CSB 1 After this, Jesus crossed the Sea of Galilee (or Tiberias). NIV 1 Some time after this, Jesus crossed to the far shore of the Sea of Galilee (that is, the Sea of Tiberias), CSB 2 And a huge crowd was following Him because they saw the signs that He was performing on the sick. NIV 2 and a great crowd of people followed him because they saw the miraculous signs he had performed on the sick. CSB 3 So Jesus went up a mountain and sat down there with His disciples. NIV 3 Then Jesus went up on a mountainside and sat down with his disciples. CSB 4 Now the Passover, a Jewish festival, was near. NIV 4 The Jewish Passover Feast was near. CSB 5 Therefore, when Jesus looked up and noticed a huge crowd coming toward Him, He asked Philip, "Where will we buy bread so these people can eat?" NIV 5 When Jesus looked up and saw a great crowd coming toward him, he said to Philip, "Where shall we buy bread for these people to eat?" CSB 6 He asked this to test him, for He Himself knew what He was going to do. NIV 6 He asked this only to test him, for he already had in mind what he was going to do. CSB 7 Philip answered, "Two hundred denarii worth of bread wouldn't be enough for each of them to have a little." NIV 7 Philip answered him, "Eight months' wages would not buy enough bread for each one to have a bite!" CSB 8 One of His disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, said to Him, NIV 8 Another of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, spoke up, CSB 9 "There's a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish-but what are they for so many?" NIV 9 "Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go among so many?" CSB 10 Then Jesus said, "Have the people sit down." There was plenty of grass in that place, so they sat down. The men numbered about 5,000. NIV 10 Jesus said, "Have the people sit down." There was plenty of grass in that place, and the men sat down, about five thousand of them. CSB 11 Then Jesus took the loaves, and after giving thanks He distributed them to those who were seated-so also with the fish, as much as they wanted. NIV 11 Jesus then took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed to those who were seated as much as they wanted. He did the same with the fish. CSB 12 When they were full, He told His disciples, "Collect the leftovers so that nothing is wasted." NIV 12 When they had all had enough to eat, he said to his disciples, "Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted." CSB 13 So they collected them and filled 12 baskets with the pieces from the five barley loaves that were left over by those who had eaten. NIV 13 So they gathered them and filled twelve baskets with the pieces of the five barley loaves left over by those who had eaten. CSB 14 When the people saw the sign He had done, they said, "This really is the Prophet who was to come into the world!" NIV 14 After the people saw the miraculous sign that Jesus did, they began to say, "Surely this is the Prophet who is to come into the world." CSB 15 Therefore, when Jesus knew that they were about to come and take Him by force to make Him king, He withdrew again to the mountain by Himself. NIV 15 Jesus, knowing that they intended to come and make him king by force, withdrew again to a mountain by himself. CSB 16 When evening came, His disciples went down to the sea, NIV 16 When evening came, his disciples went down to the lake, CSB 17 got into a boat, and started across the sea to Capernaum. Darkness had already set in, but Jesus had not yet come to them. NIV 17 where they got into a boat and set off across the lake for Capernaum. By now it was dark, and Jesus had not yet joined them. CSB 18 Then a high wind arose, and the sea began to churn. NIV 18 A strong wind was blowing and the waters grew rough. CSB 19 After they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea. He was coming near the boat, and they were afraid. NIV 19 When they had rowed three or three and a half miles, they saw Jesus approaching the boat, walking on the water; and they were terrified. CSB 20 But He said to them, "It is I. Don't be afraid!" NIV 20 But he said to them, "It is I; don't be afraid." CSB 21 Then they were willing to take Him on board, and at once the boat was at the shore where they were heading. NIV 21 Then they were willing to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat reached the shore where they were heading. CSB 22 The next day, the crowd that had stayed on the other side of the sea knew there had been only one boat. [They also knew] that Jesus had not boarded the boat with His disciples, but that His disciples had gone off alone. NIV 22 The next day the crowd that had stayed on the opposite shore of the lake realized that only one boat had been there, and that Jesus had not entered it with his disciples, but that they had gone away alone. CSB 23 Some boats from Tiberias came near the place where they ate the bread