Lamentations 5

CSB 1 Yahweh, remember what has happened to us. Look, and see our disgrace! NIV 1 Remember, O LORD, what has happened to us; look, and see our disgrace. CSB 2 Our inheritance has been turned over to strangers, our houses to foreigners. NIV 2 Our inheritance has been turned over to aliens, our homes to foreigners. CSB 3 We have become orphans, fatherless; our mothers are widows. NIV 3 We have become orphans and fatherless, our mothers like widows. CSB 4 We must pay for the water we drink; our wood comes at a price. NIV 4 We must buy the water we drink; our wood can be had only at a price. CSB 5 We are closely pursued; we are tired, and no one offers us rest. NIV 5 Those who pursue us are at our heels; we are weary and find no rest. CSB 6 We made a treaty with Egypt and with Assyria, to get enough food. NIV 6 We submitted to Egypt and Assyria to get enough bread. CSB 7 Our fathers sinned; they no longer exist, but we bear their punishment. NIV 7 Our fathers sinned and are no more, and we bear their punishment. CSB 8 Slaves rule over us; no one rescues [us] from their hands. NIV 8 Slaves rule over us, and there is none to free us from their hands. CSB 9 We secure our food at the risk of our lives because of the sword in the wilderness. NIV 9 We get our bread at the risk of our lives because of the sword in the desert. CSB 10 Our skin is as hot as an oven from the ravages of hunger. NIV 10 Our skin is hot as an oven, feverish from hunger. CSB 11 Women are raped in Zion, virgins in the cities of Judah. NIV 11 Women have been ravished in Zion, and virgins in the towns of Judah. CSB 12 Princes are hung up by their hands; elders are shown no respect. NIV 12 Princes have been hung up by their hands; elders are shown no respect. CSB 13 Young men labor at millstones; boys stumble under [loads of] wood. NIV 13 Young men toil at the millstones; boys stagger under loads of wood. CSB 14 The elders have left the city gate, the young men, their music. NIV 14 The elders are gone from the city gate; the young men have stopped their music. CSB 15 Joy has left our hearts; our dancing has turned to mourning. NIV 15 Joy is gone from our hearts; our dancing has turned to mourning. CSB 16 The crown has fallen from our head. Woe to us, for we have sinned. NIV 16 The crown has fallen from our head. Woe to us, for we have sinned! CSB 17 Because of this, our heart is sick; because of these, our eyes grow dim: NIV 17 Because of this our hearts are faint, because of these things our eyes grow dim CSB 18 because of Mount Zion, which lies desolate [and has] jackals prowling in it. NIV 18 for Mount Zion, which lies desolate, with jackals prowling over it. CSB 19 You, Lord, are enthroned forever; Your throne endures from generation to generation. NIV 19 You, O LORD, reign forever; your throne endures from generation to generation. CSB 20 Why have You forgotten us forever, abandoned us for [our] entire lives? NIV 20 Why do you always forget us? Why do you forsake us so long? CSB 21 Lord, restore us to Yourself, so we may return; renew our days as in former times, NIV 21 Restore us to yourself, O LORD, that we may return; renew our days as of old CSB 22 unless You have completely rejected us and are intensely angry with us. NIV 22 unless you have utterly rejected us and are angry with us beyond measure.
