John 16

NLT 1 "I have told you these things so that you won't fall away. NIV 1 "All this I have told you so that you will not go astray. NLT 2 For you will be expelled from the synagogues, and the time is coming when those who kill you will think they are doing God a service. NIV 2 They will put you out of the synagogue; in fact, a time is coming when anyone who kills you will think he is offering a service to God. NLT 3 This is because they have never known the Father or me. NIV 3 They will do such things because they have not known the Father or me. NLT 4 Yes, I'm telling you these things now, so that when they happen, you will remember I warned you. I didn't tell you earlier because I was going to be with you for a while longer." NIV 4 I have told you this, so that when the time comes you will remember that I warned you. I did not tell you this at first because I was with you. NLT 5 "But now I am going away to the one who sent me, and none of you has asked me where I am going. NIV 5 "Now I am going to him who sent me, yet none of you asks me, 'Where are you going?' NLT 6 Instead, you are very sad. NIV 6 Because I have said these things, you are filled with grief. NLT 7 But it is actually best for you that I go away, because if I don't, the Counselor won't come. If I do go away, he will come because I will send him to you. NIV 7 But I tell you the truth: It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. NLT 8 And when he comes, he will convince the world of its sin, and of God's righteousness, and of the coming judgment. NIV 8 When he comes, he will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment: NLT 9 The world's sin is unbelief in me. NIV 9 in regard to sin, because men do not believe in me; NLT 10 Righteousness is available because I go to the Father, and you will see me no more. NIV 10 in regard to righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer; NLT 11 Judgment will come because the prince of this world has already been judged." NIV 11 and in regard to judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned. NLT 12 "Oh, there is so much more I want to tell you, but you can't bear it now. NIV 12 "I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. NLT 13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not be presenting his own ideas; he will be telling you what he has heard. He will tell you about the future. NIV 13 But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. NLT 14 He will bring me glory by revealing to you whatever he receives from me. NIV 14 He will bring glory to me by taking from what is mine and making it known to you. NLT 15 All that the Father has is mine; this is what I mean when I say that the Spirit will reveal to you whatever he receives from me." NIV 15 All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will take from what is mine and make it known to you. NLT 16 "In just a little while I will be gone, and you won't see me anymore. Then, just a little while after that, you will see me again." NIV 16 "In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me." NLT 17 The disciples asked each other, "What does he mean when he says, 'You won't see me, and then you will see me'? And what does he mean when he says, 'I am going to the Father'? NIV 17 Some of his disciples said to one another, "What does he mean by saying, 'In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me,' and 'Because I am going to the Father'?" NLT 18 And what does he mean by 'a little while'? We don't understand." NIV 18 They kept asking, "What does he mean by 'a little while'? We don't understand what he is saying." NLT 19 Jesus realized they wanted to ask him, so he said, "Are you asking yourselves what I meant? I said in just a little while I will be gone, and you won't see me anymore. Then, just a little while after that, you will see me again. NIV 19 Jesus saw that they wanted to ask him about this, so he said to them, "Are you asking one another what I meant when I said, 'In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me'? NLT 20 Truly, you will weep and mourn over what is going to happen to me, but the world will rejoice. You will grieve, but your grief will suddenly turn to wonderful joy when you see me again. NIV 20 I tell you the truth, you will weep and mourn while the world rejoices. You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy. NLT 21 It will be like a woman experiencing the pains of labor. When her child is born, her anguish gives place to joy because she has brought a new person into the world. NIV 21 A woman giving birth to a child has pain because her time has come; but when her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the world. NLT 22 You have sorrow now, but I will see you again; then you will rejoice, and no one can rob you of that joy. NIV 22 So with you: Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy. NLT 23 At that time you won't need to ask me for anything. The truth is, you can go directly to the Father and ask him, and he will grant your request because you use my name. NIV 23 In that day you will no longer ask me anything. I tell you the truth, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name. NLT 24 You haven't done this before. Ask, using my name, and you will receive, and you will have abundant joy." NIV 24 Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete. NLT 25 "I have spoken of these matters in parables, but the time will come when this will not be necessary, and I will tell you plainly all about the Father. NIV 25 "Though I have been speaking figuratively, a time is coming when I will no longer use this kind of language but will tell you plainly about my Father. NLT 26 Then you will ask in my name. I'm not saying I will ask the Father on your behalf, NIV 26 In that day you will ask in my name. I am not saying that I will ask the Father on your behalf. NLT 27 for the Father himself loves you dearly because you love me and believe that I came from God. NIV 27 No, the Father himself loves you because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God. NLT 28 Yes, I came from the Father into the world, and I will leave the world and return to the Father." NIV 28 I came from the Father and entered the world; now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father." NLT 29 Then his disciples said, "At last you are speaking plainly and not in parables. NIV 29 Then Jesus' disciples said, "Now you are speaking clearly and without figures of speech. NLT 30 Now we understand that you know everything and don't need anyone to tell you anything. From this we believe that you came from God." NIV 30 Now we can see that you know all things and that you do not even need to have anyone ask you questions. This makes us believe that you came from God." NLT 31 Jesus asked, "Do you finally believe? NIV 31 "You believe at last!" Jesus answered. NLT 32 But the time is coming -- in fact, it is already here -- when you will be scattered, each one going his own way, leaving me alone. Yet I am not alone because the Father is with me. NIV 32 "But a time is coming, and has come, when you will be scattered, each to his own home. You will leave me all alone. Yet I am not alone, for my Father is with me. NLT 33 I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world." NIV 33 "I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world."
