RSV 1 Now on the first day of the week Mary Mag'dalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb. NIV 1 Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance. RSV 2 So she ran, and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, "They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him." NIV 2 So she came running to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one Jesus loved, and said, "They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don't know where they have put him!" RSV 3 Peter then came out with the other disciple, and they went toward the tomb. NIV 3 So Peter and the other disciple started for the tomb. RSV 4 They both ran, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first; NIV 4 Both were running, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. He saw the strips of linen lying there, RSV 7 and the napkin, which had been on his head, not lying with the linen cloths but rolled up in a place by itself. NIV 7 as well as the burial cloth that had been around Jesus' head. The cloth was folded up by itself, separate from the linen. RSV 8 Then the other disciple, who reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed; NIV 8 Finally the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went inside. He saw and believed. RSV 9 for as yet they did not know the scripture, that he must rise from the dead. NIV 9 (They still did not understand from Scripture that Jesus had to rise from the dead.) NIV 10 Then the disciples went back to their homes, RSV 11 But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb, and as she wept she stooped to look into the tomb; NIV 11 but Mary stood outside the tomb crying. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb RSV 12 and she saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had lain, one at the head and one at the feet. NIV 12 and saw two angels in white, seated where Jesus' body had been, one at the head and the other at the foot. RSV 13 They said to her, "Woman, why are you weeping?" She said to them, "Because they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him." NIV 13 They asked her, "Woman, why are you crying?" "They have taken my Lord away," she said, "and I don't know where they have put him." RSV 14 Saying this, she turned round and saw Jesus standing, but she did not know that it was Jesus. NIV 14 At this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not realize that it was Jesus. RSV 15 Jesus said to her, "Woman, why are you weeping? Whom do you seek?" Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to him, "Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away." NIV 15 "Woman," he said, "why are you crying? Who is it you are looking for?" Thinking he was the gardener, she said, "Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will get him." RSV 16 Jesus said to her, "Mary." She turned and said to him in Hebrew, "Rab-bo'ni!" (which means Teacher). NIV 16 Jesus said to her, "Mary." She turned toward him and cried out in Aramaic, "Rabboni!" (which means Teacher). RSV 17 Jesus said to her, "Do not hold me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to my brethren and say to them, I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God." NIV 17 Jesus said, "Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet returned to the Father. Go instead to my brothers and tell them, 'I am returning to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.' " RSV 18 Mary Mag'dalene went and said to the disciples, "I have seen the Lord"; and she told them that he had said these things to her. NIV 18 Mary Magdalene went to the disciples with the news: "I have seen the Lord!" And she told them that he had said these things to her. As the Father has sent me, I am sending you." RSV 22 And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit. NIV 24 Now Thomas (called Didymus), one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came. RSV 25 So the other disciples told him, "We have seen the Lord." But he said to them, "Unless I see in his hands the print of the nails, and place my finger in the mark of the nails, and place my hand in his side, I will not believe." NIV 25 So the other disciples told him, "We have seen the Lord!" But he said to them, "Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe it." RSV 26 Eight days later, his disciples were again in the house, and Thomas was with them. The doors were shut, but Jesus came and stood among them, and said, "Peace be with you." NIV 26 A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you!" RSV 27 Then he said to Thomas, "Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side; do not be faithless, but believing." NIV 27 Then he said to Thomas, "Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe." RSV 28 Thomas answered him, "My Lord and my God!" NIV 28 Thomas said to him, "My Lord and my God!" RSV 29 Jesus said to him, "Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe." NIV 29 Then Jesus told him, "Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed."
