John 8

BBE 1 But Jesus went to the Mountain of Olives. NIV 1 But Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. BBE 2 And early in the morning he came again into the Temple and all the people came to him and he was seated teaching them. NIV 2 At dawn he appeared again in the temple courts, where all the people gathered around him, and he sat down to teach them. BBE 3 Now the scribes and Pharisees came, with a woman who had been taken in the act of sinning against the married relation; NIV 3 The teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought in a woman caught in adultery. They made her stand before the group BBE 4 And putting her forward, they said to him, Master, this woman has been taken in the very act of sinning against the married relation. NIV 4 and said to Jesus, "Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery. BBE 5 Now in the law Moses gave directions that such women were to be stoned; what do you say about it? NIV 5 In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say?" BBE 6 They said this, testing him, so that they might have something against him. But Jesus, with his head bent down, made letters on the floor with his finger. NIV 6 They were using this question as a trap, in order to have a basis for accusing him. But Jesus bent down and started to write on the ground with his finger. BBE 7 But when they went on with their questions, he got up and said to them, Let him among you who is without sin be the first to send a stone at her. NIV 7 When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, "If any one of you is without sin, let him be the first to throw a stone at her." BBE 8 And again, with bent head, he made letters on the floor. NIV 8 Again he stooped down and wrote on the ground. BBE 9 And when his words came to their ears, they went out one by one, starting with the oldest even to the last, because they were conscious of what was in their hearts: and Jesus was there by himself with the woman before him. NIV 9 At this, those who heard began to go away one at a time, the older ones first, until only Jesus was left, with the woman still standing there. BBE 10 Then Jesus got up, and seeing nobody but the woman, he said to her, Where are the men who said things against you? did no one give a decision against you? NIV 10 Jesus straightened up and asked her, "Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?" BBE 11 And she said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said, And I do not give a decision against you: go, and never do wrong again.] NIV 11 "No one, sir," she said. "Then neither do I condemn you," Jesus declared. "Go now and leave your life of sin." BBE 12 Then again Jesus said to them, I am the light of the world; he who comes with me will not be walking in the dark but will have the light of life. NIV 12 When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." BBE 13 So the Pharisees said to him, The witness you give is about yourself: your witness is not true. NIV 13 The Pharisees challenged him, "Here you are, appearing as your own witness; your testimony is not valid." BBE 14 Jesus said in answer, Even if I give witness about myself, my witness is true, because I have knowledge of where I came from and where I am going; but you have no knowledge of where I come from or of where I am going. NIV 14 Jesus answered, "Even if I testify on my own behalf, my testimony is valid, for I know where I came from and where I am going. But you have no idea where I come from or where I am going. BBE 15 You are judging from what you see; I am judging no man. NIV 15 You judge by human standards; I pass judgment on no one. BBE 16 Even if I am judging, my decision is right, because I am not by myself--with me is the Father who sent me. NIV 16 But if I do judge, my decisions are right, because I am not alone. I stand with the Father, who sent me. BBE 17 Even in your law it is said that the witness of two men is true. NIV 17 In your own Law it is written that the testimony of two men is valid. BBE 18 I give witness about myself and the Father who sent me gives witness about me. NIV 18 I am one who testifies for myself; my other witness is the Father, who sent me." BBE 19 Then they said to him, Where is your Father? Jesus said in answer, You have no knowledge of me or of my Father: if you had knowledge of me you would have knowledge of my Father. NIV 19 Then they asked him, "Where is your father?" "You do not know me or my Father," Jesus replied. "If you knew me, you would know my Father also." BBE 20 Jesus said these words in the place where the offerings were stored, while he was teaching in the Temple: but no man took him because his time was still to come. NIV 20 He spoke these words while teaching in the temple area near the place where the offerings were put. Yet no one seized him, because his time had not yet come. BBE 21 Then he said to them again, I am going away and you will be looking for me, but death will overtake you in your sins. It is not possible for you to come where I am going. NIV 21 Once more Jesus said to them, "I am going away, and you will look for me, and you will die in your sin. Where I go, you cannot come." BBE 22 So the Jews said, Will he take his life? Is that why he says, Where I go it is not possible for you to come? NIV 22 This made the Jews ask, "Will he kill himself ? Is that why he says, 'Where I go, you cannot come'?" BBE 23 And he said to them, You are of the earth; I am from heaven: you are of this world; I am not of this world. NIV 23 But he continued, "You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world. BBE 24 For this reason I said to you that death will overtake you in your sins: for if you have not faith that I am he, death will come to you while you are in your sins. NIV 24 I told you that you would die in your sins; if you do not believe that I am [the one I claim to be], you will indeed die in your sins." BBE 25 Then they said to him, Who are you? Jesus said, What I said to you from the first. NIV 25 "Who are you?" they asked. "Just what I have been claiming all along," Jesus replied. BBE 26 I have much to say about you and against you: but he who sent me is true and what he has said to me I say to the world. NIV 26 "I have much to say in judgment of you. But he who sent me is reliable, and what I have heard from him I tell the world." BBE 27 They did not see that his words were about the Father. NIV 27 They did not understand that he was telling them about his Father. BBE 28 So Jesus said, When the Son of man has been lifted up by you, then it will be clear to you who I am, and that I do nothing of myself, but say as the Father gave me teaching. NIV 28 So Jesus said, "When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am [the one I claim to be] and that I do nothing on my own but speak just what the Father has taught me. BBE 29 He who sent me is with me; he has not gone from me, because at all times