WEB 1 but Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. NIV 1 But Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. WEB 2 At dawn, he came again into the temple, and all the people came to him. He sat down, and taught them. NIV 2 At dawn he appeared again in the temple courts, where all the people gathered around him, and he sat down to teach them. WEB 3 The scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman taken in adultery. Having set her in the midst, NIV 3 The teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought in a woman caught in adultery. They made her stand before the group WEB 4 they told him, "Teacher, we found this woman in adultery, in the very act. NIV 4 and said to Jesus, "Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery. WEB 5 Now in our law, Moses commanded us to stone such. What then do you say about her?" NIV 5 In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say?" WEB 6 They said this testing him, that they might have something to accuse him of. But Jesus stooped down, and wrote on the ground with his finger, as if he didn't hear. NIV 6 They were using this question as a trap, in order to have a basis for accusing him. But Jesus bent down and started to write on the ground with his finger. WEB 7 But when they continued asking him, he lifted himself up, and said to them, "He who is without sin among you, let him throw the first stone at her." NIV 7 When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, "If any one of you is without sin, let him be the first to throw a stone at her." WEB 8 Again he stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground. NIV 8 Again he stooped down and wrote on the ground. WEB 9 They, when they heard it, being convicted by their conscience, went out one by one, beginning from the oldest, even to the last. Jesus was left alone with the woman where she was, in the middle. NIV 9 At this, those who heard began to go away one at a time, the older ones first, until only Jesus was left, with the woman still standing there. WEB 10 Jesus lifted himself up, and seeing no one but the woman, said to her, "Woman, where are they? Did no one condemn you?" NIV 10 Jesus straightened up and asked her, "Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?" WEB 11 She said, "No one, Lord." Jesus said, "Neither do I condemn you. Go your way. From now on, sin no more." NIV 11 "No one, sir," she said. "Then neither do I condemn you," Jesus declared. "Go now and leave your life of sin." WEB 12 Again, therefore, Jesus spoke to them, saying, "I am the light of the world. He who follows me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the light of life." NIV 12 When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." WEB 13 The Pharisees therefore said to him, "You testify about yourself. Your testimony is not valid." NIV 13 The Pharisees challenged him, "Here you are, appearing as your own witness; your testimony is not valid." WEB 14 Jesus answered them, "Even if I testify about myself, my testimony is true, for I know where I came from, and where I am going; but you don't know where I came from, or where I am going. NIV 14 Jesus answered, "Even if I testify on my own behalf, my testimony is valid, for I know where I came from and where I am going. But you have no idea where I come from or where I am going. WEB 15 You judge according to the flesh. I judge no one. NIV 15 You judge by human standards; I pass judgment on no one. WEB 16 Even if I do judge, my judgment is true, for I am not alone, but I am with the Father who sent me. NIV 16 But if I do judge, my decisions are right, because I am not alone. I stand with the Father, who sent me. WEB 17 It's also written in your law that the testimony of two men is valid. NIV 17 In your own Law it is written that the testimony of two men is valid. WEB 18 I am he who testifies about myself, and the Father who sent me testifies about me." NIV 18 I am one who testifies for myself; my other witness is the Father, who sent me." WEB 19 They said therefore to him, "Where is your Father?" Jesus answered, "You know neither me, nor my Father. If you knew me, you would know my Father also." NIV 19 Then they asked him, "Where is your father?" "You do not know me or my Father," Jesus replied. "If you knew me, you would know my Father also." WEB 20 Jesus spoke these words in the treasury, as he taught in the temple. No one arrested him, because his hour had not yet come. NIV 20 He spoke these words while teaching in the temple area near the place where the offerings were put. Yet no one seized him, because his time had not yet come. WEB 21 Jesus said therefore again to them, "I am going away, and you will seek me, and will die in your sins. Where I go, you can't come." NIV 21 Once more Jesus said to them, "I am going away, and you will look for me, and you will die in your sin. Where I go, you cannot come." WEB 22 The Jews therefore said, "Will he kill himself, that he says, 'Where I am going, you can't come?'" NIV 22 This made the Jews ask, "Will he kill himself ? Is that why he says, 'Where I go, you cannot come'?" WEB 23 He said to them, "You are from beneath. I am from above. You are of this world. I am not of this world. NIV 23 But he continued, "You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world. WEB 24 I said therefore to you that you will die in your sins; for unless you believe that I am he, you will die in your sins." NIV 24 I told you that you would die in your sins; if you do not believe that I am [the one I claim to be], you will indeed die in your sins." WEB 25 They said therefore to him, "Who are you?" Jesus said to them, "Just what I have been saying to you from the beginning. NIV 25 "Who are you?" they asked. "Just what I have been claiming all along," Jesus replied. WEB 26 I have many things to speak and to judge concerning you. However he who sent me is true; and the things which I heard from him, these I say to the world." NIV 26 "I have much to say in judgment of you. But he who sent me is reliable, and what I have heard from him I tell the world." WEB 27 They didn't perceive that he spoke to them about the Father. NIV 27 They did not understand that he was telling them about his Father. WEB 28 Jesus therefore said to them, "When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am he, and that I do nothing of myself, but as my Father taught me, I say these things. NIV 28 So Jesus said, "When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am [the one I claim to be] and that I do nothing on my own but speak just what the Father has taught me. WEB 29 He who sent me is with me. The Father hasn't