Lamentations 3

CJB 1 I am the man who has seen affliction under the rod of his fury, NIV 1 I am the man who has seen affliction by the rod of his wrath. CJB 2 He has led me and made me walk in darkness and not in light. NIV 2 He has driven me away and made me walk in darkness rather than light; CJB 3 Against me alone he turns his hand again and again, all day. NIV 3 indeed, he has turned his hand against me again and again, all day long. CJB 4 He has worn away my skin and flesh, he has broken my bones. NIV 4 He has made my skin and my flesh grow old and has broken my bones. CJB 5 He has besieged and surrounded me with bitterness and hardship. NIV 5 He has besieged me and surrounded me with bitterness and hardship. CJB 6 He has made me live in darkness, like those who are long dead. NIV 6 He has made me dwell in darkness like those long dead. CJB 7 He has walled me in, so I can't escape; he has weighed me down with chains. NIV 7 He has walled me in so I cannot escape; he has weighed me down with chains. CJB 8 Even when I cry out, pleading for help, he shuts out my prayer. NIV 8 Even when I call out or cry for help, he shuts out my prayer. CJB 9 He has barred my way with blocks of stone, he has made my paths crooked. NIV 9 He has barred my way with blocks of stone; he has made my paths crooked. CJB 10 He lies in wait for me like a bear, like a lion in hiding. NIV 10 Like a bear lying in wait, like a lion in hiding, CJB 11 He has forced me aside and torn me to pieces, leaving me stunned. NIV 11 he dragged me from the path and mangled me and left me without help. CJB 12 He has bent his bow and used me as a target for his arrows. NIV 12 He drew his bow and made me the target for his arrows. CJB 13 He has pierced my vital organs with shafts from his quiver. NIV 13 He pierced my heart with arrows from his quiver. CJB 14 I'm a laughingstock to all my people, the butt of their taunts all day long. NIV 14 I became the laughingstock of all my people; they mock me in song all day long. CJB 15 He has filled me with bitterness, sated me with wormwood. NIV 15 He has filled me with bitter herbs and sated me with gall. CJB 16 He has broken my teeth with gravel and pressed me down into ashes. NIV 16 He has broken my teeth with gravel; he has trampled me in the dust. CJB 17 I have been so deprived of peace, I have so forgotten what happiness is, NIV 17 I have been deprived of peace; I have forgotten what prosperity is. CJB 18 that I think, "My strength is gone, and so is my hope in ADONAI." NIV 18 So I say, "My splendor is gone and all that I had hoped from the LORD." CJB 19 Remember my utter misery, the wormwood and the gall. NIV 19 I remember my affliction and my wandering, the bitterness and the gall. CJB 20 They are always on my mind; this is why I am so depressed. NIV 20 I well remember them, and my soul is downcast within me. CJB 21 But in my mind I keep returning to something, something that gives me hope - NIV 21 Yet this I call to mind and therefore I have hope: CJB 22 that the grace of ADONAI is not exhausted, that his compassion has not ended. NIV 22 Because of the LORD's great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. CJB 23 [On the contrary,] they are new every morning! How great your faithfulness! NIV 23 They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. CJB 24 "ADONAI is all I have," I say; "therefore I will put my hope in him. NIV 24 I say to myself, "The LORD is my portion; therefore I will wait for him." CJB 25 ADONAI is good to those waiting for him, to those who are seeking him out. NIV 25 The LORD is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one who seeks him; CJB 26 It is good to wait patiently for the saving help of ADONAI. NIV 26 it is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the LORD. CJB 27 It is good for a man to bear the yoke from his youth. NIV 27 It is good for a man to bear the yoke while he is young. CJB 28 Let him sit alone in silence when he has laid it on him. NIV 28 Let him sit alone in silence, for the LORD has laid it on him. CJB 29 Let him submit absolutely; there may yet be hope. NIV 29 Let him bury his face in the dust-- there may yet be hope. CJB 30 Let him offer his cheek to the one who strikes it, and receive his fill of insults. NIV 30 Let him offer his cheek to one who would strike him, and let him be filled with disgrace. CJB 31 For rejection by Adonai does not last forever. NIV 31 For men are not cast off by the Lord forever. CJB 32 He may cause grief, but he will take pity, in keeping with the greatness of his grace. NIV 32 Though he brings grief, he will show compassion, so great is his unfailing love. CJB 33 For he does not arbitrarily torment or punish human beings. NIV 33 For he does not willingly