John 19:28-42

RSV 28 After this Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said (to fulfil the scripture), "I thirst." NIV 28 Later, knowing that all was now completed, and so that the Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, "I am thirsty." RSV 29 A bowl full of vinegar stood there; so they put a sponge full of the vinegar on hyssop and held it to his mouth. NIV 29 A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus' lips. RSV 30 When Jesus had received the vinegar, he said, "It is finished"; and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit. NIV 30 When he had received the drink, Jesus said, "It is finished." With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit. RSV 31 Since it was the day of Preparation, in order to prevent the bodies from remaining on the cross on the sabbath (for that sabbath was a high day), the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away. NIV 31 Now it was the day of Preparation, and the next day was to be a special Sabbath. Because the Jews did not want the bodies left on the crosses during the Sabbath, they asked Pilate to have the legs broken and the bodies taken down. RSV 32 So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first, and of the other who had been crucified with him; NIV 32 The soldiers therefore came and broke the legs of the first man who had been crucified with Jesus, and then those of the other. RSV 33 but when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. NIV 33 But when they came to Jesus and found that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. RSV 34 But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once there came out blood and water. NIV 34 Instead, one of the soldiers pierced Jesus' side with a spear, bringing a sudden flow of blood and water. RSV 35 He who saw it has borne witness--his testimony is true, and he knows that he tells the truth--that you also may believe. NIV 35 The man who saw it has given testimony, and his testimony is true. He knows that he tells the truth, and he testifies so that you also may believe. RSV 36 For these things took place that the scripture might be fulfilled, "Not a bone of him shall be broken." NIV 36 These things happened so that the scripture would be fulfilled: "Not one of his bones will be broken," RSV 37 And again another scripture says, "They shall look on him whom they have pierced." NIV 37 and, as another scripture says, "They will look on the one they have pierced." RSV 38 After this Joseph of Arimathe'a, who was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly, for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus, and Pilate gave him leave. So he came and took away his body. NIV 38 Later, Joseph of Arimathea asked Pilate for the body of Jesus. Now Joseph was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly because he feared the Jews. With Pilate's permission, he came and took the body away. RSV 39 Nicode'mus also, who had at first come to him by night, came bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pounds' weight. NIV 39 He was accompanied by Nicodemus, the man who earlier had visited Jesus at night. Nicodemus brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds. RSV 40 They took the body of Jesus, and bound it in linen cloths with the spices, as is the burial custom of the Jews. NIV 40 Taking Jesus' body, the two of them wrapped it, with the spices, in strips of linen. This was in accordance with Jewish burial customs. RSV 41 Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb where no one had ever been laid. NIV 41 At the place where Jesus was crucified, there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb, in which no one had ever been laid. RSV 42 So because of the Jewish day of Preparation, as the tomb was close at hand, they laid Jesus there. NIV 42 Because it was the Jewish day of Preparation and since the tomb was nearby, they laid Jesus there.
