Joshua 2

WBT 1 And Joshua the son of Nun sent from Shittim two men to spy secretly, saying, Go, view the land, even Jericho. And they went, and came into the house of a harlot, named Rahab, and lodged there. NIV 1 Then Joshua son of Nun secretly sent two spies from Shittim. "Go, look over the land," he said, "especially Jericho." So they went and entered the house of a prostitute named Rahab and stayed there. WBT 2 And it was told the king of Jericho, saying, Behold, there came men in hither to-night of the children of Israel, to search out the country. NIV 2 The king of Jericho was told, "Look! Some of the Israelites have come here tonight to spy out the land." WBT 3 And the king of Jericho sent to Rahab, saying, Bring forth the men that have come to thee, who have entered into thy house: for they have come to search out all the country. NIV 3 So the king of Jericho sent this message to Rahab: "Bring out the men who came to you and entered your house, because they have come to spy out the whole land." WBT 4 And the woman took the two men, and hid them, and said thus, There came men to me, but I knew not whence they [were]: NIV 4 But the woman had taken the two men and hidden them. She said, "Yes, the men came to me, but I did not know where they had come from. WBT 5 And it came to pass [about the time] of shutting the gate, when it was dark, that the men went out: whither the men went, I know not: pursue after them quickly; for ye will overtake them. NIV 5 At dusk, when it was time to close the city gate, the men left. I don't know which way they went. Go after them quickly. You may catch up with them." WBT 6 But she had brought them up to the roof of the house, and hid them with the stalks of flax, which she had laid in order upon the roof. NIV 6 (But she had taken them up to the roof and hidden them under the stalks of flax she had laid out on the roof.) WBT 7 And the men pursued them the way to Jordan to the fords: and as soon as they who pursued them had gone out, they shut the gate. NIV 7 So the men set out in pursuit of the spies on the road that leads to the fords of the Jordan, and as soon as the pursuers had gone out, the gate was shut. WBT 8 And before they had lain down, she came up to them upon the roof; NIV 8 Before the spies lay down for the night, she went up on the roof WBT 9 And she said to the men, I know that the LORD hath given you the land, and that your terror hath fallen upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land faint because of you. NIV 9 and said to them, "I know that the LORD has given this land to you and that a great fear of you has fallen on us, so that all who live in this country are melting in fear because of you. WBT 10 For we have heard how the LORD dried up the water of the Red sea for you, when ye came out of Egypt; and what ye did to the two kings of the Amorites, that [were] on the other side of Jordan, Sihon and Og, whom ye utterly destroyed. NIV 10 We have heard how the LORD dried up the water of the Red Sea for you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to Sihon and Og, the two kings of the Amorites east of the Jordan, whom you completely destroyed. WBT 11 And as soon as we had heard [these things], our hearts did melt, neither did there remain any more courage in any man, because of you: for the LORD your God, he [is] God in heaven above, and in earth beneath. NIV 11 When we heard of it, our hearts melted and everyone's courage failed because of you, for the LORD your God is God in heaven above and on the earth below. WBT 12 Now therefore, I pray you, swear to me by the LORD, since I have showed you kindness, that ye will also show kindness to my father's house, and give me a true token: NIV 12 Now then, please swear to me by the LORD that you will show kindness to my family, because I have shown kindness to you. Give me a sure sign WBT 13 And [that] ye will save alive my father, and my mother, and my brethren, and my sisters, and all that they have, and deliver our lives from death. NIV 13 that you will spare the lives of my father and mother, my brothers and sisters, and all who belong to them, and that you will save us from death." WBT 14 And the men answered her, Our life for yours, if ye utter not this our business. And it shall be, when the LORD hath given us the land, that we will deal kindly and truly with thee. NIV 14 "Our lives for your lives!" the men assured her. "If you don't tell what we are doing, we will treat you kindly and faithfully when the LORD gives us the land." WBT 15 Then she let them down by a cord through the window: for her house [was] upon the town-wall, and she dwelt upon the wall. NIV 15 So she let them down by a rope through the window, for the house she lived in was part of the city wall. WBT 16 And she said to them, Depart to the mountain, lest the pursuers meet you; and hide yourselves there three days, until the pursuers have returned: and afterward ye may go your way. NIV 16 Now she had said to them, "Go to the hills so the pursuers will not find you. Hide yourselves there three days until they return, and then go on your way." WBT 17 And the men said to her, We [will be] blameless of this thy oath which thou hast made us swear. NIV 17 The men said to her, "This oath you made us swear will not be binding on us WBT 18 Behold, [when] we come into the land, thou shalt bind this line of scarlet thread in the window by which thou didst let us down: and thou shalt bring thy father, and thy mother, and thy brethren, and all thy father's household home to thee. NIV 18 unless, when we enter the land, you have tied this scarlet cord in the window through which you let us down, and unless you have brought your father and mother, your brothers and all your family into your house. WBT 19 And it shall be, [that] whoever shall go out of the doors of thy house into the street, his blood [shall be] upon his head, and we [will be] guiltless: and whoever shall be with thee in the house, his blood [shall be] on our head, if [any] hand be upon him. NIV 19 If anyone goes outside your house into the street, his blood will be on his own head; we will not be responsible. As for anyone who is in the house with you, his blood will be on our head if a hand is laid on him. WBT 20 And if thou shalt utter this our business, then we will be quit of thy oath which thou hast made us to swear. NIV 20 But if you tell what we are doing, we will be released from the oath you made us swear." WBT 21 And she said, According to your words, so [be] it. And she sent them away, and they departed: and she bound the scarlet line in the window. NIV 21 "Agreed," she replied. "Let it be as you say." So she sent them away and they departed. And she tied the scarlet cord in the window. WBT 22 And they went, and came to the mountain, and abode there three days, until the pursuers had returned: and the pursuers sought [them] throughout all the way, but found [them] not. NIV 22 When they left, they went into the hills and stayed there three days, until the pursuers had searched all along the road and returned without finding them. WBT 23 So the two men returned, and descended from the mountain, and passed over, and came to Joshua the son of Nun, and told him all [things] that befell them: NIV 23 Then the two men started back. They went down out of the hills, forded the river and came to Joshua son of Nun and told him everything that had happened to them. WBT 24 And they said to Joshua, Truly the LORD hath delivered into our hands all the land; for even all the inhabitants of the country do faint because of us. NIV 24 They said to Joshua, "The LORD has surely given the whole land into our hands; all the people are melting in fear because of us."