left me alone, for I always do the things that are pleasing to him." NIV 29 The one who sent me is with me; he has not left me alone, for I always do what pleases him." WEB 30 As he spoke these things, many believed in him. NIV 30 Even as he spoke, many put their faith in him. WEB 31 Jesus therefore said to those Jews who had believed him, "If you remain in my word, then you are truly my disciples. NIV 31 To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, "If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. WEB 32 You will know the truth, and the truth will make you free." NIV 32 Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." WEB 33 They answered him, "We are Abraham's seed, and have never yet been in bondage to anyone. How do you say, 'You will be made free?'" NIV 33 They answered him, "We are Abraham's descendants and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?" WEB 34 Jesus answered them, "Most assuredly I tell you, everyone who commits sin is the bondservant of sin. NIV 34 Jesus replied, "I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. WEB 35 A bondservant doesn't live in the house forever. A son remains forever. NIV 35 Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever. WEB 36 If therefore the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed. NIV 36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. WEB 37 I know that you are Abraham's seed, yet you seek to kill me, because my word finds no place in you. NIV 37 I know you are Abraham's descendants. Yet you are ready to kill me, because you have no room for my word. WEB 38 I say the things which I have seen with my Father; and you also do the things which you have seen with your father." NIV 38 I am telling you what I have seen in the Father's presence, and you do what you have heard from your father. " WEB 39 They answered him, "Our father is Abraham." Jesus said to them, "If you were Abraham's children, you would do the works of Abraham. NIV 39 "Abraham is our father," they answered. "If you were Abraham's children," said Jesus, "then you would do the things Abraham did. WEB 40 But now you seek to kill me, a man who has told you the truth, which I heard from God. Abraham didn't do this. NIV 40 As it is, you are determined to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. Abraham did not do such things. WEB 41 You do the works of your father." They said to him, "We were not born of sexual immorality. We have one Father, God." NIV 41 You are doing the things your own father does." "We are not illegitimate children," they protested. "The only Father we have is God himself." WEB 42 Therefore Jesus said to them, "If God were your Father, you would love me, for I came forth and have come from God. For neither have I come of myself, but he sent me. NIV 42 Jesus said to them, "If God were your Father, you would love me, for I came from God and now am here. I have not come on my own; but he sent me. WEB 43 Why don't you understand my speech? Because you can't hear my word. NIV 43 Why is my language not clear to you? Because you are unable to hear what I say. WEB 44 You are of your Father, the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and doesn't stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks on his own; for he is a liar, and the father of it. NIV 44 You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father's desire. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies. WEB 45 But because I tell the truth, you don't believe me. NIV 45 Yet because I tell the truth, you do not believe me! WEB 46 Which of you convicts me of sin? If I tell the truth, why do you not believe me? NIV 46 Can any of you prove me guilty of sin? If I am telling the truth, why don't you believe me? WEB 47 He who is of God hears the words of God. For this cause you don't hear, because you are not of God." NIV 47 He who belongs to God hears what God says. The reason you do not hear is that you do not belong to God." WEB 48 Then the Jews answered him, "Don't we say well that you are a Samaritan, and have a demon?" NIV 48 The Jews answered him, "Aren't we right in saying that you are a Samaritan and demon-possessed?" WEB 49 Jesus answered, "I don't have a demon, but I honor my Father, and you dishonor me. NIV 49 "I am not possessed by a demon," said Jesus, "but I honor my Father and you dishonor me. WEB 50 But I don't seek my own glory. There is one who seeks and judges. NIV 50 I am not seeking glory for myself; but there is one who seeks it, and he is the judge. WEB 51 Most assuredly, I tell you, if a person keeps my word, he will never see death." NIV 51 I tell you the truth, if anyone keeps my word, he will never see death." WEB 52 Then the Jews said to him, "Now we know that you have a demon. Abraham died, and the prophets; and you say, 'If a man keeps my word, he will never taste of death.' NIV 52 At this the Jews exclaimed, "Now we know that you are demon-possessed! Abraham died and so did the prophets, yet you say that if anyone keeps your word, he will never taste death. WEB 53 Are you greater than our father, Abraham, who died? The prophets died. Who do you make yourself out to be?" NIV 53 Are you greater than our father Abraham? He died, and so did the prophets. Who do you think you are?" WEB 54 Jesus answered, "If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing. It is my Father who glorifies me, of whom you say that he is our God. NIV 54 Jesus replied, "If I glorify myself, my glory means nothing. My Father, whom you claim as your God, is the one who glorifies me. WEB 55 You have not known him, but I know him. If I said, 'I don't know him,' I would be like you, a liar. But I know him, and keep his word. NIV 55 Though you do not know him, I know him. If I said I did not, I would be a liar like you, but I do know him and keep his word. WEB 56 Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day. He saw it, and was glad." NIV 56 Your father Abraham rejoiced at the thought of seeing my day; he saw it and was glad." WEB 57 The Jews therefore said to him, "You are not yet fifty years old, and have you seen Abraham?" NIV 57 "You are not yet fifty years old," the Jews said to him, "and you have seen Abraham!" WEB 58 Jesus said to them, "Most assuredly, I tell you, before Abraham was born, I AM." NIV 58 "I tell you the truth," Jesus answered, "before Abraham was born, I am!" WEB 59 They took up stones therefore to throw at him, but Jesus hid himself, and went out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed by. NIV 59 At this, they picked up stones to stone him, but Jesus hid himself, slipping away from the temple grounds.
