LEB 1 But Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. NIV 1 But Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. LEB 2 Now early in the morning he came again to the temple [courts]. And all the people were coming, and he sat down [and] began to teach them. NIV 2 At dawn he appeared again in the temple courts, where all the people gathered around him, and he sat down to teach them. LEB 3 Now the scribes and the Pharisees brought to him a woman caught in adultery. And standing her in [their] midst, NIV 3 The teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought in a woman caught in adultery. They made her stand before the group LEB 4 they said to him, testing [him], "Teacher, this woman was caught in the very act of committing adultery! NIV 4 and said to Jesus, "Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery. LEB 5 Now in the law, Moses commanded us to stone such women. So what do you say?" NIV 5 In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say?" LEB 6 (Now they were saying this to test him, so that they would have [an occasion] to bring charges against him.) But Jesus, bending down, began to write with [his] finger on the ground, taking no notice. NIV 6 They were using this question as a trap, in order to have a basis for accusing him. But Jesus bent down and started to write on the ground with his finger. LEB 7 And when they persisted in asking him, straightening up he said to them, "The [one] of you without sin, let him throw the first stone at her!" NIV 7 When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, "If any one of you is without sin, let him be the first to throw a stone at her." LEB 8 And bending down again, he wrote on the ground. NIV 8 Again he stooped down and wrote on the ground. LEB 9 Now [when they] heard [it], being convicted by their conscience, they began to depart, one by one, beginning with the older ones, and Jesus was left alone--and the woman who was in [their] midst. NIV 9 At this, those who heard began to go away one at a time, the older ones first, until only Jesus was left, with the woman still standing there. LEB 10 So Jesus, straightening up and seeing no one except the woman, said to her, "Where are those accusers of yours? Does no one condemn you?" NIV 10 Jesus straightened up and asked her, "Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?" LEB 11 And she said, "No one, Lord." So Jesus said, "Neither do I condemn you. Go, and sin no more."]] NIV 11 "No one, sir," she said. "Then neither do I condemn you," Jesus declared. "Go now and leave your life of sin." LEB 12 Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, "I am the light of the world! The one who follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." NIV 12 When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." LEB 13 So the Pharisees said to him, "You testify concerning yourself! Your testimony is not true." NIV 13 The Pharisees challenged him, "Here you are, appearing as your own witness; your testimony is not valid." LEB 14 Jesus answered and said to them, "Even if I testify concerning myself, my testimony is true, because I know where I have come from and where I am going. But you do not know where I have come from or where I am going. NIV 14 Jesus answered, "Even if I testify on my own behalf, my testimony is valid, for I know where I came from and where I am going. But you have no idea where I come from or where I am going. LEB 15 You judge according to externals; I do not judge anyone. NIV 15 You judge by human standards; I pass judgment on no one. LEB 16 But even if I judge, my judgment is true, because I am not alone, but I and the Father who sent me. NIV 16 But if I do judge, my decisions are right, because I am not alone. I stand with the Father, who sent me. LEB 17 And even in your law it is written that the testimony of two men is true. NIV 17 In your own Law it is written that the testimony of two men is valid. LEB 18 I am the one who testifies concerning myself, and the Father who sent me testifies concerning me." NIV 18 I am one who testifies for myself; my other witness is the Father, who sent me." LEB 19 So they were saying to him, "Where is your father?" Jesus replied, "You know neither me nor my Father! If you had known me, you would have known my Father also." NIV 19 Then they asked him, "Where is your father?" "You do not know me or my Father," Jesus replied. "If you knew me, you would know my Father also." LEB 20 He spoke these words by the treasury [while] teaching in the temple [courts], and no one seized him, because his hour had not yet come. NIV 20 He spoke these words while teaching in the temple area near the place where the offerings were put. Yet no one seized him, because his time had not yet come. LEB 21 So he said to them again, "I am going away, and you will seek me and will die in your sin. Where I am going you cannot come!" NIV 21 Once more Jesus said to them, "I am going away, and you will look for me, and you will die in your sin. Where I go, you cannot come." LEB 22 Then the Jews began to say, "Perhaps he will kill himself, because he is saying, 'Where I am going you cannot come.'" NIV 22 This made the Jews ask, "Will he kill himself ? Is that why he says, 'Where I go, you cannot come'?" LEB 23 And he said to them, "You are from below; I am from above. You are from this world; I am not from this world. NIV 23 But he continued, "You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world. LEB 24 Thus I said to you that you will die in your sins. For if you do not believe that I am [he], you will die in your sins." NIV 24 I told you that you would die in your sins; if you do not believe that I am [the one I claim to be], you will indeed die in your sins." LEB 25 So they began to say to him, "Who are you?" Jesus said to them, "{What} I have been saying to you [from] the beginning. NIV 25 "Who are you?" they asked. "Just what I have been claiming all along," Jesus replied. LEB 26 I have many [things] to say and to judge concerning you, but the one who sent me is true, and [the things] which I heard from him, these [things] I say to the world." NIV 26 "I have much to say in judgment of you. But he who sent me is reliable, and what I have heard from him I tell the world." LEB 27 (They did not know that he was speaking to them about the Father.) NIV 27 They did not understand that he was telling them about his Father. LEB 28 Then Jesus said, "When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will recognize that I am [he], and I do nothing from myself, but just as the Father taught me, I say these [things]. NIV 28 So Jesus said, "When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am [the one I claim to be] and that I do nothing on my own but speak just what the Father has taught me. LEB 29 And the one who sent me is with me. He has not left me alone, because I always do the things that