John 16

RSV 1 "I have said all this to you to keep you from falling away. NIV 1 "All this I have told you so that you will not go astray. RSV 2 They will put you out of the synagogues; indeed, the hour is coming when whoever kills you will think he is offering service to God. NIV 2 They will put you out of the synagogue; in fact, a time is coming when anyone who kills you will think he is offering a service to God. RSV 3 And they will do this because they have not known the Father, nor me. NIV 3 They will do such things because they have not known the Father or me. RSV 4 But I have said these things to you, that when their hour comes you may remember that I told you of them. "I did not say these things to you from the beginning, because I was with you. NIV 4 I have told you this, so that when the time comes you will remember that I warned you. I did not tell you this at first because I was with you. RSV 5 But now I am going to him who sent me; yet none of you asks me, 'Where are you going?' NIV 5 "Now I am going to him who sent me, yet none of you asks me, 'Where are you going?' RSV 6 But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your hearts. NIV 6 Because I have said these things, you are filled with grief. RSV 7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. NIV 7 But I tell you the truth: It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. RSV 8 And when he comes, he will convince the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: NIV 8 When he comes, he will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment: RSV 9 concerning sin, because they do not believe in me; NIV 9 in regard to sin, because men do not believe in me; RSV 10 concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no more; NIV 10 in regard to righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer; RSV 11 concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged. NIV 11 and in regard to judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned. RSV 12 "I have yet many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. NIV 12 "I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. RSV 13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. NIV 13 But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. RSV 14 He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. NIV 14 He will bring glory to me by taking from what is mine and making it known to you. RSV 15 All that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you. NIV 15 All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will take from what is mine and make it known to you. RSV 16 "A little while, and you will see me no more; again a little while, and you will see me." NIV 16 "In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me." RSV 17 Some of his disciples said to one another, "What is this that he says to us, 'A little while, and you will not see me, and again a little while, and you will see me'; and, 'because I go to the Father'?" NIV 17 Some of his disciples said to one another, "What does he mean by saying, 'In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me,' and 'Because I am going to the Father'?" RSV 18 They said, "What does he mean by 'a little while'? We do not know what he means." NIV 18 They kept asking, "What does he mean by 'a little while'? We don't understand what he is saying." RSV 19 Jesus knew that they wanted to ask him; so he said to them, "Is this what you are asking yourselves, what I meant by saying, 'A little while, and you will not see me, and again a little while, and you will see me'? NIV 19 Jesus saw that they wanted to ask him about this, so he said to them, "Are you asking one another what I meant when I said, 'In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me'? RSV 20 Truly, truly, I say to you, you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice; you will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn into joy. NIV 20 I tell you the truth, you will weep and mourn while the world rejoices. You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy. RSV 21 When a woman is in travail she has sorrow, because her hour has come; but when she is delivered of the child, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a child is born into the world. NIV 21 A woman giving birth to a child has pain because her time has come; but when her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the world. RSV 22 So you have sorrow now, but I will see you again and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you. NIV 22 So with you: Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy. RSV 23 In that day you will ask nothing of me. Truly, truly, I say to you, if you ask anything of the Father, he will give it to you in my name. NIV 23 In that day you will no longer ask me anything. I tell you the truth, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name. RSV 24 Hitherto you have asked nothing in my name; ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full. NIV 24 Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete. RSV 25 "I have said this to you in figures; the hour is coming when I shall no longer speak to you in figures but tell you plainly of the Father. NIV 25 "Though I have been speaking figuratively, a time is coming when I will no longer use this kind of language but will tell you plainly about my Father. RSV 26 In that day you will ask in my name; and I do not say to you that I shall pray the Father for you; NIV 26 In that day you will ask in my name. I am not saying that I will ask the Father on your behalf. RSV 27 for the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and have believed that I came from the Father. NIV 27 No, the Father himself loves you because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God. RSV 28 I came from the Father and have come into the world; again, I am leaving the world and going to the Father." NIV 28 I came from the Father and entered the world; now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father." RSV 29 His disciples said, "Ah, now you are speaking plainly, not in any figure! NIV 29 Then Jesus' disciples said, "Now you are speaking clearly and without figures of speech. RSV 30 Now we know that you know all things, and need none to question you; by this we believe that you came from God." NIV 30 Now we can see that you know all things and that you do not even need to have anyone ask you questions. This makes us believe that you came from God." RSV 31 Jesus answered them, "Do you now believe? NIV 31 "You believe at last!" Jesus answered. RSV 32 The hour is coming, indeed it has come, when you will be scattered, every man to his home, and will leave me alone; yet I am not alone, for the Father is with me. NIV 32 "But a time is coming, and has come, when you will be scattered, each to his own home. You will leave me all alone. Yet I am not alone, for my Father is with me. RSV 33 I have said this to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world." NIV 33 "I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world."
