John 16

CJB 1 "I have told you these things so that you won't be caught by surprise. NIV 1 "All this I have told you so that you will not go astray. CJB 2 They will ban you from the synagogue; in fact, the time will come when anyone who kills you will think he is serving God! NIV 2 They will put you out of the synagogue; in fact, a time is coming when anyone who kills you will think he is offering a service to God. CJB 3 They will do these things because they have understood neither the Father nor me. NIV 3 They will do such things because they have not known the Father or me. CJB 4 But I have told you this, so that when the time comes for it to happen, you will remember that I told you. I didn't tell you this at first, because I was with you. NIV 4 I have told you this, so that when the time comes you will remember that I warned you. I did not tell you this at first because I was with you. CJB 5 But now I am going to the One who sent me. "Not one of you is asking me, `Where are you going?' NIV 5 "Now I am going to him who sent me, yet none of you asks me, 'Where are you going?' CJB 6 Instead, because I have said these things to you, you are overcome with grief. NIV 6 Because I have said these things, you are filled with grief. CJB 7 But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I don't go away, the comforting Counselor will not come to you. However, if I do go, I will send him to you. NIV 7 But I tell you the truth: It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. CJB 8 "When he comes, he will show that the world is wrong about sin, about righteousness and about judgment -- NIV 8 When he comes, he will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment: CJB 9 about sin, in that people don't put their trust in me; NIV 9 in regard to sin, because men do not believe in me; CJB 10 about righteousness, in that I am going to the Father and you will no longer see me; NIV 10 in regard to righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer; CJB 11 about judgment, in that the ruler of this world has been judged. NIV 11 and in regard to judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned. CJB 12 "I still have many things to tell you, but you can't bear them now. NIV 12 "I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. CJB 13 However, when the Spirit of Truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own initiative but will say only what he hears. He will also announce to you the events of the future. NIV 13 But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. CJB 14 He will glorify me, because he will receive from what is mine and announce it to you. NIV 14 He will bring glory to me by taking from what is mine and making it known to you. CJB 15 Everything the Father has is mine; this is why I said that he receives from what is mine and will announce it to you. NIV 15 All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will take from what is mine and make it known to you. CJB 16 "In a little while, you will see me no more; then, a little while later, you will see me." NIV 16 "In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me." CJB 17 At this, some of the talmidim said to one another, "What is this that he's telling us, `In a little while, you won't see me; then, a little while later, you will see me'? and, `I am going to the Father'?" NIV 17 Some of his disciples said to one another, "What does he mean by saying, 'In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me,' and 'Because I am going to the Father'?" CJB 18 They went on saying, "What is this `little while'? We don't understand what he's talking about." NIV 18 They kept asking, "What does he mean by 'a little while'? We don't understand what he is saying." CJB 19 Yeshua knew that they wanted to ask him, so he said to them, "Are you asking each other what I meant by saying, `In a little while, you won't see me; and then, a little while later, you will see me'? NIV 19 Jesus saw that they wanted to ask him about this, so he said to them, "Are you asking one another what I meant when I said, 'In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me'? CJB 20 Yes, it's true. I tell you that you will sob and mourn, and the world will rejoice; you will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy. NIV 20 I tell you the truth, you will weep and mourn while the world rejoices. You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy. CJB 21 When a woman is giving birth, she is in pain; because her time has come. But when the baby is born, she forgets her suffering out of joy that a child has come into the world. NIV 21 A woman giving birth to a child has pain because her time has come; but when her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the world. CJB 22 So you do indeed feel grief now, but I am going to see you again. Then your hearts will be full of joy, and no one will take your joy away from you. NIV 22 So with you: Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy. CJB 23 "When that day comes, you won't ask anything of me! Yes, indeed! I tell you that whatever you ask from the Father, he will give you in my name. NIV 23 In that day you will no longer ask me anything. I tell you the truth, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name. CJB 24 Till now you haven't asked for anything in my name. Keep asking, and you will receive, so that your joy may be complete. NIV 24 Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete. CJB 25 "I have said these things to you with the help of illustrations; however, a time is coming when I will no longer speak indirectly but will talk about the Father in plain language. NIV 25 "Though I have been speaking figuratively, a time is coming when I will no longer use this kind of language but will tell you plainly about my Father. CJB 26 When that day comes, you will ask in my name. I am not telling you that I will pray to the Father on your behalf, NIV 26 In that day you will ask in my name. I am not saying that I will ask the Father on your behalf. CJB 27 for the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God. NIV 27 No, the Father himself loves you because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God. CJB 28 "I came from the Father and have come into the world; again, I am leaving the world and returning to the Father." NIV 28 I came from the Father and entered the world; now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father." CJB 29 The talmidim said to him, "Look, you're talking plainly right now, you're not speaking indirectly at all. NIV 29 Then Jesus' disciples said, "Now you are speaking clearly and without figures of speech. CJB 30 Now we know that you know everything, and that you don't need to have people put their questions into words. This makes us believe that you came from God." NIV 30 Now we can see that you know all things and that you do not even need to have anyone ask you questions. This makes us believe that you came from God." CJB 31 Yeshua answered, "Now you do believe. NIV 31 "You believe at last!" Jesus answered. CJB 32 But a time is coming -- indeed it has come already -- when you will be scattered, each one looking out for himself; and you will leave me all alone. Yet I am not alone; because the Father is with me. NIV 32 "But a time is coming, and has come, when you will be scattered, each to his own home. You will leave me all alone. Yet I am not alone, for my Father is with me. CJB 33 "I have said these things to you so that, united with me, you may have shalom. In the world, you have tsuris. But be brave! I have conquered the world!" NIV 33 "I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world."
