NIRV 1 But Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. NIV 1 But Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. NIRV 2 At sunrise he arrived in the temple courtyard again. All the people gathered around him there. He sat down to teach them. NIV 2 At dawn he appeared again in the temple courts, where all the people gathered around him, and he sat down to teach them. NIRV 3 The teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought in a woman. She had been caught in adultery. They made her stand in front of the group. NIV 3 The teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought in a woman caught in adultery. They made her stand before the group NIRV 4 They said to Jesus, "Teacher, this woman was caught having sex with a man who was not her husband. NIV 4 and said to Jesus, "Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery. NIRV 5 In the Law, Moses commanded us to kill such women by throwing stones at them. Now what do you say?" NIV 5 In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say?" NIRV 6 They were trying to trap Jesus with that question. They wanted to have a reason to bring charges against him. But Jesus bent down and started to write on the ground with his finger. NIV 6 They were using this question as a trap, in order to have a basis for accusing him. But Jesus bent down and started to write on the ground with his finger. NIRV 7 They kept asking him questions. So he stood up and said to them, "Has any one of you not sinned? Then you be the first to throw a stone at her." NIV 7 When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, "If any one of you is without sin, let him be the first to throw a stone at her." NIRV 8 He bent down again and wrote on the ground. NIV 8 Again he stooped down and wrote on the ground. NIRV 9 Those who heard what he had said began to go away. They left one at a time, the older ones first. Soon only Jesus was left. The woman was still standing there. NIV 9 At this, those who heard began to go away one at a time, the older ones first, until only Jesus was left, with the woman still standing there. NIRV 10 Jesus stood up and asked her, "Woman, where are they? Hasn't anyone found you guilty?" NIV 10 Jesus straightened up and asked her, "Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?" NIRV 11 "No one, sir," she said. "Then I don't find you guilty either," Jesus said. "Go now and leave your life of sin." NIV 11 "No one, sir," she said. "Then neither do I condemn you," Jesus declared. "Go now and leave your life of sin." NIRV 12 Jesus spoke to the people again. He said, "I am the light of the world. Those who follow me will never walk in darkness. They will have the light that leads to life." NIV 12 When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." NIRV 13 The Pharisees argued with him. "Here you are," they said, "appearing as your own witness. But your witness does not count." NIV 13 The Pharisees challenged him, "Here you are, appearing as your own witness; your testimony is not valid." NIRV 14 Jesus answered, "Even if I give witness about myself, my witness does count. I know where I came from. And I know where I am going. But you have no idea where I come from or where I am going. NIV 14 Jesus answered, "Even if I testify on my own behalf, my testimony is valid, for I know where I came from and where I am going. But you have no idea where I come from or where I am going. NIRV 15 You judge by human standards. I don't judge anyone. NIV 15 You judge by human standards; I pass judgment on no one. NIRV 16 "But if I do judge, what I decide is right. This is because I am not alone. I stand with the Father, who sent me. NIV 16 But if I do judge, my decisions are right, because I am not alone. I stand with the Father, who sent me. NIRV 17 Your own Law says that the witness of two is what counts. NIV 17 In your own Law it is written that the testimony of two men is valid. NIRV 18 I give witness about myself. My other witness is the Father, who sent me." NIV 18 I am one who testifies for myself; my other witness is the Father, who sent me." NIRV 19 Then they asked him, "Where is your father?" "You do not know me or my Father," Jesus replied. "If you knew me, you would know my Father also." NIV 19 Then they asked him, "Where is your father?" "You do not know me or my Father," Jesus replied. "If you knew me, you would know my Father also." NIRV 20 He spoke these words while he was teaching in the temple area. He was near the place where the offerings were put. But no one arrested him. His time had not yet come. NIV 20 He spoke these words while teaching in the temple area near the place where the offerings were put. Yet no one seized him, because his time had not yet come. NIRV 21 Once more Jesus spoke to them. "I am going away," he said. "You will look for me, and you will die in your sin. You can't come where I am going." NIV 21 Once more Jesus said to them, "I am going away, and you will look for me, and you will die in your sin. Where I go, you cannot come." NIRV 22 This made the Jews ask, "Will he kill himself? Is that why he says, 'You can't come where I am going'?" NIV 22 This made the Jews ask, "Will he kill himself ? Is that why he says, 'Where I go, you cannot come'?" NIRV 23 But Jesus said, "You are from below. I am from heaven. You are from this world. I am not from this world. NIV 23 But he continued, "You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world. NIRV 24 I told you that you would die in your sins. Do you believe that I am the one I claim to be? If you don't, you will certainly die in your sins." NIV 24 I told you that you would die in your sins; if you do not believe that I am [the one I claim to be], you will indeed die in your sins." NIRV 25 "Who are you?" they asked. "Just what I have been claiming all along," Jesus replied. NIV 25 "Who are you?" they asked. "Just what I have been claiming all along," Jesus replied. NIRV 26 "I have a lot to say that will judge you. But the One who sent me can be trusted. And I tell the world what I have heard from him." NIV 26 "I have much to say in judgment of you. But he who sent me is reliable, and what I have heard from him I tell the world." NIRV 27 They did not understand that Jesus was telling them about his Father. NIV 27 They did not understand that he was telling them about his Father. NIRV 28 So Jesus said, "You will lift up the Son of Man. Then you will know that I am the one I claim to be. You will also know that I do nothing on my own. I speak just what the Father has taught me. NIV 28 So Jesus said, "When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am [the one I claim to be] and that I do nothing on my own but speak just what the Father has taught me. NIRV 29 The One who sent me is with me. He has not left me alone, because I always do