Luke 1

ASV 1 Forasmuch as many have taken in hand to draw up a narrative concerning those matters which have been fulfilled among us, NIV 1 Many have undertaken to draw up an account of the things that have been fulfilled among us, ASV 2 even as they delivered them unto us, who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and ministers of the word, NIV 2 just as they were handed down to us by those who from the first were eyewitnesses and servants of the word. ASV 3 it seemed good to me also, having traced the course of all things accurately from the first, to write unto thee in order, most excellent Theophilus; NIV 3 Therefore, since I myself have carefully investigated everything from the beginning, it seemed good also to me to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, ASV 4 that thou mightest know the certainty concerning the things wherein thou wast instructed. NIV 4 so that you may know the certainty of the things you have been taught. ASV 5 There was in the days of Herod, king of Judaea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abijah: and he had a wife of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth. NIV 5 In the time of Herod king of Judea there was a priest named Zechariah, who belonged to the priestly division of Abijah; his wife Elizabeth was also a descendant of Aaron. ASV 6 And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless. NIV 6 Both of them were upright in the sight of God, observing all the Lord's commandments and regulations blamelessly. ASV 7 And they had no child, because that Elisabeth was barren, and they both were [now] well stricken in years. NIV 7 But they had no children, because Elizabeth was barren; and they were both well along in years. ASV 8 Now it came to pass, while he executed the priest's office before God in the order of his course, NIV 8 Once when Zechariah's division was on duty and he was serving as priest before God, ASV 9 according to the custom of the priest's office, his lot was to enter into the temple of the Lord and burn incense. NIV 9 he was chosen by lot, according to the custom of the priesthood, to go into the temple of the Lord and burn incense. ASV 10 And the whole multitude of the people were praying without at the hour of incense. NIV 10 And when the time for the burning of incense came, all the assembled worshipers were praying outside. ASV 11 And there appeared unto him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of altar of incense. NIV 11 Then an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing at the right side of the altar of incense. ASV 12 And Zacharias was troubled when he saw [him], and fear fell upon him. NIV 12 When Zechariah saw him, he was startled and was gripped with fear. ASV 13 But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias: because thy supplication is heard, and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John. NIV 13 But the angel said to him: "Do not be afraid, Zechariah; your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to give him the name John. ASV 14 And thou shalt have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth. NIV 14 He will be a joy and delight to you, and many will rejoice because of his birth, ASV 15 For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and he shall drink no wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother's womb. NIV 15 for he will be great in the sight of the Lord. He is never to take wine or other fermented drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit even from birth. ASV 16 And many of the children of Israel shall be turn unto the Lord their God. NIV 16 Many of the people of Israel will he bring back to the Lord their God. ASV 17 And he shall go before his face in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient [to walk] in the wisdom of the just; to make ready for the Lord a people prepared [for him]. NIV 17 And he will go on before the Lord, in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous--to make ready a people prepared for the Lord." ASV 18 And Zacharias said unto the angel, Whereby shall I know this? for I am an old man, and my wife well stricken in years. NIV 18 Zechariah asked the angel, "How can I be sure of this? I am an old man and my wife is well along in years." ASV 19 And the angel answering said unto him, I am Gabriel, that stand in the presence of God; and I was sent to speak unto thee, and to bring thee these good tidings. NIV 19 The angel answered, "I am Gabriel. I stand in the presence of God, and I have been sent to speak to you and to tell you this good news. ASV 20 And behold, thou shalt be silent and not able to speak, until the day that these things shall come to pass, because thou believedst not my words, which shall be fulfilled in their season. NIV 20 And now you will be silent and not able to speak until the day this happens, because you did not believe my words, which will come true at their proper time." ASV 21 And the people were waiting for Zacharias, and they marvelled while he tarried in the temple. NIV 21 Meanwhile, the people were waiting for Zechariah and wondering why he stayed so long in the temple. ASV 22 And when he came out, he could not speak unto them: and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple: and he continued making signs unto them, and remained dumb. NIV 22 When he came out, he could not speak to them. They realized he had seen a vision in the temple, for he kept making signs to them but remained unable to speak. ASV 23 And it came to pass, when the days of his ministration were fulfilled, he departed unto his house. NIV 23 When his time of service was completed, he returned home. "In these days he has shown his favor and taken away my disgrace among the people." ASV 26 Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, NIV 26 In the sixth month, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, ASV 27 to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary. NIV 27 to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin's name was Mary. ASV 28 And he came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favored, the Lord [is] with thee. NIV 28 The angel went to her and said, "Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you." ASV 29 But she was greatly troubled at the saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this might be. NIV 29 Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. ASV 30 And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favor with God. NIV 30 But the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary, you have found favor with God. ASV 31 And behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS. NIV 31 You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus. ASV 32 He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Most High: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: NIV 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, ASV 33 and he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end. NIV 33 and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end." ASV 34 And Mary said unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man? NIV 34 "How will this be," Mary asked the angel, "since I am a virgin?" ASV 35 And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Spirit shall come upon thee, and the power of the Most High shall overshadow thee: wherefore also the holy thing which is begotten shall be called the Son of God. NIV 35 The angel answered, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. ASV 36 And behold, Elisabeth thy kinswoman, she also hath conceived a son in her old age; and this is the sixth month with her that was called barren. NIV 36 Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be barren is in her sixth month. ASV 37 For no word from God shall be void of power. NIV 37 For nothing is impossible with God." ASV 38 And Mary said, Behold, the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her. NIV 38 "I am the Lord's servant," Mary answered. "May it be to me as you have said." Then the angel left her. ASV 39 And Mary arose in these days and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Judah; NIV 39 At that time Mary got ready and hurried to a town in the hill country of Judea, ASV 40 and entered into the house of Zacharias and saluted Elisabeth. NIV 44 As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy.
