John 20

WYC 1 And in one day of the week Mary Magdalene came early to the grave, when it was yet dark [+Forsooth in one day of the sabbath, that is, of the week, Mary Magdalene came early, when darknesses were yet, at the grave]. And she saw the stone moved away from the grave. NIV 1 Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance. WYC 2 Therefore she ran, and came to Simon Peter, and to another disciple, whom Jesus loved, and saith to them, They have taken the Lord from the grave, and we know not, where they have laid him. NIV 2 So she came running to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one Jesus loved, and said, "They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don't know where they have put him!" WYC 3 Therefore Peter went out, and that other disciple, and they came to the grave. NIV 3 So Peter and the other disciple started for the tomb. WYC 4 And they twain ran together [Forsooth they two ran together], and that other disciple ran before Peter, and came first to the grave. NIV 4 Both were running, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. WYC 5 And when he stooped, he saw the sheets lying, nevertheless he entered not [in]. NIV 5 He bent over and looked in at the strips of linen lying there but did not go in. WYC 6 Therefore Simon Peter came following him, and he entered into the grave, and he saw the sheets laid, NIV 6 Then Simon Peter, who was behind him, arrived and went into the tomb. He saw the strips of linen lying there, WYC 7 and the sudarium that was on his head, not laid with the sheets, but by itself wrapped into a place. NIV 7 as well as the burial cloth that had been around Jesus' head. The cloth was folded up by itself, separate from the linen. WYC 8 Therefore then [and] that disciple that came first to the grave, entered, and saw, and believed. NIV 8 Finally the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went inside. He saw and believed. WYC 9 For they knew not yet the scripture, that it behooved him to rise again from death. [+Forsooth they knew not yet the scripture, for it behooved him to rise again from dead.] NIV 9 (They still did not understand from Scripture that Jesus had to rise from the dead.) WYC 10 Therefore the disciples went again to themselves. NIV 10 Then the disciples went back to their homes, WYC 11 But Mary stood at the grave withoutforth weeping. And while she wept, she bowed her(self), and beheld forth into the grave. NIV 11 but Mary stood outside the tomb crying. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb WYC 12 And she saw two angels sitting in white, one at the head and one at the feet, where the body of Jesus was laid. NIV 12 and saw two angels in white, seated where Jesus' body had been, one at the head and the other at the foot. WYC 13 And they say to her, Woman, what weepest thou? She said to them, For they have taken away my Lord, and I know not, where they have laid him. NIV 13 They asked her, "Woman, why are you crying?" "They have taken my Lord away," she said, "and I don't know where they have put him." WYC 14 When she had said these things, she turned backward [she turned aback], and saw Jesus standing, and knew not that it was Jesus. NIV 14 At this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not realize that it was Jesus. WYC 15 Jesus saith to her, Woman, what weepest thou? whom seekest thou? She guessing that he was the gardener, saith to him, Sire, if thou hast taken him up, say to me, where thou hast laid him, and I shall take him away. NIV 15 "Woman," he said, "why are you crying? Who is it you are looking for?" Thinking he was the gardener, she said, "Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will get him." WYC 16 Jesus saith to her, Mary. She turned, and saith to him, Rabboni, that is to say, Master. NIV 16 Jesus said to her, "Mary." She turned toward him and cried out in Aramaic, "Rabboni!" (which means Teacher). WYC 17 Jesus saith to her, Do not thou touch me, for I have not yet ascended to my Father; but go to my brethren, and say to them, I ascend to my Father and to your Father, to my God and to your God [and say to them, I ascend to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God]. NIV 17 Jesus said, "Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet returned to the Father. Go instead to my brothers and tell them, 'I am returning to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.' " WYC 18 Mary Magdalene came, telling to the disciples, That I saw the Lord, and these things he said to me. NIV 18 Mary Magdalene went to the disciples with the news: "I have seen the Lord!" And she told them that he had said these things to her. WYC 19 Therefore when it was even in that day [Therefore when eventide was in that day], [in] one of the sabbaths, and the gates were shut, where the disciples were gathered, for dread of the Jews, Jesus came, and stood in the middle of the disciples, and he saith to them, Peace to you [and said to them, Peace be to you]. NIV 19 On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you!" WYC 20 And when he had said this, he showed to them [his] hands and side; therefore the disciples joyed, for the Lord was seen. NIV 20 After he said this, he showed them his hands and side. The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord. WYC 21 And he saith to them again, Peace to you; as the Father sent me, I send you. [Therefore he said to them again, Peace to you; as the Father hath sent me, and I send you.] NIV 21 Again Jesus said, "Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you." WYC 22 When he had said this, he blew on them, and said, Take ye the Holy Ghost; NIV 22 And with that he breathed on them and said, "Receive the Holy Spirit. WYC 23 whose sins ye forgive, those be forgiven to them [they be forgiven]; and whose sins ye withhold, those be withheld [they be withholden]. NIV 23 If you forgive anyone his sins, they are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven." WYC 24 But Thomas, one of the twelve, that is said Didymus, was not with them, when Jesus came. NIV 24 Now Thomas (called Didymus), one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came. WYC 25 Therefore the other disciples said, We have seen the Lord. And he said to them, But I see in his hands the printing of the nails, and put my finger into the place of the nails, and put mine hand into his side, I shall not believe. [Forsooth he said to them, No but I shall see in his hands the fixing of nails, and shall send my finger into the places of the nails, and shall send mine hand into his side, I shall not believe.] NIV 25 So the other disciples told him, "We have seen the Lord!" But he said to them, "Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe it." WYC 26 And after eight days again his disciples were within, and Thomas with them. Jesus came, while the gates were shut [Jesus came, the gates shut], and stood in the middle, and said, Peace to you. NIV 26 A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you!" WYC 27 Afterward he saith to Thomas, Put in here thy finger, and see mine hands, and put hither thine hand, and put [it] into my side [Bring in hither thy finger, and see mine hands, and bring to thine hand, and send, or put, it into my side], and do not thou be unbelieveful, but faithful. NIV 27 Then he said to Thomas, "Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe." WYC 28 Thomas answered, and said to him, My Lord and my God. NIV 28 Thomas said to him, "My Lord and my God!" WYC 29 Jesus saith to him, Thomas, for thou hast seen me, thou believedest; blessed be they, that saw not, and have believed. NIV 29 Then Jesus told him, "Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed." WYC 30 And Jesus did many other signs in the sight of his disciples, which be not written in this book. [Forsooth and many other signs Jesus did in the sight of his disciples, the which be not written in this book.] NIV 30 Jesus did many other miraculous signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. WYC 31 But these be written, that ye believe, that Jesus is Christ, the Son of God, and that ye believing have life in his name. NIV 31 But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.