what pleases him." NIV 29 The one who sent me is with me; he has not left me alone, for I always do what pleases him." NIRV 30 Even while Jesus was speaking, many people put their faith in him. NIV 30 Even as he spoke, many put their faith in him. NIRV 31 Jesus spoke to the Jews who had believed him. "If you obey my teaching," he said, "you are really my disciples. NIV 31 To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, "If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. NIRV 32 Then you will know the truth. And the truth will set you free." NIV 32 Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." NIRV 33 They answered him, "We are Abraham's children. We have never been slaves of anyone. So how can you say that we will be set free?" NIV 33 They answered him, "We are Abraham's descendants and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?" NIRV 34 Jesus replied, "What I'm about to tell you is true. Everyone who sins is a slave of sin. NIV 34 Jesus replied, "I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. NIRV 35 A slave has no lasting place in the family. But a son belongs to the family forever. NIV 35 Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever. NIRV 36 So if the Son of Man sets you free, you will really be free. NIV 36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. NIRV 37 "I know you are Abraham's children. But you are ready to kill me. You have no room for my word. NIV 37 I know you are Abraham's descendants. Yet you are ready to kill me, because you have no room for my word. NIRV 38 I am telling you what I saw when I was with my Father. You do what you have heard from your father. " NIV 38 I am telling you what I have seen in the Father's presence, and you do what you have heard from your father. " NIRV 39 "Abraham is our father," they answered. Jesus said, "Are you really Abraham's children? If you are, you will do the things Abraham did. NIV 39 "Abraham is our father," they answered. "If you were Abraham's children," said Jesus, "then you would do the things Abraham did. NIRV 40 But you have decided to kill me. I am a man who has told you the truth I heard from God. Abraham didn't do the things you want to do. NIV 40 As it is, you are determined to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. Abraham did not do such things. NIRV 41 You are doing the things your own father does." "We are not children of people who weren't married to each other," they objected. "The only Father we have is God himself." NIV 41 You are doing the things your own father does." "We are not illegitimate children," they protested. "The only Father we have is God himself." NIRV 42 Jesus said to them, "If God were your Father, you would love me. I came from God, and now I am here. I have not come on my own. He sent me. NIV 42 Jesus said to them, "If God were your Father, you would love me, for I came from God and now am here. I have not come on my own; but he sent me. NIRV 43 "Why aren't my words clear to you? Because you can't really hear what I say. NIV 43 Why is my language not clear to you? Because you are unable to hear what I say. NIRV 44 You belong to your father, the devil. You want to obey your father's wishes. "From the beginning, the devil was a murderer. He has never obeyed the truth. There is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his natural language. He does this because he is a liar. He is the father of lies. NIV 44 You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father's desire. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies. NIRV 45 "But because I tell the truth, you don't believe me! NIV 45 Yet because I tell the truth, you do not believe me! NIRV 46 Can any of you prove I am guilty of sinning? Am I not telling the truth? Then why don't you believe me? NIV 46 Can any of you prove me guilty of sin? If I am telling the truth, why don't you believe me? NIRV 47 "Everyone who belongs to God hears what God says. The reason you don't hear is that you don't belong to God." NIV 47 He who belongs to God hears what God says. The reason you do not hear is that you do not belong to God." NIRV 48 The Jews answered Jesus, "Aren't we right when we say you are a Samaritan? Aren't you controlled by a demon?" NIV 48 The Jews answered him, "Aren't we right in saying that you are a Samaritan and demon-possessed?" NIRV 49 "I am not controlled by a demon," said Jesus. "I honor my Father. You do not honor me. NIV 49 "I am not possessed by a demon," said Jesus, "but I honor my Father and you dishonor me. NIRV 50 I am not seeking glory for myself. But there is One who brings glory to me. He is the judge. NIV 50 I am not seeking glory for myself; but there is one who seeks it, and he is the judge. NIRV 51 What I'm about to tell you is true. Anyone who obeys my word will never die." NIV 51 I tell you the truth, if anyone keeps my word, he will never see death." NIRV 52 Then the Jews cried out, "Now we know you are controlled by a demon! Abraham died. So did the prophets. But you say that anyone who obeys your word will never die. NIV 52 At this the Jews exclaimed, "Now we know that you are demon-possessed! Abraham died and so did the prophets, yet you say that if anyone keeps your word, he will never taste death. NIRV 53 Are you greater than our father Abraham? He died. So did the prophets. Who do you think you are?" NIV 53 Are you greater than our father Abraham? He died, and so did the prophets. Who do you think you are?" NIRV 54 Jesus replied, "If I bring glory to myself, my glory means nothing. You claim that my Father is your God. He is the one who brings glory to me. NIV 54 Jesus replied, "If I glorify myself, my glory means nothing. My Father, whom you claim as your God, is the one who glorifies me. NIRV 55 You do not know him. But I know him. If I said I did not, I would be a liar like you. But I do know him. And I obey his word. NIV 55 Though you do not know him, I know him. If I said I did not, I would be a liar like you, but I do know him and keep his word. NIRV 56 "Your father Abraham was filled with joy at the thought of seeing my day. He saw it and was glad." NIV 56 Your father Abraham rejoiced at the thought of seeing my day; he saw it and was glad." NIRV 57 "You are not even 50 years old," the Jews said to Jesus. "And you have seen Abraham?" NIV 57 "You are not yet fifty years old," the Jews said to him, "and you have seen Abraham!" NIRV 58 "What I'm about to tell you is true," Jesus answered. "Before Abraham was born, I am!" NIV 58 "I tell you the truth," Jesus answered, "before Abraham was born, I am!" NIRV 59 When he said this, they picked up stones to kill him. But Jesus hid himself. He slipped away from the temple area. NIV 59 At this, they picked up stones to stone him, but Jesus hid himself, slipping away from the temple grounds.
