RSV 3 Give us each day our daily bread; NIV 3 Give us each day our daily bread. RSV 4 and forgive us our sins, for we ourselves forgive every one who is indebted to us; and lead us not into temptation." NIV 4 Forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who sins against us. And lead us not into temptation. ' " RSV 5 And he said to them, "Which of you who has a friend will go to him at midnight and say to him, 'Friend, lend me three loaves; NIV 5 Then he said to them, "Suppose one of you has a friend, and he goes to him at midnight and says, 'Friend, lend me three loaves of bread, RSV 6 for a friend of mine has arrived on a journey, and I have nothing to set before him'; NIV 6 because a friend of mine on a journey has come to me, and I have nothing to set before him.' RSV 7 and he will answer from within, 'Do not bother me; the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed; I cannot get up and give you anything'? NIV 7 "Then the one inside answers, 'Don't bother me. The door is already locked, and my children are with me in bed. I can't get up and give you anything.' RSV 8 I tell you, though he will not get up and give him anything because he is his friend, yet because of his importunity he will rise and give him whatever he needs. NIV 8 I tell you, though he will not get up and give him the bread because he is his friend, yet because of the man's boldness he will get up and give him as much as he needs. RSV 9 And I tell you, Ask, and it will be given you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. NIV 9 "So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. RSV 11 What father among you, if his son asks for a fish, will instead of a fish give him a serpent; NIV 11 "Which of you fathers, if your son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead? RSV 12 or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? NIV 12 Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? RSV 13 If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!" NIV 13 If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!" RSV 14 Now he was casting out a demon that was dumb; when the demon had gone out, the dumb man spoke, and the people marveled. NIV 14 Jesus was driving out a demon that was mute. When the demon left, the man who had been mute spoke, and the crowd was amazed. RSV 15 But some of them said, "He casts out demons by Be-el'zebul, the prince of demons"; NIV 15 But some of them said, "By Beelzebub, the prince of demons, he is driving out demons." RSV 16 while others, to test him, sought from him a sign from heaven. NIV 16 Others tested him by asking for a sign from heaven. RSV 17 But he, knowing their thoughts, said to them, "Every kingdom divided against itself is laid waste, and a divided household falls. NIV 17 Jesus knew their thoughts and said to them: "Any kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and a house divided against itself will fall. RSV 18 And if Satan also is divided against himself, how will his kingdom stand? For you say that I cast out demons by Be-el'zebul. NIV 18 If Satan is divided against himself, how can his kingdom stand? I say this because you claim that I drive out demons by Beelzebub. RSV 19 And if I cast out demons by Be-el'zebul, by whom do your sons cast them out? Therefore they shall be your judges. NIV 19 Now if I drive out demons by Beelzebub, by whom do your followers drive them out? So then, they will be your judges. RSV 20 But if it is by the finger of God that I cast out demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you. NIV 20 But if I drive out demons by the finger of God, then the kingdom of God has come to you. RSV 21 When a strong man, fully armed, guards his own palace, his goods are in peace; NIV 21 "When a strong man, fully armed, guards his own house, his possessions are safe. NIV 22 But when someone stronger attacks and overpowers him, he takes away the armor in which the man trusted and divides up the spoils. RSV 23 He who is not with me is against me, and he who does not gather with me scatters. NIV 23 "He who is not with me is against me, and he who does not gather with me, scatters. NIV 26 Then it goes and takes seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. And the final condition of that man is worse than the first." RSV 27 As he said this, a woman in the crowd raised her voice and said to him, "Blessed is the womb that bore you, and the breasts that you sucked!" NIV 27 As Jesus was saying these things, a woman in the crowd called out, "Blessed is the mother who gave you birth and nursed you." RSV 28 But he said, "Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it!" NIV 28 He replied, "Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it." RSV 29 When the crowds were increasing, he began to say, "This generation is an evil generation; it seeks a sign, but no sign shall be given to it except the sign of Jonah. NIV 29 As the crowds increased, Jesus said, "This is a wicked generation. It asks for a miraculous sign, but none will be given it except the sign of Jonah. RSV 30 For as Jonah became a sign to the men of Nin'eveh, so will the Son of man be to this generation. NIV 30 For as Jonah was a sign to the Ninevites, so also will the Son of Man be to this generation. NIV 33 "No one lights a lamp and puts it in a place where it will be hidden, or under a bowl. Instead he puts it on its stand, so that those who come in may see the light. RSV 34 Your eye is the lamp of your body; when your eye is sound, your whole body is full of light; but when it is not sound, your body is full of darkness. NIV 34 Your eye is the lamp of your body. When your eyes are good, your whole body also is full of light. But when they are bad, your body also is full of darkness. RSV 35 Therefore be careful lest the light in you be darkness. NIV 35 See to it, then, that the light within you is not darkness. RSV 36 If then your whole body is full of light, having no part dark, it will be wholly bright, as when a lamp with its rays gives you light." NIV 36 Therefore, if your whole body is full of light, and no part of it dark, it will be completely lighted, as when the light of a lamp shines on you." NIV 45 One of the experts in the law answered him, "Teacher, when you say these things, you insult us also." RSV 46 And he said, "Woe to you lawyers also! for you load men with burdens hard to bear, and you yourselves do not touch the burdens with one of your fingers. RSV 47 Woe to you! for you build the tombs of the prophets whom your fathers killed. NIV 47 "Woe to you, because you build tombs for the prophets, and it was your forefathers who killed them. RSV 48 So you are witnesses and consent to the deeds of your fathers; for they killed them, and you build their tombs. NIV 48 So you testify that you approve of what your forefathers did; they killed the prophets, and you build their tombs. RSV 49 Therefore also the Wisdom of God said, 'I will send them prophets and apostles, some of whom they will kill and persecute,' NIV 49 Because of this, God in his wisdom said, 'I will send them prophets and apostles, some of whom they will kill and others they will persecute.'
