John 16

YLT 1 `These things I have spoken to you, that ye may not be stumbled, NIV 1 "All this I have told you so that you will not go astray. YLT 2 out of the synagogues they will put you; but an hour doth come, that every one who hath killed you, may think to offer service unto God; NIV 2 They will put you out of the synagogue; in fact, a time is coming when anyone who kills you will think he is offering a service to God. YLT 3 and these things they will do to you, because they did not know the Father, nor me. NIV 3 They will do such things because they have not known the Father or me. YLT 4 `But these things I have spoken to you, that when the hour may come, ye may remember them, that I said [them] to you, and these things to you from the beginning I did not say, because I was with you; NIV 4 I have told you this, so that when the time comes you will remember that I warned you. I did not tell you this at first because I was with you. YLT 5 and now I go away to Him who sent me, and none of you doth ask me, Whither dost thou go? NIV 5 "Now I am going to him who sent me, yet none of you asks me, 'Where are you going?' YLT 6 but because these things I have said to you, the sorrow hath filled your heart. NIV 6 Because I have said these things, you are filled with grief. YLT 7 `But I tell you the truth; it is better for you that I go away, for if I may not go away, the Comforter will not come unto you, and if I go on, I will send Him unto you; NIV 7 But I tell you the truth: It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. YLT 8 and having come, He will convict the world concerning sin, and concerning righteousness, and concerning judgment; NIV 8 When he comes, he will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment: YLT 9 concerning sin indeed, because they do not believe in me; NIV 9 in regard to sin, because men do not believe in me; YLT 10 and concerning righteousness, because unto my Father I go away, and no more do ye behold me; NIV 10 in regard to righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer; YLT 11 and concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world hath been judged. NIV 11 and in regard to judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned. YLT 12 `I have yet many things to say to you, but ye are not able to bear [them] now; NIV 12 "I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. YLT 13 and when He may come -- the Spirit of truth -- He will guide you to all the truth, for He will not speak from Himself, but as many things as He will hear He will speak, and the coming things He will tell you; NIV 13 But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. YLT 14 He will glorify me, because of mine He will take, and will tell to you. NIV 14 He will bring glory to me by taking from what is mine and making it known to you. YLT 15 `All things, as many as the Father hath, are mine; because of this I said, That of mine He will take, and will tell to you; NIV 15 All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will take from what is mine and make it known to you. YLT 16 a little while, and ye do not behold me, and again a little while, and ye shall see me, because I go away unto the Father.' NIV 16 "In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me." YLT 17 Therefore said [some] of his disciples one to another, `What is this that he saith to us, A little while, and ye do not behold me, and again a little while, and ye shall see me, and, Because I go away unto the Father?' NIV 17 Some of his disciples said to one another, "What does he mean by saying, 'In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me,' and 'Because I am going to the Father'?" YLT 18 they said then, `What is this he saith -- the little while? we have not known what he saith.' NIV 18 They kept asking, "What does he mean by 'a little while'? We don't understand what he is saying." YLT 19 Jesus, therefore, knew that they were wishing to ask him, and he said to them, `Concerning this do ye seek one with another, because I said, A little while, and you do not behold me, and again a little while, and ye shall see me? NIV 19 Jesus saw that they wanted to ask him about this, so he said to them, "Are you asking one another what I meant when I said, 'In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me'? YLT 20 verily, verily, I say to you, that ye shall weep and lament, and the world will rejoice; and ye shall be sorrowful, but your sorrow joy will become. NIV 20 I tell you the truth, you will weep and mourn while the world rejoices. You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy. YLT 21 `The woman, when she may bear, hath sorrow, because her hour did come, and when she may bear the child, no more doth she remember the anguish, because of the joy that a man was born to the world. NIV 21 A woman giving birth to a child has pain because her time has come; but when her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the world. YLT 22 `And ye, therefore, now, indeed, have sorrow; and again I will see you, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no one doth take from you, NIV 22 So with you: Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy. YLT 23 and in that day ye will question me nothing; verily, verily, I say to you, as many things as ye may ask of the Father in my name, He will give you; NIV 23 In that day you will no longer ask me anything. I tell you the truth, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name. YLT 24 till now ye did ask nothing in my name; ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full. NIV 24 Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete. YLT 25 `These things in similitudes I have spoken to you, but there cometh an hour when no more in similitudes will I speak to you, but freely of the Father, will tell you. NIV 25 "Though I have been speaking figuratively, a time is coming when I will no longer use this kind of language but will tell you plainly about my Father. YLT 26 `In that day, in my name ye will make request, and I do not say to you that I will ask the Father for you, NIV 26 In that day you will ask in my name. I am not saying that I will ask the Father on your behalf. YLT 27 for the Father himself doth love you, because me ye have loved, and ye have believed that I from God came forth; NIV 27 No, the Father himself loves you because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God. YLT 28 I came forth from the Father, and have come to the world; again I leave the world, and go on unto the Father.' NIV 28 I came from the Father and entered the world; now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father." YLT 29 His disciples say to him, `Lo, now freely thou dost speak, and no similitude speakest thou; NIV 29 Then Jesus' disciples said, "Now you are speaking clearly and without figures of speech. YLT 30 now we have known that thou hast known all things, and hast no need that any one do question thee; in this we believe that from God thou didst come forth.' NIV 30 Now we can see that you know all things and that you do not even need to have anyone ask you questions. This makes us believe that you came from God." YLT 31 Jesus answered them, `Now do ye believe? lo, there doth come an hour, NIV 31 "You believe at last!" Jesus answered. YLT 32 and now it hath come, that ye may be scattered, each to his own things, and me ye may leave alone, and I am not alone, because the Father is with me; NIV 32 "But a time is coming, and has come, when you will be scattered, each to his own home. You will leave me all alone. Yet I am not alone, for my Father is with me. YLT 33 these things I have spoken to you, that in me ye may have peace, in the world ye shall have tribulation, but take courage -- I have overcome the world.' NIV 33 "I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world."
