CSB 1 But Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. NIV 1 But Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. CSB 2 At dawn He went to the temple complex again, and all the people were coming to Him. He sat down and began to teach them. NIV 2 At dawn he appeared again in the temple courts, where all the people gathered around him, and he sat down to teach them. CSB 3 Then the scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman caught in adultery, making her stand in the center. NIV 3 The teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought in a woman caught in adultery. They made her stand before the group CSB 4 "Teacher," they said to Him, "this woman was caught in the act of committing adultery. NIV 4 and said to Jesus, "Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery. CSB 5 In the law Moses commanded us to stone such women. So what do You say?" NIV 5 In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say?" CSB 6 They asked this to trap Him, in order that they might have evidence to accuse Him. Jesus stooped down and started writing on the ground with His finger. NIV 6 They were using this question as a trap, in order to have a basis for accusing him. But Jesus bent down and started to write on the ground with his finger. CSB 7 When they persisted in questioning Him, He stood up and said to them, "The one without sin among you should be the first to throw a stone at her." NIV 7 When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, "If any one of you is without sin, let him be the first to throw a stone at her." CSB 8 Then He stooped down again and continued writing on the ground. NIV 8 Again he stooped down and wrote on the ground. CSB 9 When they heard this, they left one by one, starting with the older men. Only He was left, with the woman in the center. NIV 9 At this, those who heard began to go away one at a time, the older ones first, until only Jesus was left, with the woman still standing there. CSB 10 When Jesus stood up, He said to her, "Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?" NIV 10 Jesus straightened up and asked her, "Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?" CSB 11 "No one, Lord," she answered. "Neither do I condemn you," said Jesus. "Go, and from now on do not sin any more." ] NIV 11 "No one, sir," she said. "Then neither do I condemn you," Jesus declared. "Go now and leave your life of sin." CSB 12 Then Jesus spoke to them again: "I am the light of the world. Anyone who follows Me will never walk in the darkness but will have the light of life." NIV 12 When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." CSB 13 So the Pharisees said to Him, "You are testifying about Yourself. Your testimony is not valid." NIV 13 The Pharisees challenged him, "Here you are, appearing as your own witness; your testimony is not valid." CSB 14 "Even if I testify about Myself," Jesus replied, "My testimony is valid, because I know where I came from and where I'm going. But you don't know where I come from or where I'm going. NIV 14 Jesus answered, "Even if I testify on my own behalf, my testimony is valid, for I know where I came from and where I am going. But you have no idea where I come from or where I am going. CSB 15 You judge by human standards. I judge no one. NIV 15 You judge by human standards; I pass judgment on no one. CSB 16 And if I do judge, My judgment is true, because I am not alone, but I and the Father who sent Me [judge together]. NIV 16 But if I do judge, my decisions are right, because I am not alone. I stand with the Father, who sent me. CSB 17 Even in your law it is written that the witness of two men is valid. NIV 17 In your own Law it is written that the testimony of two men is valid. CSB 18 I am the One who testifies about Myself, and the Father who sent Me testifies about Me." NIV 18 I am one who testifies for myself; my other witness is the Father, who sent me." CSB 19 Then they asked Him, "Where is Your Father?" "You know neither Me nor My Father," Jesus answered. "If you knew Me, you would also know My Father." NIV 19 Then they asked him, "Where is your father?" "You do not know me or my Father," Jesus replied. "If you knew me, you would know my Father also." CSB 20 He spoke these words by the treasury, while teaching in the temple complex. But no one seized Him, because His hour had not come. NIV 20 He spoke these words while teaching in the temple area near the place where the offerings were put. Yet no one seized him, because his time had not yet come. CSB 21 Then He said to them again, "I'm going away; you will look for Me, and you will die in your sin. Where I'm going, you cannot come." NIV 21 Once more Jesus said to them, "I am going away, and you will look for me, and you will die in your sin. Where I go, you cannot come." CSB 22 So the Jews said again, "He won't kill Himself, will He, since He says, 'Where I'm going, you cannot come' ?" NIV 22 This made the Jews ask, "Will he kill himself ? Is that why he says, 'Where I go, you cannot come'?" CSB 23 "You are from below," He told them, "I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world. NIV 23 But he continued, "You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world. CSB 24 Therefore I told you that you will die in your sins. For if you do not believe that I am [He], you will die in your sins." NIV 24 I told you that you would die in your sins; if you do not believe that I am [the one I claim to be], you will indeed die in your sins." CSB 25 "Who are You?" they questioned. "Precisely what I've been telling you from the very beginning," Jesus told them. NIV 25 "Who are you?" they asked. "Just what I have been claiming all along," Jesus replied. CSB 26 "I have many things to say and to judge about you, but the One who sent Me is true, and what I have heard from Him-these things I tell the world." NIV 26 "I have much to say in judgment of you. But he who sent me is reliable, and what I have heard from him I tell the world." CSB 27 They did not know He was speaking to them about the Father. NIV 27 They did not understand that he was telling them about his Father. CSB 28 So Jesus said to them, "When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am [He], and that I do nothing on My own. But just as the Father taught Me, I say these things. NIV 28 So Jesus said, "When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am [the one I claim to be] and that I do nothing on my own but speak just what the Father has taught me. CSB 29 The One who sent Me is with Me. He has not left Me alone, because I always