Luke 11

BBE 1 And it came about that he was in prayer in a certain place, and when he came to an end, one of his disciples said to him, Lord, will you give us teaching about prayer, as John did to his disciples? NIV 1 One day Jesus was praying in a certain place. When he finished, one of his disciples said to him, "Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples." BBE 2 And he said to them, When you say your prayers, say, Father, may your name be kept holy and your kingdom come. NIV 2 He said to them, "When you pray, say: " 'Father, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come. BBE 3 Give us every day bread for our needs. NIV 3 Give us each day our daily bread. BBE 4 May we have forgiveness for our sins, as we make free all those who are in debt to us. And let us not be put to the test. NIV 4 Forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who sins against us. And lead us not into temptation. ' " BBE 5 And he said to them, Which of you, having a friend, would go to him in the middle of the night and say to him, Friend, let me have three cakes of bread; NIV 5 Then he said to them, "Suppose one of you has a friend, and he goes to him at midnight and says, 'Friend, lend me three loaves of bread, BBE 6 Because a friend of mine has come to me on a journey, and I have nothing to put before him; NIV 6 because a friend of mine on a journey has come to me, and I have nothing to set before him.' BBE 7 And he, from inside the house, would say in answer, Do not be a trouble to me; the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed; it is not possible for me to get up and give to you? NIV 7 "Then the one inside answers, 'Don't bother me. The door is already locked, and my children are with me in bed. I can't get up and give you anything.' BBE 8 I say to you, Though he will not get up and give to him, because he is his friend, still, if he keeps on making his request, he will get up and give him as much as he has need of. NIV 8 I tell you, though he will not get up and give him the bread because he is his friend, yet because of the man's boldness he will get up and give him as much as he needs. BBE 9 And I say to you, Make requests, and they will be answered; what you are searching for, you will get; when you give the sign, the door will be open to you. NIV 9 "So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. BBE 10 For to everyone who makes a request, it will be given; and he who is searching will get his desire; and to him who gives the sign, the door will be open. NIV 10 For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened. BBE 11 And which of you, being a father, will give a stone to his son, who makes request for bread? or for a fish, will give him a snake? NIV 11 "Which of you fathers, if your son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead? BBE 12 Or for an egg, will give him a scorpion? NIV 12 Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? BBE 13 If, then, you who are evil are able to give good things to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who make request to him? NIV 13 If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!" BBE 14 And he was sending an evil spirit out of a man who was without the power of talking. And it came about that when the spirit had gone the man had the power of talking; and the people were full of wonder. NIV 14 Jesus was driving out a demon that was mute. When the demon left, the man who had been mute spoke, and the crowd was amazed. BBE 15 But some of them said, He sends out evil spirits by Beelzebul, the ruler of evil spirits. NIV 15 But some of them said, "By Beelzebub, the prince of demons, he is driving out demons." BBE 16 And others, testing him, were looking for a sign from heaven from him. NIV 16 Others tested him by asking for a sign from heaven. BBE 17 But he, having knowledge of their thoughts, said to them, Every kingdom in which there is division is made waste; and a house in which there is division comes to destruction. NIV 17 Jesus knew their thoughts and said to them: "Any kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and a house divided against itself will fall. BBE 18 If, then, Satan is at war with himself, how will he keep his kingdom? because you say that I send evil spirits out of men by the help of Beelzebul. NIV 18 If Satan is divided against himself, how can his kingdom stand? I say this because you claim that I drive out demons by Beelzebub. BBE 19 And if I, by Beelzebul, send out evil spirits, by whose help do your sons send them out? so let them be your judges. NIV 19 Now if I drive out demons by Beelzebub, by whom do your followers drive them out? So then, they will be your judges. BBE 20 But if I, by the finger of God, send out evil spirits, then the kingdom of God has overtaken you. NIV 20 But if I drive out demons by the finger of God, then the kingdom of God has come to you. BBE 21 When the strong man armed keeps watch over his house, then his goods are safe: NIV 21 "When a strong man, fully armed, guards his own house, his possessions are safe. BBE 22 But when one who is stronger makes an attack on him and overcomes him, he takes away his instruments of war, in which he had put his faith, and makes division of his goods. NIV 22 But when someone stronger attacks and overpowers him, he takes away the armor in which the man trusted and divides up the spoils. BBE 23 He who is not with me is against me, and he who will not give me help in getting people together is driving them away. NIV 23 "He who is not with me is against me, and he who does not gather with me, scatters. BBE 24 The unclean spirit, when he has gone out of a man, goes through dry places, looking for rest; and when he does not get it, he says, I will go back to my house from which I came. NIV 24 "When an evil spirit comes out of a man, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it. Then it says, 'I will return to the house I left.' BBE 25 And when he comes, he sees that it has been made fair and clean. NIV 25 When it arrives, it finds the house swept clean and put in order. BBE 26 Then he goes and gets seven other spirits more evil than himself, and they go in, and take their places there: and the last condition of that man is worse than the first. NIV 26 Then it goes and takes seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. And the final condition of that man is worse than the first." BBE 27 And it came about that when he said these things, a certain woman among the people said in a loud voice, Happy is the body which gave you birth, and the breasts from which you took milk. NIV 27 As Jesus was saying these things, a woman in the crowd called out, "Blessed is the mother who gave you birth and nursed you." BBE 28 But he said, More happy are they who give hearing to the word of God and keep it. NIV 28 He replied, "Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it." BBE 29 And when a great number of people came together to him, he said, This generation is an evil generation: it is looking for a sign and no sign will be given to it but the sign of Jonah. NIV 29 As the crowds