John 1:19-34

CEB 19 This is John's testimony when the Jewish leaders in Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him, "Who are you?" NIV 19 Now this was John's testimony when the Jews of Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him who he was. CEB 20 John confessed (he didn't deny but confessed), "I'm not the Christ." NIV 20 He did not fail to confess, but confessed freely, "I am not the Christ. " CEB 21 They asked him, "Then who are you? Are you Elijah?" John said, "I'm not." "Are you the prophet?" John answered, "No." NIV 21 They asked him, "Then who are you? Are you Elijah?" He said, "I am not." "Are you the Prophet?" He answered, "No." CEB 22 They asked, "Who are you? We need to give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?" NIV 22 Finally they said, "Who are you? Give us an answer to take back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself ?" CEB 23 John replied, "I am a voice crying out in the wilderness, Make the Lord's path straight, just as the prophet Isaiah said." NIV 23 John replied in the words of Isaiah the prophet, "I am the voice of one calling in the desert, 'Make straight the way for the Lord.' " CEB 24 Those sent by the Pharisees NIV 24 Now some Pharisees who had been sent CEB 25 asked, "Why do you baptize if you aren't the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the prophet?" NIV 25 questioned him, "Why then do you baptize if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?" CEB 26 John answered, "I baptize with water. Someone greater stands among you, whom you don't recognize. NIV 26 "I baptize with water," John replied, "but among you stands one you do not know. CEB 27 He comes after me, but I'm not worthy to untie his sandal straps." NIV 27 He is the one who comes after me, the thongs of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie." CEB 28 This encounter took place across the Jordan in Bethany where John was baptizing. NIV 28 This all happened at Bethany on the other side of the Jordan, where John was baptizing. CEB 29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, "Look! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! NIV 29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, "Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! CEB 30 This is the one about whom I said, ‘He who comes after me is really greater than me because he existed before me.' NIV 30 This is the one I meant when I said, 'A man who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.' CEB 31 Even I didn't recognize him, but I came baptizing with water so that he might be made known to Israel." NIV 31 I myself did not know him, but the reason I came baptizing with water was that he might be revealed to Israel." CEB 32 John testified, "I saw the Spirit coming down from heaven like a dove, and it rested on him. NIV 32 Then John gave this testimony: "I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him. CEB 33 Even I didn't recognize him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘The one on whom you see the Spirit coming down and resting is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.' NIV 33 I would not have known him, except that the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, 'The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is he who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.' CEB 34 I have seen and testified that this one is God's Son." NIV 34 I have seen and I testify that this is the Son of God."
