Judges 8:7-17

NLT 7 So Gideon said, "After the LORD gives me victory over Zebah and Zalmunna, I will return and tear your flesh with the thorns and briers of the wilderness." NIV 7 Then Gideon replied, "Just for that, when the LORD has given Zebah and Zalmunna into my hand, I will tear your flesh with desert thorns and briers." NLT 8 From there Gideon went up to Peniel and asked for food, but he got the same answer. NIV 8 From there he went up to Peniel and made the same request of them, but they answered as the men of Succoth had. NLT 9 So he said to the people of Peniel, "After I return in victory, I will tear down this tower." NIV 9 So he said to the men of Peniel, "When I return in triumph, I will tear down this tower." NLT 10 By this time Zebah and Zalmunna were in Karkor with a remnant of 15,000 warriors -- all that remained of the allied armies of the east -- for 120,000 had already been killed. NIV 10 Now Zebah and Zalmunna were in Karkor with a force of about fifteen thousand men, all that were left of the armies of the eastern peoples; a hundred and twenty thousand swordsmen had fallen. NLT 11 Gideon circled around by the caravan route east of Nobah and Jogbehah, taking the Midianite army by surprise. NIV 11 Gideon went up by the route of the nomads east of Nobah and Jogbehah and fell upon the unsuspecting army. NLT 12 Zebah and Zalmunna, the two Midianite kings, fled, but Gideon chased them down and captured all their warriors. NIV 12 Zebah and Zalmunna, the two kings of Midian, fled, but he pursued them and captured them, routing their entire army. NLT 13 After this, Gideon returned by way of Heres Pass. NIV 13 Gideon son of Joash then returned from the battle by the Pass of Heres. NLT 14 There he captured a young man from Succoth and demanded that he write down the names of all the seventy-seven rulers and leaders in the town. NIV 14 He caught a young man of Succoth and questioned him, and the young man wrote down for him the names of the seventy-seven officials of Succoth, the elders of the town. NLT 15 Gideon then returned to Succoth and said to the leaders, "Here are Zebah and Zalmunna. When we were here before, you taunted me, saying, 'You haven't caught Zebah and Zalmunna yet. Catch them first, and then we will feed your exhausted warriors.'" NIV 15 Then Gideon came and said to the men of Succoth, "Here are Zebah and Zalmunna, about whom you taunted me by saying, 'Do you already have the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna in your possession? Why should we give bread to your exhausted men?' " NLT 16 Then Gideon took the leaders of the town and taught them a lesson, punishing them with thorns and briers from the wilderness. NIV 16 He took the elders of the town and taught the men of Succoth a lesson by punishing them with desert thorns and briers. NLT 17 He also knocked down the tower of Peniel and killed all the men in the town. NIV 17 He also pulled down the tower of Peniel and killed the men of the town.