after the Lord gave thanks. NIV 23 Then some boats from Tiberias landed near the place where the people had eaten the bread after the Lord had given thanks. CSB 24 When the crowd saw that neither Jesus nor His disciples were there, they got into the boats and went to Capernaum looking for Jesus. NIV 24 Once the crowd realized that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they got into the boats and went to Capernaum in search of Jesus. CSB 25 When they found Him on the other side of the sea, they said to Him, "Rabbi, when did You get here?" NIV 25 When they found him on the other side of the lake, they asked him, "Rabbi, when did you get here?" CSB 26 Jesus answered, "I assure you: You are looking for Me, not because you saw the signs, but because you ate the loaves and were filled. NIV 26 Jesus answered, "I tell you the truth, you are looking for me, not because you saw miraculous signs but because you ate the loaves and had your fill. CSB 27 Don't work for the food that perishes but for the food that lasts for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you, because God the Father has set His seal of approval on Him." NIV 27 Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. On him God the Father has placed his seal of approval." CSB 28 "What can we do to perform the works of God?" they asked. NIV 28 Then they asked him, "What must we do to do the works God requires?" CSB 29 Jesus replied, "This is the work of God: that you believe in the One He has sent." NIV 29 Jesus answered, "The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent." CSB 30 "What sign then are You going to do so we may see and believe You?" they asked. "What are You going to perform? NIV 30 So they asked him, "What miraculous sign then will you give that we may see it and believe you? What will you do? CSB 31 Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, just as it is written: He gave them bread from heaven to eat. " NIV 31 Our forefathers ate the manna in the desert; as it is written: 'He gave them bread from heaven to eat.' " CSB 32 Jesus said to them, "I assure you: Moses didn't give you the bread from heaven, but My Father gives you the real bread from heaven. NIV 32 Jesus said to them, "I tell you the truth, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. CSB 33 For the bread of God is the One who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world." NIV 33 For the bread of God is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world." CSB 34 Then they said, "Sir, give us this bread always!" NIV 34 "Sir," they said, "from now on give us this bread." CSB 35 "I am the bread of life," Jesus told them. "No one who comes to Me will ever be hungry, and no one who believes in Me will ever be thirsty again. NIV 35 Then Jesus declared, "I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty. CSB 36 But as I told you, you've seen Me, and yet you do not believe. NIV 36 But as I told you, you have seen me and still you do not believe. CSB 37 Everyone the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will never cast out. NIV 37 All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away. CSB 38 For I have come down from heaven, not to do My will, but the will of Him who sent Me. NIV 38 For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me. CSB 39 This is the will of Him who sent Me: that I should lose none of those He has given Me but should raise them up on the last day. NIV 39 And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all that he has given me, but raise them up at the last day. CSB 40 For this is the will of My Father: that everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him may have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day." NIV 40 For my Father's will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day." CSB 41 Therefore the Jews started complaining about Him, because He said, "I am the bread that came down from heaven." NIV 41 At this the Jews began to grumble about him because he said, "I am the bread that came down from heaven." CSB 42 They were saying, "Isn't this Jesus the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How can He now say, 'I have come down from heaven' ?" NIV 42 They said, "Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How can he now say, 'I came down from heaven'?" CSB 43 Jesus answered them, "Stop complaining among yourselves. NIV 43 "Stop grumbling among yourselves," Jesus answered. CSB 44 No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him, and I will raise him up on the last day. NIV 44 "No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him, and I will raise him up at the last day. CSB 45 It is written in the Prophets: And they will all be taught by God. Everyone who has listened to and learned from the Father comes to Me- NIV 45 It is written in the Prophets: 'They will all be taught by God.' Everyone who listens to the Father and