are pleasing to him." NIV 29 The one who sent me is with me; he has not left me alone, for I always do what pleases him." LEB 30 [While] he was saying these [things], many believed in him. NIV 30 Even as he spoke, many put their faith in him. LEB 31 Then Jesus said to those Jews who had believed him, "If you continue in my word you are truly my disciples, NIV 31 To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, "If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. LEB 32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." NIV 32 Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." LEB 33 They replied to him, "We are descendants of Abraham and have not been enslaved to anyone at any time. How do you say, 'You will become free'?" NIV 33 They answered him, "We are Abraham's descendants and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?" LEB 34 Jesus replied to them, "Truly, truly I say to you, that everyone who commits sin is a slave of sin. NIV 34 Jesus replied, "I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. LEB 35 And the slave does not remain in the household {forever}; the son remains {forever}. NIV 35 Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever. LEB 36 So if the son sets you free, you will be truly free. NIV 36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. LEB 37 I know that you are descendants of Abraham. But you are seeking to kill me, because my word makes no progress among you. NIV 37 I know you are Abraham's descendants. Yet you are ready to kill me, because you have no room for my word. LEB 38 I speak [the things] that I have seen with the Father; so also you do [the things] that you have heard from the Father." NIV 38 I am telling you what I have seen in the Father's presence, and you do what you have heard from your father. " LEB 39 They answered and said to him, "Abraham is our father!" Jesus said to them, "If you are children of Abraham, do the deeds of Abraham! NIV 39 "Abraham is our father," they answered. "If you were Abraham's children," said Jesus, "then you would do the things Abraham did. LEB 40 But now you are seeking to kill me, a man who spoke to you the truth which I heard from God. This Abraham did not do. NIV 40 As it is, you are determined to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. Abraham did not do such things. LEB 41 You are doing the deeds of your father!" They said<note: Some manuscripts have "Then they said"> to him, "We were not born from sexual immorality! We have one father, God!" NIV 41 You are doing the things your own father does." "We are not illegitimate children," they protested. "The only Father we have is God himself." LEB 42 Jesus said to them, "If God were your father, you would love me, for I have come forth from God and have come. For I have not come from myself, but that one sent me. NIV 42 Jesus said to them, "If God were your Father, you would love me, for I came from God and now am here. I have not come on my own; but he sent me. LEB 43 {Why} do you not understand my way of speaking? Because you are not able to listen to my message. NIV 43 Why is my language not clear to you? Because you are unable to hear what I say. LEB 44 You are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father! That one was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand firm in the truth, because truth is not in him. Whenever he speaks the lie, he speaks from his own [nature], because he is a liar and the father {of lies}. NIV 44 You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father's desire. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies. LEB 45 But because I am telling the truth, you do not believe me. NIV 45 Yet because I tell the truth, you do not believe me! LEB 46 Who among you convicts me concerning sin? If I am telling the truth, {why} do you not believe me? NIV 46 Can any of you prove me guilty of sin? If I am telling the truth, why don't you believe me? LEB 47 The one who is from God listens to the words of God. Because of this you do not listen--because you are not of God." NIV 47 He who belongs to God hears what God says. The reason you do not hear is that you do not belong to God." LEB 48 The Jews answered and said to him, "Do we not correctly say that you are a Samaritan and have a demon?" NIV 48 The Jews answered him, "Aren't we right in saying that you are a Samaritan and demon-possessed?" LEB 49 Jesus replied, "I do not have a demon, but I honor my Father, and you dishonor me! NIV 49 "I am not possessed by a demon," said Jesus, "but I honor my Father and you dishonor me. LEB 50 But I do not seek my [own] glory. There is one who seeks and judges! NIV 50 I am not seeking glory for myself; but there is one who seeks it, and he is the judge. LEB 51 Truly, truly I say to you, if anyone keeps my word, he will never experience death {forever}." NIV 51 I tell you the truth, if anyone keeps my word, he will never see death." LEB 52 The Jews said to him, "Now we know that you have a demon! Abraham and the prophets died, and you say, 'If anyone keeps my word, he will never taste death {forever}.' NIV 52 At this the Jews exclaimed, "Now we know that you are demon-possessed! Abraham died and so did the prophets, yet you say that if anyone keeps your word, he will never taste death. LEB 53 You are not greater than our father Abraham who died, [are you]? And the prophets died! Who do you make yourself [to be]?" NIV 53 Are you greater than our father Abraham? He died, and so did the prophets. Who do you think you are?" LEB 54 Jesus replied, "If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing. The one who glorifies me is my Father, [about] whom you say, 'He is our God.' NIV 54 Jesus replied, "If I glorify myself, my glory means nothing. My Father, whom you claim as your God, is the one who glorifies me. LEB 55 And you have not known him, but I know him. And if I were to say that I do not know him, I would be a liar like you! But I know him and I keep his word. NIV 55 Though you do not know him, I know him. If I said I did not, I would be a liar like you, but I do know him and keep his word. LEB 56 Abraham your father rejoiced that he would see my day, and he saw [it] and was glad." NIV 56 Your father Abraham rejoiced at the thought of seeing my day; he saw it and was glad." LEB 57 So the Jews said to him, "{You are} not yet fifty years [old], and have you seen Abraham?" NIV 57 "You are not yet fifty years old," the Jews said to him, "and you have seen Abraham!" LEB 58 Jesus said to them, "Truly, truly I say to you, before Abraham was, I am!" NIV 58 "I tell you the truth," Jesus answered, "before Abraham was born, I am!" LEB 59 Then they picked up stones in order to throw [them] at him. But Jesus was hidden and went out of the temple [courts]. NIV 59 At this, they picked up stones to stone him, but Jesus hid himself, slipping away from the temple grounds.
