John 16

CSB 1 "I have told you these things to keep you from stumbling. NIV 1 "All this I have told you so that you will not go astray. CSB 2 They will ban you from the synagogues. In fact, a time is coming when anyone who kills you will think he is offering service to God. NIV 2 They will put you out of the synagogue; in fact, a time is coming when anyone who kills you will think he is offering a service to God. CSB 3 They will do these things because they haven't known the Father or Me. NIV 3 They will do such things because they have not known the Father or me. CSB 4 But I have told you these things so that when their time comes you may remember I told them to you. I didn't tell you these things from the beginning, because I was with you. NIV 4 I have told you this, so that when the time comes you will remember that I warned you. I did not tell you this at first because I was with you. CSB 5 "But now I am going away to Him who sent Me, and not one of you asks Me, 'Where are You going?' NIV 5 "Now I am going to him who sent me, yet none of you asks me, 'Where are you going?' CSB 6 Yet, because I have spoken these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart. NIV 6 Because I have said these things, you are filled with grief. CSB 7 Nevertheless, I am telling you the truth. It is for your benefit that I go away, because if I don't go away the Counselor will not come to you. If I go, I will send Him to you. NIV 7 But I tell you the truth: It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. CSB 8 When He comes, He will convict the world about sin, righteousness, and judgment: NIV 8 When he comes, he will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment: CSB 9 about sin, because they do not believe in Me; NIV 9 in regard to sin, because men do not believe in me; CSB 10 about righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you will no longer see Me; NIV 10 in regard to righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer; CSB 11 and about judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged. NIV 11 and in regard to judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned. CSB 12 "I still have many things to tell you, but you can't bear them now. NIV 12 "I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. CSB 13 When the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all the truth. For He will not speak on His own, but He will speak whatever He hears. He will also declare to you what is to come. NIV 13 But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. CSB 14 He will glorify Me, because He will take from what is Mine and declare it to you. NIV 14 He will bring glory to me by taking from what is mine and making it known to you. CSB 15 Everything the Father has is Mine. This is why I told you that He takes from what is Mine and will declare it to you. NIV 15 All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will take from what is mine and make it known to you. CSB 16 "A little while and you will no longer see Me; again a little while and you will see Me." NIV 16 "In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me." CSB 17 Therefore some of His disciples said to one another, "What is this He tells us: 'A little while and you will not see Me; again a little while and you will see Me' ; and, 'because I am going to the Father' ?" NIV 17 Some of his disciples said to one another, "What does he mean by saying, 'In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me,' and 'Because I am going to the Father'?" CSB 18 They said, "What is this He is saying, 'A little while' ? We don't know what He's talking about!" NIV 18 They kept asking, "What does he mean by 'a little while'? We don't understand what he is saying." CSB 19 Jesus knew they wanted to question Him, so He said to them, "Are you asking one another about what I said, 'A little while and you will not see Me; again a little while and you will see Me'? NIV 19 Jesus saw that they wanted to ask him about this, so he said to them, "Are you asking one another what I meant when I said, 'In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me'? CSB 20 "I assure you: You will weep and wail, but the world will rejoice. You will become sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn to joy. NIV 20 I tell you the truth, you will weep and mourn while the world rejoices. You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy. CSB 21 When a woman is in labor she has pain because her time has come. But when she has given birth to a child, she no longer remembers the suffering because of the joy that a person has been born into the world. NIV 21 A woman giving birth to a child has pain because her time has come; but when her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the world. CSB 22 So you also have sorrow now. But I will see you again. Your hearts will rejoice, and no one will rob you of your joy. NIV 22 So with you: Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy. CSB 23 In that day you will not ask Me anything. "I assure you: Anything you ask the Father in My name, He will give you. NIV 23 In that day you will no longer ask me anything. I tell you the truth, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name. CSB 24 Until now you have asked for nothing in My name. Ask and you will receive, that your joy may be complete. NIV 24 Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete. CSB 25 "I have spoken these things to you in figures of speech. A time is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures, but I will tell you plainly about the Father. NIV 25 "Though I have been speaking figuratively, a time is coming when I will no longer use this kind of language but will tell you plainly about my Father. CSB 26 In that day you will ask in My name. I am not telling you that I will make requests to the Father on your behalf. NIV 26 In that day you will ask in my name. I am not saying that I will ask the Father on your behalf. CSB 27 For the Father Himself loves you, because you have loved Me and have believed that I came from God. NIV 27 No, the Father himself loves you because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God. CSB 28 I came from the Father and have come into the world. Again, I am leaving the world and going to the Father." NIV 28 I came from the Father and entered the world; now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father." CSB 29 "Ah!" His disciples said. "Now You're speaking plainly and not using any figurative language. NIV 29 Then Jesus' disciples said, "Now you are speaking clearly and without figures of speech. CSB 30 Now we know that You know everything and don't need anyone to question You. By this we believe that You came from God." NIV 30 Now we can see that you know all things and that you do not even need to have anyone ask you questions. This makes us believe that you came from God." CSB 31 Jesus responded to them, "Do you now believe? NIV 31 "You believe at last!" Jesus answered. CSB 32 Look: An hour is coming, and has come, when each of you will be scattered to his own home, and you will leave Me alone. Yet I am not alone, because the Father is with Me. NIV 32 "But a time is coming, and has come, when you will be scattered, each to his own home. You will leave me all alone. Yet I am not alone, for my Father is with me. CSB 33 I have told you these things so that in Me you may have peace. You will have suffering in this world. Be courageous! I have conquered the world." NIV 33 "I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world."