I do the things which are pleasing to him. NIV 29 The one who sent me is with me; he has not left me alone, for I always do what pleases him." BBE 30 When he said this a number came to have faith in him. NIV 30 Even as he spoke, many put their faith in him. BBE 31 Then Jesus said to the Jews who had faith in him, If you keep my word, then you are truly my disciples; NIV 31 To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, "If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. BBE 32 And you will have knowledge of what is true, and that will make you free. NIV 32 Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." BBE 33 They said to him in answer, We are Abraham's seed and have never been any man's servant: why do you say, You will become free? NIV 33 They answered him, "We are Abraham's descendants and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?" BBE 34 And this was the answer Jesus gave them: Truly I say to you, Everyone who does evil is the servant of sin. NIV 34 Jesus replied, "I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. BBE 35 Now the servant does not go on living in the house for ever, but the son does. NIV 35 Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever. BBE 36 If then the son makes you free, you will be truly free. NIV 36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. BBE 37 I am conscious that you are Abraham's seed; but you have a desire to put me to death because my word has no place in you. NIV 37 I know you are Abraham's descendants. Yet you are ready to kill me, because you have no room for my word. BBE 38 I say the things which I have seen in my Father's house: and you do the things which come to you from your father's house. NIV 38 I am telling you what I have seen in the Father's presence, and you do what you have heard from your father. " BBE 39 In answer they said to him, Our father is Abraham. Jesus said to them, If you were Abraham's children you would do what Abraham did. NIV 39 "Abraham is our father," they answered. "If you were Abraham's children," said Jesus, "then you would do the things Abraham did. BBE 40 But now you have a desire to put me to death, a man who has said to you what is true, as I had it from God: Abraham did not do that. NIV 40 As it is, you are determined to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. Abraham did not do such things. BBE 41 You are doing the works of your father. They said to him, We are true sons of Abraham; we have one Father, who is God. NIV 41 You are doing the things your own father does." "We are not illegitimate children," they protested. "The only Father we have is God himself." BBE 42 Jesus said to them, If God was your Father you would have love for me, because it was from God I came and am here. I did not come of myself, but he sent me. NIV 42 Jesus said to them, "If God were your Father, you would love me, for I came from God and now am here. I have not come on my own; but he sent me. BBE 43 Why are my words not clear to you? It is because your ears are shut to my teaching. NIV 43 Why is my language not clear to you? Because you are unable to hear what I say. BBE 44 You are the children of your father the Evil One and it is your pleasure to do his desires. From the first he was a taker of life; and he did not go in the true way because there is no true thing in him. When he says what is false, it is natural to him, for he is false and the father of what is false. NIV 44 You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father's desire. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies. BBE 45 But because I say what is true, you have no belief in me. NIV 45 Yet because I tell the truth, you do not believe me! BBE 46 Which of you is able truly to say that I am a sinner? If I say what is true, why have you no belief in me? NIV 46 Can any of you prove me guilty of sin? If I am telling the truth, why don't you believe me? BBE 47 He who is a child of God gives ear to the words of God: your ears are not open to them because you are not from God. NIV 47 He who belongs to God hears what God says. The reason you do not hear is that you do not belong to God." BBE 48 The Jews said to him in answer, Are we not right in saying that you are of Samaria and have an evil spirit? NIV 48 The Jews answered him, "Aren't we right in saying that you are a Samaritan and demon-possessed?" BBE 49 And this was the answer of Jesus: I have not an evil spirit; but I give honour to my Father and you do not give honour to me. NIV 49 "I am not possessed by a demon," said Jesus, "but I honor my Father and you dishonor me. BBE 50 I, however, am not in search of glory for myself: there is One who is searching for it and he is judge. NIV 50 I am not seeking glory for myself; but there is one who seeks it, and he is the judge. BBE 51 Truly I say to you, If a man keeps my word he will never see death. NIV 51 I tell you the truth, if anyone keeps my word, he will never see death." BBE 52 The Jews said to him, Now we are certain that you have an evil spirit. Abraham is dead, and the prophets are dead; and you say, If a man keeps my word he will never see death. NIV 52 At this the Jews exclaimed, "Now we know that you are demon-possessed! Abraham died and so did the prophets, yet you say that if anyone keeps your word, he will never taste death. BBE 53 Are you greater than our father Abraham, who is dead? and the prophets are dead: who do you say that you are? NIV 53 Are you greater than our father Abraham? He died, and so did the prophets. Who do you think you are?" BBE 54 Jesus said in answer, If I take glory for myself, my glory is nothing: it is my Father who gives me glory, of whom you say that he is your God. NIV 54 Jesus replied, "If I glorify myself, my glory means nothing. My Father, whom you claim as your God, is the one who glorifies me. BBE 55 You have no knowledge of him, but I have knowledge of him; and if I said I have no knowledge of him I would be talking falsely like you: but I have full knowledge of him, and I keep his word. NIV 55 Though you do not know him, I know him. If I said I did not, I would be a liar like you, but I do know him and keep his word. BBE 56 Your father Abraham was full of joy at the hope of seeing my day: he saw it and was glad. NIV 56 Your father Abraham rejoiced at the thought of seeing my day; he saw it and was glad." BBE 57 Then the Jews said to him, You are not fifty years old; have you seen Abraham? NIV 57 "You are not yet fifty years old," the Jews said to him, "and you have seen Abraham!" BBE 58 Jesus said to them, Truly I say to you, Before Abraham came into being, I am. NIV 58 "I tell you the truth," Jesus answered, "before Abraham was born, I am!" BBE 59 So they took up stones to send at him: but Jesus got secretly out of their way and went out of the Temple. NIV 59 At this, they picked up stones to stone him, but Jesus hid himself, slipping away from the temple grounds.
