Joshua 2

NKJV 1 Now Joshua the son of Nun sent out two men from Acacia Grove to spy secretly, saying, "Go, view the land, especially Jericho." So they went, and came to the house of a harlot named Rahab, and lodged there. NIV 1 Then Joshua son of Nun secretly sent two spies from Shittim. "Go, look over the land," he said, "especially Jericho." So they went and entered the house of a prostitute named Rahab and stayed there. NKJV 2 And it was told the king of Jericho, saying, "Behold, men have come here tonight from the children of Israel to search out the country." NIV 2 The king of Jericho was told, "Look! Some of the Israelites have come here tonight to spy out the land." NKJV 3 So the king of Jericho sent to Rahab, saying, "Bring out the men who have come to you, who have entered your house, for they have come to search out all the country." NIV 3 So the king of Jericho sent this message to Rahab: "Bring out the men who came to you and entered your house, because they have come to spy out the whole land." NKJV 4 Then the woman took the two men and hid them. So she said, "Yes, the men came to me, but I did not know where they were from. NIV 4 But the woman had taken the two men and hidden them. She said, "Yes, the men came to me, but I did not know where they had come from. NKJV 5 And it happened as the gate was being shut, when it was dark, that the men went out. Where the men went I do not know; pursue them quickly, for you may overtake them." NIV 5 At dusk, when it was time to close the city gate, the men left. I don't know which way they went. Go after them quickly. You may catch up with them." NKJV 6 (But she had brought them up to the roof and hidden them with the stalks of flax, which she had laid in order on the roof.) NIV 6 (But she had taken them up to the roof and hidden them under the stalks of flax she had laid out on the roof.) NKJV 7 Then the men pursued them by the road to the Jordan, to the fords. And as soon as those who pursued them had gone out, they shut the gate. NIV 7 So the men set out in pursuit of the spies on the road that leads to the fords of the Jordan, and as soon as the pursuers had gone out, the gate was shut. NKJV 8 Now before they lay down, she came up to them on the roof, NIV 8 Before the spies lay down for the night, she went up on the roof NKJV 9 and said to the men: "I know that the Lord has given you the land, that the terror of you has fallen on us, and that all the inhabitants of the land are fainthearted because of you. NIV 9 and said to them, "I know that the LORD has given this land to you and that a great fear of you has fallen on us, so that all who live in this country are melting in fear because of you. NKJV 10 For we have heard how the Lord dried up the water of the Red Sea for you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to the two kings of the Amorites who were on the other side of the Jordan, Sihon and Og, whom you utterly destroyed. NIV 10 We have heard how the LORD dried up the water of the Red Sea for you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to Sihon and Og, the two kings of the Amorites east of the Jordan, whom you completely destroyed. NKJV 11 And as soon as we heard these things, our hearts melted; neither did there remain any more courage in anyone because of you, for the Lord your God, He is God in heaven above and on earth beneath. NIV 11 When we heard of it, our hearts melted and everyone's courage failed because of you, for the LORD your God is God in heaven above and on the earth below. NKJV 12 Now therefore, I beg you, swear to me by the Lord, since I have shown you kindness, that you also will show kindness to my father's house, and give me a true token, NIV 12 Now then, please swear to me by the LORD that you will show kindness to my family, because I have shown kindness to you. Give me a sure sign NKJV 13 and spare my father, my mother, my brothers, my sisters, and all that they have, and deliver our lives from death." NIV 13 that you will spare the lives of my father and mother, my brothers and sisters, and all who belong to them, and that you will save us from death." NKJV 14 So the men answered her, "Our lives for yours, if none of you tell this business of ours. And it shall be, when the Lord has given us the land, that we will deal kindly and truly with you." NIV 14 "Our lives for your lives!" the men assured her. "If you don't tell what we are doing, we will treat you kindly and faithfully when the LORD gives us the land." NKJV 15 Then she let them down by a rope through the window, for her house was on the city wall; she dwelt on the wall. NIV 15 So she let them down by a rope through the window, for the house she lived in was part of the city wall. NKJV 16 And she said to them, "Get to the mountain, lest the pursuers meet you. Hide there three days, until the pursuers have returned. Afterward you may go your way." NIV 16 Now she had said to them, "Go to the hills so the pursuers will not find you. Hide yourselves there three days until they return, and then go on your way." NKJV 17 So the men said to her: "We will be blameless of this oath of yours which you have made us swear, NIV 17 The men said to her, "This oath you made us swear will not be binding on us NKJV 18 unless, when we come into the land, you bind this line of scarlet cord in the window through which you let us down, and unless you bring your father, your mother, your brothers, and all your father's household to your own home. NIV 18 unless, when we enter the land, you have tied this scarlet cord in the window through which you let us down, and unless you have brought your father and mother, your brothers and all your family into your house. NKJV 19 So it shall be that whoever goes outside the doors of your house into the street, his blood shall be on his own head, and we will be guiltless. And whoever is with you in the house, his blood shall be on our head if a hand is laid on him. NIV 19 If anyone goes outside your house into the street, his blood will be on his own head; we will not be responsible. As for anyone who is in the house with you, his blood will be on our head if a hand is laid on him. NKJV 20 And if you tell this business of ours, then we will be free from your oath which you made us swear." NIV 20 But if you tell what we are doing, we will be released from the oath you made us swear." NKJV 21 Then she said, "According to your words, so be it." And she sent them away, and they departed. And she bound the scarlet cord in the window. NIV 21 "Agreed," she replied. "Let it be as you say." So she sent them away and they departed. And she tied the scarlet cord in the window. NKJV 22 They departed and went to the mountain, and stayed there three days until the pursuers returned. The pursuers sought them all along the way, but did not find them. NIV 22 When they left, they went into the hills and stayed there three days, until the pursuers had searched all along the road and returned without finding them. NKJV 23 So the two men returned, descended from the mountain, and crossed over; and they came to Joshua the son of Nun, and told him all that had befallen them. NIV 23 Then the two men started back. They went down out of the hills, forded the river and came to Joshua son of Nun and told him everything that had happened to them. NKJV 24 And they said to Joshua, "Truly the Lord has delivered all the land into our hands, for indeed all the inhabitants of the country are fainthearted because of us." NIV 24 They said to Joshua, "The LORD has surely given the whole land into our hands; all the people are melting in fear because of us."