bring affliction or grief to the children of men. CJB 34 When anyone tramples underfoot any of the prisoners of the land; NIV 34 To crush underfoot all prisoners in the land, CJB 35 when anyone deprives a person of justice, in defiance of the Most High; NIV 35 to deny a man his rights before the Most High, CJB 36 when someone is cheated of justice in court -does Adonai not take note of such things? NIV 36 to deprive a man of justice-- would not the Lord see such things? CJB 37 Who can say something and have it happen without Adonai's commanding it? NIV 37 Who can speak and have it happen if the Lord has not decreed it? CJB 38 Don't both bad things and good proceed from the mouth of the Most High? NIV 38 Is it not from the mouth of the Most High that both calamities and good things come? CJB 39 Why should anyone alive complain, even a strong man, about the punishment for his sins? NIV 39 Why should any living man complain when punished for his sins? CJB 40 Let us examine and test our ways and return to ADONAI. NIV 40 Let us examine our ways and test them, and let us return to the LORD. CJB 41 Let us lift up our hearts and our hands to God in heaven and say, NIV 41 Let us lift up our hearts and our hands to God in heaven, and say: CJB 42 "We, for our part, have transgressed and rebelled; you, for your part, have not forgiven. NIV 42 "We have sinned and rebelled and you have not forgiven. CJB 43 "You have covered us with anger, pursued and slaughtered us without pity. NIV 43 "You have covered yourself with anger and pursued us; you have slain without pity. CJB 44 You have covered yourself with a cloud so thick that no prayer can pass through. NIV 44 You have covered yourself with a cloud so that no prayer can get through. CJB 45 You have reduced us to rubbish and filth among the peoples. NIV 45 You have made us scum and refuse among the nations. CJB 46 "All our adversaries open their mouths to jeer at us. NIV 46 "All our enemies have opened their mouths wide against us. CJB 47 Panic and pitfall have come upon us, desolation and destruction. NIV 47 We have suffered terror and pitfalls, ruin and destruction." CJB 48 My eyes stream with rivers of water over the destruction of the daughter of my people." NIV 48 Streams of tears flow from my eyes because my people are destroyed. CJB 49 My eyes weep ceaselessly; there is no respite, NIV 49 My eyes will flow unceasingly, without relief, CJB 50 until ADONAI looks down and sees from heaven. NIV 50 until the LORD looks down from heaven and sees. CJB 51 My eyes make me so upset at the fate of the women in my city. NIV 51 What I see brings grief to my soul because of all the women of my city. CJB 52 Those who are my enemies for no reason hunted me down like a bird. NIV 52 Those who were my enemies without cause hunted me like a bird. CJB 53 They forced me alive into a pit and threw stones on me. NIV 53 They tried to end my life in a pit and threw stones at me; CJB 54 Water rose above my head; I thought, "I am finished!" NIV 54 the waters closed over my head, and I thought I was about to be cut off. CJB 55 I called on your name, ADONAI, from the bottom of the pit. NIV 55 I called on your name, O LORD, from the depths of the pit. CJB 56 You heard my voice; don't close your ear at my sighs, at my cries. NIV 56 You heard my plea: "Do not close your ears to my cry for relief." CJB 57 You came near when I called to you; you said, "Don't be afraid." NIV 57 You came near when I called you, and you said, "Do not fear." CJB 58 Adonai, you defended my cause; you redeemed my life. NIV 58 O Lord, you took up my case; you redeemed my life. CJB 59 ADONAI, you see how I have been wronged; give judgment in my favor! NIV 59 You have seen, O LORD, the wrong done to me. Uphold my cause! CJB 60 You have seen all their vindictiveness and all their plots against me. NIV 60 You have seen the depth of their vengeance, all their plots against me. CJB 61 You have heard their taunts, ADONAI, and all their plots against me, NIV 61 O LORD, you have heard their insults, all their plots against me-- CJB 62 the whispered murmurings of my foes against me all day long. NIV 62 what my enemies whisper and mutter against me all day long. CJB 63 See how, whether they sit or stand, I am the butt of their taunts. NIV 63 Look at them! Sitting or standing, they mock me in their songs. CJB 64 Repay them, ADONAI, as their deeds deserve. NIV 64 Pay them back what they deserve, O LORD, for what their hands have done. CJB 65 Give them hardheartedness as your curse on them. NIV 65 Put a veil over their hearts, and may your curse be on them! CJB 66 Pursue them in anger! Destroy them from under your heavens! NIV 66 Pursue them in anger and destroy them from under the heavens of the LORD.
