Leviticus 21

CJB 1 ADONAI said to Moshe, "Speak to the cohanim, the sons of Aharon; tell them: 'No cohen is to make himself unclean for any of his people who dies, NIV 1 The LORD said to Moses, "Speak to the priests, the sons of Aaron, and say to them: 'A priest must not make himself ceremonially unclean for any of his people who die, CJB 2 except for his close relatives -his mother, father, son, daughter and brother; NIV 2 except for a close relative, such as his mother or father, his son or daughter, his brother, CJB 3 he may also make himself unclean for his virgin sister who has never married and is therefore dependent on him. NIV 3 or an unmarried sister who is dependent on him since she has no husband--for her he may make himself unclean. CJB 4 He may not make himself unclean, because he is a leader among his people; doing so would profane him. NIV 4 He must not make himself unclean for people related to him by marriage, and so defile himself. CJB 5 Cohanim are not to make bald spots on their heads, mar the edges of their beards or cut gashes in their flesh. NIV 5 " 'Priests must not shave their heads or shave off the edges of their beards or cut their bodies. CJB 6 Rather, they are to be holy for their God and not profane the name of their God. For they are the ones who present ADONAI with offerings made by fire, the bread of their God; therefore they must be holy. NIV 6 They must be holy to their God and must not profane the name of their God. Because they present the offerings made to the LORD by fire, the food of their God, they are to be holy. CJB 7 "'A cohen is not to marry a woman who is a prostitute, who has been profaned or who has been divorced; because he is holy for his God. NIV 7 " 'They must not marry women defiled by prostitution or divorced from their husbands, because priests are holy to their God. CJB 8 Rather, you are to set him apart as holy, because he offers the bread of your God; he is to be holy for you, because I, ADONAI, who makes you holy, am holy. NIV 8 Regard them as holy, because they offer up the food of your God. Consider them holy, because I the LORD am holy--I who make you holy. CJB 9 The daughter of a cohen who profanes herself by prostitution profanes her father; she is to be put to death by fire. NIV 9 " 'If a priest's daughter defiles herself by becoming a prostitute, she disgraces her father; she must be burned in the fire. CJB 10 "'The cohen who is ranked highest among his brothers, the one on whose head the anointing oil is poured and who is consecrated to put on the garments, is not to stop grooming his hair, tear his clothes, NIV 10 " 'The high priest, the one among his brothers who has had the anointing oil poured on his head and who has been ordained to wear the priestly garments, must not let his hair become unkempt or tear his clothes. CJB 11 go in to where any dead body is or make himself unclean, even when his father or mother dies. NIV 11 He must not enter a place where there is a dead body. He must not make himself unclean, even for his father or mother, CJB 12 He may not leave the sanctuary then or profane the sanctuary of his God, because the consecration of the anointing oil of his God is on him; I am ADONAI. NIV 12 nor leave the sanctuary of his God or desecrate it, because he has been dedicated by the anointing oil of his God. I am the LORD. CJB 13 "'He is to marry a virgin; NIV 13 " 'The woman he marries must be a virgin. CJB 14 he may not marry a widow, divorcee, profaned woman or prostitute; but he must marry a virgin from among his own people NIV 14 He must not marry a widow, a divorced woman, or a woman defiled by prostitution, but only a virgin from his own people, CJB 15 and not disqualify his descendants among his people; because I am ADONAI, who makes him holy.'" NIV 15 so he will not defile his offspring among his people. I am the LORD, who makes him holy. ' " CJB 16 ADONAI said to Moshe, NIV 16 The LORD said to Moses, CJB 17 "Tell Aharon, 'None of your descendants who has a defect may approach to offer the bread of his God. NIV 17 "Say to Aaron: 'For the generations to come none of your descendants who has a defect may come near to offer the food of his God. CJB 18 No one with a defect may approach - no one blind, lame, with a mutilated face or a limb too long, NIV 18 No man who has any defect may come near: no man who is blind or lame, disfigured or deformed; CJB 19 a broken foot or a broken arm, NIV 19 no man with a crippled foot or hand, CJB 20 a hunched back, stunted growth, a cataract in his eye, festering or running sores, or damaged testicles - NIV 20 or who is hunchbacked or dwarfed, or who has any eye defect, or who has festering or running sores or damaged testicles. CJB 21 no one descended from Aharon the cohen who has such a defect may approach to present the offerings for ADONAI made by fire; he has a defect and is not to approach to offer the bread of his God. NIV 21 No descendant of Aaron the priest who has any defect is to come near to present the offerings made to the LORD by fire. He has a defect; he must not come near to offer the food of his God. CJB 22 He may eat the bread of his God, both the especially holy and the holy; NIV 22 He may eat the most holy food of his God, as well as the holy food; CJB 23 only he is not to go in to the curtain or approach the altar, because he has a defect - so that he will not profane my holy places, because I am ADONAI, who makes them holy.'" NIV 23 yet because of his defect, he must not go near the curtain or approach the altar, and so desecrate my sanctuary. I am the LORD, who makes them holy.' " CJB 24 Moshe said these things to Aharon, his sons and all the people of Isra'el. NIV 24 So Moses told this to Aaron and his sons and to all the Israelites.