learns from him comes to me. CSB 46 not that anyone has seen the Father except the One who is from God. He has seen the Father. NIV 46 No one has seen the Father except the one who is from God; only he has seen the Father. CSB 47 "I assure you: Anyone who believes has eternal life. NIV 47 I tell you the truth, he who believes has everlasting life. CSB 48 I am the bread of life. NIV 48 I am the bread of life. CSB 49 Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died. NIV 49 Your forefathers ate the manna in the desert, yet they died. CSB 50 This is the bread that comes down from heaven so that anyone may eat of it and not die. NIV 50 But here is the bread that comes down from heaven, which a man may eat and not die. CSB 51 I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread he will live forever. The bread that I will give for the life of the world is My flesh." NIV 51 I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world." CSB 52 At that, the Jews argued among themselves, "How can this man give us His flesh to eat?" NIV 52 Then the Jews began to argue sharply among themselves, "How can this man give us his flesh to eat?" CSB 53 So Jesus said to them, "I assure you: Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you do not have life in yourselves. NIV 53 Jesus said to them, "I tell you the truth, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. CSB 54 Anyone who eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day, NIV 54 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. CSB 55 because My flesh is real food and My blood is real drink. NIV 55 For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink. CSB 56 The one who eats My flesh and drinks My blood lives in Me, and I in him. NIV 56 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in him. CSB 57 Just as the living Father sent Me and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on Me will live because of Me. NIV 57 Just as the living Father sent me and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me. CSB 58 This is the bread that came down from heaven; it is not like the manna your fathers ate-and they died. The one who eats this bread will live forever." NIV 58 This is the bread that came down from heaven. Your forefathers ate manna and died, but he who feeds on this bread will live forever." CSB 59 He said these things while teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum. NIV 59 He said this while teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum. CSB 60 Therefore, when many of His disciples heard this, they said, "This teaching is hard! Who can accept it?" NIV 60 On hearing it, many of his disciples said, "This is a hard teaching. Who can accept it?" CSB 61 Jesus, knowing in Himself that His disciples were complaining about this, asked them, "Does this offend you? NIV 61 Aware that his disciples were grumbling about this, Jesus said to them, "Does this offend you? CSB 62 Then what if you were to observe the Son of Man ascending to where He was before? NIV 62 What if you see the Son of Man ascend to where he was before! CSB 63 The Spirit is the One who gives life. The flesh doesn't help at all. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and are life. NIV 63 The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you are spirit and they are life. CSB 64 But there are some among you who don't believe." (For Jesus knew from the beginning those who would not believe and the one who would betray Him.) NIV 64 Yet there are some of you who do not believe." For Jesus had known from the beginning which of them did not believe and who would betray him. CSB 65 He said, "This is why I told you that no one can come to Me unless it is granted to him by the Father." NIV 65 He went on to say, "This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless the Father has enabled him." CSB 66 From that moment many of His disciples turned back and no longer accompanied Him. NIV 66 From this time many of his disciples turned back and no longer followed him. CSB 67 Therefore Jesus said to the Twelve, "You don't want to go away too, do you?" NIV 67 "You do not want to leave too, do you?" Jesus asked the Twelve. CSB 68 Simon Peter answered, "Lord, who will we go to? You have the words of eternal life. NIV 68 Simon Peter answered him, "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. CSB 69 We have come to believe and know that You are the Holy One of God!" NIV 69 We believe and know that you are the Holy One of God." CSB 70 Jesus replied to them, "Didn't I choose you, the Twelve? Yet one of you is the Devil!" NIV 70 Then Jesus replied, "Have I not chosen you, the Twelve? Yet one of you is a devil!" CSB 71 He was referring to Judas, Simon Iscariot's son, one of the Twelve, because he was going to betray Him. NIV 71 (He meant Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, who, though one of the Twelve, was later to betray him.)
