Judges 20:13-23

NRS 13 Now then, hand over those scoundrels in Gibeah, so that we may put them to death, and purge the evil from Israel." But the Benjaminites would not listen to their kinsfolk, the Israelites. NIV 13 Now surrender those wicked men of Gibeah so that we may put them to death and purge the evil from Israel." But the Benjamites would not listen to their fellow Israelites. NRS 14 The Benjaminites came together out of the towns to Gibeah, to go out to battle against the Israelites. NIV 14 From their towns they came together at Gibeah to fight against the Israelites. NRS 15 On that day the Benjaminites mustered twenty-six thousand armed men from their towns, besides the inhabitants of Gibeah. NIV 15 At once the Benjamites mobilized twenty-six thousand swordsmen from their towns, in addition to seven hundred chosen men from those living in Gibeah. NRS 16 Of all this force, there were seven hundred picked men who were left-handed; every one could sling a stone at a hair, and not miss. NRS 18 The Israelites proceeded to go up to Bethel, where they inquired of God, "Which of us shall go up first to battle against the Benjaminites?" And the Lord answered, "Judah shall go up first." NIV 18 The Israelites went up to Bethel and inquired of God. They said, "Who of us shall go first to fight against the Benjamites?" The LORD replied, "Judah shall go first." NRS 19 Then the Israelites got up in the morning, and encamped against Gibeah. NIV 19 The next morning the Israelites got up and pitched camp near Gibeah. NRS 20 The Israelites went out to battle against Benjamin; and the Israelites drew up the battle line against them at Gibeah. NIV 20 The men of Israel went out to fight the Benjamites and took up battle positions against them at Gibeah. NRS 21 The Benjaminites came out of Gibeah, and struck down on that day twenty-two thousand of the Israelites. NIV 21 The Benjamites came out of Gibeah and cut down twenty-two thousand Israelites on the battlefield that day. NRS 22 The Israelites took courage, and again formed the battle line in the same place where they had formed it on the first day. NIV 22 But the men of Israel encouraged one another and again took up their positions where they had stationed themselves the first day. NRS 23 The Israelites went up and wept before the Lord until the evening; and they inquired of the Lord, "Shall we again draw near to battle against our kinsfolk the Benjaminites?" And the Lord said, "Go up against them." NIV 23 The Israelites went up and wept before the LORD until evening, and they inquired of the LORD. They said, "Shall we go up again to battle against the Benjamites, our brothers?" The LORD answered, "Go up against them."
