NIV 22 His disciples stared at one another, at a loss to know which of them he meant. WBT 23 Now there was leaning on Jesus' bosom, one of his disciples, whom Jesus loved. NIV 23 One of them, the disciple whom Jesus loved, was reclining next to him. WBT 24 Simon Peter therefore beckoned to him, to ask who it should be of whom he spoke. NIV 24 Simon Peter motioned to this disciple and said, "Ask him which one he means." WBT 25 He then lying on Jesus' breast, saith to him, Lord, who is it? NIV 25 Leaning back against Jesus, he asked him, "Lord, who is it?" WBT 26 Jesus answered, He it is to whom I shall give a sop, when I have dipped [it]. And when he had dipped the sop, he gave [it] to Judas Iscariot, [the son] of Simon. NIV 26 Jesus answered, "It is the one to whom I will give this piece of bread when I have dipped it in the dish." Then, dipping the piece of bread, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, son of Simon. WBT 27 And after the sop Satan entered into him. Then said Jesus to him, What thou doest, do quickly. NIV 27 As soon as Judas took the bread, Satan entered into him. "What you are about to do, do quickly," Jesus told him, WBT 28 Now no man at the table knew for what intent he spoke this to him. NIV 28 but no one at the meal understood why Jesus said this to him. WBT 29 For some [of them] thought, because Judas had the bag, that Jesus had said to him, Buy [those things] that we have need of against the feast; or, that he should give something to the poor. NIV 29 Since Judas had charge of the money, some thought Jesus was telling him to buy what was needed for the Feast, or to give something to the poor. WBT 30 He then having received the sop, went immediately out: and it was night. NIV 30 As soon as Judas had taken the bread, he went out. And it was night. WBT 31 Therefore when he had gone out, Jesus said, Now is the Son of man glorified, and God is glorified in him. NIV 31 When he was gone, Jesus said, "Now is the Son of Man glorified and God is glorified in him. WBT 32 If God is glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself, and will immediately glorify him. NIV 32 If God is glorified in him, God will glorify the Son in himself, and will glorify him at once. WBT 33 Little children, yet a little while I am with you. Ye will seek me: and, as I said to the Jews, Whither I go, ye cannot come; so now I say to you. NIV 33 "My children, I will be with you only a little longer. You will look for me, and just as I told the Jews, so I tell you now: Where I am going, you cannot come. WBT 34 A new commandment I give to you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. NIV 34 "A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. WBT 35 By this shall all [men] know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another. NIV 35 By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another." WBT 36 Simon Peter said to him, Lord, whither goest thou? Jesus answered him, Whither I go, thou canst not follow me now; but thou shalt follow me afterward. NIV 36 Simon Peter asked him, "Lord, where are you going?" Jesus replied, "Where I am going, you cannot follow now, but you will follow later." WBT 37 Peter said to him, Lord, why cannot I follow thee now? I will lay down my life for thy sake. NIV 37 Peter asked, "Lord, why can't I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you." WBT 38 Jesus answered him, Wilt thou lay down thy life for my sake? Verily, verily, I say to thee, The cock will not crow, till thou hast denied me thrice. NIV 38 Then Jesus answered, "Will you really lay down your life for me? I tell you the truth, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times!
