Leviticus 21

CSB 1 The Lord said to Moses: "Speak to Aaron's sons, the priests, and tell them: A priest is not to make himself ceremonially unclean for a [dead] person among his relatives, NIV 1 The LORD said to Moses, "Speak to the priests, the sons of Aaron, and say to them: 'A priest must not make himself ceremonially unclean for any of his people who die, CSB 2 except for his immediate family: his mother, father, son, daughter, or brother. NIV 2 except for a close relative, such as his mother or father, his son or daughter, his brother, CSB 3 He may make himself unclean for his young unmarried sister in his immediate family. NIV 3 or an unmarried sister who is dependent on him since she has no husband--for her he may make himself unclean. CSB 4 He is not to make himself unclean for those related to him by marriage and so defile himself. NIV 4 He must not make himself unclean for people related to him by marriage, and so defile himself. CSB 5 "Priests may not make bald spots on their heads, shave the edge of their beards, or make gashes on their bodies. NIV 5 " 'Priests must not shave their heads or shave off the edges of their beards or cut their bodies. CSB 6 They are to be holy to their God and not profane the name of their God, because they present the fire offerings to the Lord, the food of their God. They must be holy. NIV 6 They must be holy to their God and must not profane the name of their God. Because they present the offerings made to the LORD by fire, the food of their God, they are to be holy. CSB 7 They are not to marry a woman defiled by prostitution or divorced by her husband, for the priest is holy to his God. NIV 7 " 'They must not marry women defiled by prostitution or divorced from their husbands, because priests are holy to their God. CSB 8 You are to consider him holy since he presents the food of your God. He will be holy to you because I, the Lord who sets you apart, am holy. NIV 8 Regard them as holy, because they offer up the food of your God. Consider them holy, because I the LORD am holy--I who make you holy. CSB 9 If a priest's daughter defiles herself by promiscuity, she defiles her father; she must be burned up. NIV 9 " 'If a priest's daughter defiles herself by becoming a prostitute, she disgraces her father; she must be burned in the fire. CSB 10 "The priest who is highest among his brothers, who has had the anointing oil poured on his head and has been ordained to wear the garments, must not dishevel his hair or tear his garments. NIV 10 " 'The high priest, the one among his brothers who has had the anointing oil poured on his head and who has been ordained to wear the priestly garments, must not let his hair become unkempt or tear his clothes. CSB 11 He must not go near any dead person or make himself unclean [even] for his father or mother. NIV 11 He must not enter a place where there is a dead body. He must not make himself unclean, even for his father or mother, CSB 12 He must not leave the sanctuary or he will desecrate the sanctuary of his God, for the consecration of the anointing oil of his God is on him; I am the Lord. NIV 12 nor leave the sanctuary of his God or desecrate it, because he has been dedicated by the anointing oil of his God. I am the LORD. CSB 13 "He is to marry a woman who is a virgin. NIV 13 " 'The woman he marries must be a virgin. CSB 14 He is not to marry a widow, a divorced woman, or one defiled by prostitution. He is to marry a virgin from his own people, NIV 14 He must not marry a widow, a divorced woman, or a woman defiled by prostitution, but only a virgin from his own people, CSB 15 so that he does not corrupt his bloodline among his people, for I am the Lord who sets him apart." NIV 15 so he will not defile his offspring among his people. I am the LORD, who makes him holy. ' " CSB 16 The Lord spoke to Moses: NIV 16 The LORD said to Moses, CSB 17 "Tell Aaron: None of your descendants throughout your generations who has a physical defect is to come near to present the food of his God. NIV 17 "Say to Aaron: 'For the generations to come none of your descendants who has a defect may come near to offer the food of his God. CSB 18 No man who has any defect is to come near: no man who is blind, lame, facially disfigured, or deformed; NIV 18 No man who has any defect may come near: no man who is blind or lame, disfigured or deformed; CSB 19 no man who has a broken foot or hand, NIV 19 no man with a crippled foot or hand, CSB 20 or who is a hunchback or a dwarf, or who has an eye defect, a festering rash, scabs, or a crushed testicle. NIV 20 or who is hunchbacked or dwarfed, or who has any eye defect, or who has festering or running sores or damaged testicles. CSB 21 No descendant of Aaron the priest who has a defect is to come near to present the fire offerings to the Lord. He has a defect and is not to come near to present the food of his God. NIV 21 No descendant of Aaron the priest who has any defect is to come near to present the offerings made to the LORD by fire. He has a defect; he must not come near to offer the food of his God. CSB 22 He may eat the food of his God from what is especially holy as well as from what is holy. NIV 22 He may eat the most holy food of his God, as well as the holy food; CSB 23 But because he has a defect, he must not go near the curtain or approach the altar. He is not to desecrate My sanctuaries, for I am the Lord who sets them apart." NIV 23 yet because of his defect, he must not go near the curtain or approach the altar, and so desecrate my sanctuary. I am the LORD, who makes them holy.' " CSB 24 Moses said [this] to Aaron and his sons and to all the Israelites. NIV 24 So Moses told this to Aaron and his sons and to all the Israelites.