do what pleases Him." NIV 29 The one who sent me is with me; he has not left me alone, for I always do what pleases him." CSB 30 As He was saying these things, many believed in Him. NIV 30 Even as he spoke, many put their faith in him. CSB 31 So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed Him, "If you continue in My word, you really are My disciples. NIV 31 To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, "If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. CSB 32 You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." NIV 32 Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." CSB 33 "We are descendants of Abraham," they answered Him, "and we have never been enslaved to anyone. How can You say, 'You will become free'?" NIV 33 They answered him, "We are Abraham's descendants and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?" CSB 34 Jesus responded, "I assure you: Everyone who commits sin is a slave of sin. NIV 34 Jesus replied, "I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. CSB 35 A slave does not remain in the household forever, but a son does remain forever. NIV 35 Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever. CSB 36 Therefore if the Son sets you free, you really will be free. NIV 36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. CSB 37 I know you are descendants of Abraham, but you are trying to kill Me because My word is not welcome among you. NIV 37 I know you are Abraham's descendants. Yet you are ready to kill me, because you have no room for my word. CSB 38 I speak what I have seen in the presence of the Father, and therefore you do what you have heard from your father." NIV 38 I am telling you what I have seen in the Father's presence, and you do what you have heard from your father. " CSB 39 "Our father is Abraham!" they replied. "If you were Abraham's children," Jesus told them, "you would do what Abraham did. NIV 39 "Abraham is our father," they answered. "If you were Abraham's children," said Jesus, "then you would do the things Abraham did. CSB 40 But now you are trying to kill Me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. Abraham did not do this! NIV 40 As it is, you are determined to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. Abraham did not do such things. CSB 41 You're doing what your father does." "We weren't born of sexual immorality," they said. "We have one Father-God." NIV 41 You are doing the things your own father does." "We are not illegitimate children," they protested. "The only Father we have is God himself." CSB 42 Jesus said to them, "If God were your Father, you would love Me, because I came from God and I am here. For I didn't come on My own, but He sent Me. NIV 42 Jesus said to them, "If God were your Father, you would love me, for I came from God and now am here. I have not come on my own; but he sent me. CSB 43 Why don't you understand what I say? Because you cannot listen to My word. NIV 43 Why is my language not clear to you? Because you are unable to hear what I say. CSB 44 You are of your father the Devil, and you want to carry out your father's desires. He was a murderer from the beginning and has not stood in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he tells a lie, he speaks from his own nature, because he is a liar and the father of liars. NIV 44 You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father's desire. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies. CSB 45 Yet because I tell the truth, you do not believe Me. NIV 45 Yet because I tell the truth, you do not believe me! CSB 46 Who among you can convict Me of sin? If I tell the truth, why don't you believe Me? NIV 46 Can any of you prove me guilty of sin? If I am telling the truth, why don't you believe me? CSB 47 The one who is from God listens to God's words. This is why you don't listen, because you are not from God." NIV 47 He who belongs to God hears what God says. The reason you do not hear is that you do not belong to God." CSB 48 The Jews responded to Him, "Aren't we right in saying that You're a Samaritan and have a demon?" NIV 48 The Jews answered him, "Aren't we right in saying that you are a Samaritan and demon-possessed?" CSB 49 "I do not have a demon," Jesus answered. "On the contrary, I honor My Father and you dishonor Me. NIV 49 "I am not possessed by a demon," said Jesus, "but I honor my Father and you dishonor me. CSB 50 I do not seek My glory; the One who seeks it also judges. NIV 50 I am not seeking glory for myself; but there is one who seeks it, and he is the judge. CSB 51 I assure you: If anyone keeps My word, he will never see death-ever!" NIV 51 I tell you the truth, if anyone keeps my word, he will never see death." CSB 52 Then the Jews said, "Now we know You have a demon. Abraham died and so did the prophets. You say, 'If anyone keeps My word, he will never taste death-ever!' NIV 52 At this the Jews exclaimed, "Now we know that you are demon-possessed! Abraham died and so did the prophets, yet you say that if anyone keeps your word, he will never taste death. CSB 53 Are You greater than our father Abraham who died? Even the prophets died. Who do You pretend to be?" NIV 53 Are you greater than our father Abraham? He died, and so did the prophets. Who do you think you are?" CSB 54 "If I glorify Myself," Jesus answered, "My glory is nothing. My Father-you say about Him, 'He is our God'-He is the One who glorifies Me. NIV 54 Jesus replied, "If I glorify myself, my glory means nothing. My Father, whom you claim as your God, is the one who glorifies me. CSB 55 You've never known Him, but I know Him. If I were to say I don't know Him, I would be a liar like you. But I do know Him, and I keep His word. NIV 55 Though you do not know him, I know him. If I said I did not, I would be a liar like you, but I do know him and keep his word. CSB 56 Your father Abraham was overjoyed that he would see My day; he saw it and rejoiced." NIV 56 Your father Abraham rejoiced at the thought of seeing my day; he saw it and was glad." CSB 57 The Jews replied, "You aren't 50 years old yet, and You've seen Abraham?" NIV 57 "You are not yet fifty years old," the Jews said to him, "and you have seen Abraham!" CSB 58 Jesus said to them, "I assure you: Before Abraham was, I am." NIV 58 "I tell you the truth," Jesus answered, "before Abraham was born, I am!" CSB 59 At that, they picked up stones to throw at Him. But Jesus was hidden and went out of the temple complex. NIV 59 At this, they picked up stones to stone him, but Jesus hid himself, slipping away from the temple grounds.