increased, Jesus said, "This is a wicked generation. It asks for a miraculous sign, but none will be given it except the sign of Jonah. BBE 30 For even as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites, so will the Son of man be to this generation. NIV 30 For as Jonah was a sign to the Ninevites, so also will the Son of Man be to this generation. BBE 31 The queen of the South will come up on the day of judging and give her decision against the men of this generation: for she came from the ends of the earth to give ear to the wisdom of Solomon; and now something greater than Solomon is here. NIV 31 The Queen of the South will rise at the judgment with the men of this generation and condemn them; for she came from the ends of the earth to listen to Solomon's wisdom, and now one greater than Solomon is here. BBE 32 The men of Nineveh will come up in the day of judging and give their decision against this generation: for they were turned away from their sins at the preaching of Jonah; but now something greater than Jonah is here. NIV 32 The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and now one greater than Jonah is here. BBE 33 No man, when the light has been lighted, puts it in a secret place, or under a vessel, but on its table, so that those who come in may see the light. NIV 33 "No one lights a lamp and puts it in a place where it will be hidden, or under a bowl. Instead he puts it on its stand, so that those who come in may see the light. BBE 34 The light of the body is the eye: when your eye is true, all your body is full of light; but when it is evil, your body is dark. NIV 34 Your eye is the lamp of your body. When your eyes are good, your whole body also is full of light. But when they are bad, your body also is full of darkness. BBE 35 So take care that the light which is in you is not dark. NIV 35 See to it, then, that the light within you is not darkness. BBE 36 If, then, all your body is light, with no part of it dark, it will be completely full of light, as when a flame with its bright shining gives you light. NIV 36 Therefore, if your whole body is full of light, and no part of it dark, it will be completely lighted, as when the light of a lamp shines on you." BBE 37 Now, while he was talking, a Pharisee made a request that he would come to a meal with him; and he went in and took his seat at the meal. NIV 37 When Jesus had finished speaking, a Pharisee invited him to eat with him; so he went in and reclined at the table. BBE 38 And when the Pharisee saw it, he was surprised because he came to the meal without first washing himself. NIV 38 But the Pharisee, noticing that Jesus did not first wash before the meal, was surprised. BBE 39 And the Lord said to him, You Pharisees make the outside of the cup and the plate clean; but inside you are thieves and full of evil. NIV 39 Then the Lord said to him, "Now then, you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside you are full of greed and wickedness. BBE 40 O you foolish ones! did not he who made the outside in the same way make the inside? NIV 40 You foolish people! Did not the one who made the outside make the inside also? BBE 41 But if you give to the poor such things as you are able, then all things are clean to you. NIV 41 But give what is inside [the dish] to the poor, and everything will be clean for you. BBE 42 But a curse is on you, Pharisees! for you make men give a tenth of every sort of plant, and give no thought to right and the love of God; but it is right for you to do these things, and not let the others be undone. NIV 42 "Woe to you Pharisees, because you give God a tenth of your mint, rue and all other kinds of garden herbs, but you neglect justice and the love of God. You should have practiced the latter without leaving the former undone. BBE 43 A curse is on you, Pharisees! for your desires are for the most important seats in the Synagogues and for words of respect said to you in the market-place. NIV 43 "Woe to you Pharisees, because you love the most important seats in the synagogues and greetings in the marketplaces. BBE 44 A curse is on you! for you are like the resting-places of dead men, which are not seen, and men go walking over them without knowledge of it. NIV 44 "Woe to you, because you are like unmarked graves, which men walk over without knowing it." BBE 45 And one of the teachers of the law, answering, said to him, Master, in saying this, you give a bad name to us as to them. NIV 45 One of the experts in the law answered him, "Teacher, when you say these things, you insult us also." BBE 46 And he said, A curse is on you, teachers of the law! for while other men are crushed under the weight of the rules you make for them, you yourselves do not put so much as one finger to them. NIV 46 Jesus replied, "And you experts in the law, woe to you, because you load people down with burdens they can hardly carry, and you yourselves will not lift one finger to help them. BBE 47 A curse is on you! for you make resting-places for the bodies of the prophets, but your fathers put them to death. NIV 47 "Woe to you, because you build tombs for the prophets, and it was your forefathers who killed them. BBE 48 So you are witnesses and give approval to the work of your fathers; for they put them to death and you make their last resting-places. NIV 48 So you testify that you approve of what your forefathers did; they killed the prophets, and you build their tombs. BBE 49 For this reason the wisdom of God has said, I will send them prophets and teachers, and to some of them they will give death and cruel pains; NIV 49 Because of this, God in his wisdom said, 'I will send them prophets and apostles, some of whom they will kill and others they will persecute.' BBE 50 So that punishment may come on this generation for the blood of all the prophets which was given from the earliest days; NIV 50 Therefore this generation will be held responsible for the blood of all the prophets that has been shed since the beginning of the world, BBE 51 From the blood of Abel to the blood of Zachariah, who was put to death between the altar and the Temple. Yes, I say to you, It will come on this generation. NIV 51 from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who was killed between the altar and the sanctuary. Yes, I tell you, this generation will be held responsible for it all. BBE 52 A curse is on you, teachers of the law! for you have taken away the key of knowledge: you did not go in yourselves, and you got in the way of those who were going in. NIV 52 "Woe to you experts in the law, because you have taken away the key to knowledge. You yourselves have not entered, and you have hindered those who were entering." BBE 53 And when he had come out of that place, the scribes and the Pharisees came round him angrily, questioning him about more things; NIV 53 When Jesus left there, the Pharisees and the teachers of the law began to oppose him fiercely and to besiege him with questions, BBE 54 And watching him, for a chance to get something from his words which might be used against him. NIV 54 waiting to catch him in something he might say.
