Luke 12

HNV 1 Meanwhile, when a multitude of many thousands had gathered together, so much so that they trampled on each other, he began to tell his talmidim first of all, "Beware of the yeast of the Perushim, which is hypocrisy. NIV 1 Meanwhile, when a crowd of many thousands had gathered, so that they were trampling on one another, Jesus began to speak first to his disciples, saying: "Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy. HNV 2 But there is nothing covered up, that will not be revealed, nor hidden, that will not be known. NIV 2 There is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known. HNV 3 Therefore whatever you have said in the darkness will be heard in the light. What you have spoken in the ear in the inner chambers will be proclaimed on the housetops. NIV 3 What you have said in the dark will be heard in the daylight, and what you have whispered in the ear in the inner rooms will be proclaimed from the roofs. HNV 4 "I tell you, my friends, don't be afraid of those who kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do. NIV 4 "I tell you, my friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body and after that can do no more. HNV 5 But I will warn you whom you shall fear. Fear him, who after he has killed, has power to cast into Gehinnom. Yes, I tell you, fear him. NIV 5 But I will show you whom you should fear: Fear him who, after the killing of the body, has power to throw you into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him. HNV 6 "Aren't five sparrows sold for two assaria? Not one of them is forgotten by God. NIV 6 Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies ? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God. HNV 7 But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Therefore don't be afraid. You are of more value than many sparrows. NIV 7 Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don't be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows. HNV 8 "I tell you, everyone who confesses me before men, him will the Son of Man also confess before the angels of God; NIV 8 "I tell you, whoever acknowledges me before men, the Son of Man will also acknowledge him before the angels of God. HNV 9 but he who denies me in the presence of men will be denied in the presence of the angels of God. NIV 9 But he who disowns me before men will be disowned before the angels of God. HNV 10 Everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but those who blaspheme against the Ruach HaKodesh will not be forgiven. NIV 10 And everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven. HNV 11 When they bring you before the synagogues, the rulers, and the authorities, don't be anxious how or what you will answer, or what you will say; NIV 11 "When you are brought before synagogues, rulers and authorities, do not worry about how you will defend yourselves or what you will say, HNV 12 for the Ruach HaKodesh will teach you in that same hour what you must say." NIV 12 for the Holy Spirit will teach you at that time what you should say." HNV 13 One of the multitude said to him, "Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me." NIV 13 Someone in the crowd said to him, "Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me." HNV 14 But he said to him, "Man, who made me a judge or an arbitrator over you?" NIV 14 Jesus replied, "Man, who appointed me a judge or an arbiter between you?" HNV 15 He said to them, "Beware! Keep yourselves from covetousness, for a man's life doesn't consist of the abundance of the things which he possesses." NIV 15 Then he said to them, "Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; a man's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions." HNV 16 He spoke a parable to them, saying, "The ground of a certain rich man brought forth abundantly. NIV 16 And he told them this parable: "The ground of a certain rich man produced a good crop. HNV 17 He reasoned within himself, saying, 'What will I do, because I don't have room to store my crops?' NIV 17 He thought to himself, 'What shall I do? I have no place to store my crops.' HNV 18 He said, 'This is what I will do. I will pull down my barns, and build bigger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. NIV 18 "Then he said, 'This is what I'll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. HNV 19 I will tell my soul, "Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years. Take your ease, eat, drink, be merry."' NIV 19 And I'll say to myself, "You have plenty of good things laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry." ' HNV 20 "But God said to him, 'You foolish one, tonight your soul is required of you. The things which you have prepared -- whose will they be?' NIV 20 "But God said to him, 'You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself ?' HNV 21 So is he who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God." NIV 21 "This is how it will be with anyone who stores up things for himself but is not rich toward God." HNV 22 He said to his talmidim, "Therefore I tell you, don't be anxious for your life, what you will eat, nor yet for your body, what you will wear. NIV 22 Then Jesus said to his disciples: "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear. HNV 23 Life is more than food, and the body than clothing. NIV 23 Life is more than food, and the body more than clothes. HNV 24 Consider the ravens: they don't sow, they don't reap, they have no warehouse or barn, and God feeds them. How much more valuable are you than birds! NIV 24 Consider the ravens: They do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn; yet God feeds them. And how much more valuable you are than birds! HNV 25 Which of you by being anxious can add a cubit to his height? NIV 25 Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life ? HNV 26 If then you aren't able to do even the least things, why are you anxious about the rest? NIV 26 Since you cannot do this very little thing, why do you worry about the rest? HNV 27 Consider the lilies, how they grow. They don't toil, neither do they spin; yet I tell you, even Shlomo in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. NIV 27 "Consider how the lilies grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. HNV 28 But if this is how God clothes the grass in the field, which today exists, and tomorrow is cast into the oven, how much more will he clothe you, ones of little faith? NIV 28 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today, and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, how much more will he clothe you, O you of little faith! HNV 29 Don't seek what you will eat or what you will drink; neither be anxious. NIV 29 And do not set your heart on what you will eat or drink; do not worry about it. HNV 30 For the nations of the world seek after all of these things, but your Father knows that you need these things. NIV 30 For the pagan world runs after all such things, and your Father knows that you need them. HNV 31 Yet seek God's kingdom, and all these things will be added to you. NIV 31 But seek his kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well. HNV 32 Don't be afraid, little flock, for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom. NIV 32 "Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom. HNV 33 Sell that which you have, and give gifts to the needy. Make for yourselves purses which don't grow old, a treasure in the heavens that doesn't fail, where no thief approaches, neither moth destroys. NIV 33 Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven that will not be exhausted, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys. HNV 34 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. NIV 34 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. HNV 35 "Let your loins be girded and your lamps burning. NIV 35 "Be dressed ready for service and keep your lamps burning, HNV 36 Be like men looking for their lord, when he will return from the marriage feast; that, when he comes and knocks, they may immediately open to him. NIV 36 like men waiting for their master to return from a wedding banquet, so that when he comes and knocks they can immediately open the door for him. HNV 37 Blessed are those servants, whom the lord will find watching when he comes. Most assuredly I tell you, that he will dress himself, and make them recline, and will come and serve them. NIV 37 It will be good for those servants whose master finds them watching when he comes. I tell you the truth, he will dress himself to serve, will have them recline at the table and will come and wait on them. HNV 38 They will be blessed if he comes in the second or third watch, and finds them so. NIV 38 It will be good for those servants whose master finds them ready, even if he comes in the second or third watch of the night. HNV 39 But know this, that if the master of the house had known in what hour the thief was coming, he would have watched, and not allowed his house to be broken into. NIV 39 But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into. HNV 40 Therefore be ready also, for the Son of Man is coming in an hour that you don't expect him." NIV 40 You also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him." HNV 41 Kefa said to him, "Lord, are you telling this parable to us, or to everybody?" NIV 41 Peter asked, "Lord, are you telling this parable to us, or to everyone?" HNV 42 The Lord said, "Who then is the faithful and wise steward, whom his lord will set over his household, to give them their portion of food at the right times? NIV 42 The Lord answered, "Who then is the faithful and wise manager, whom the master puts in charge of his servants to give them their food allowance at the proper time? HNV 43 Blessed is that servant whom his lord will find doing so when he comes. NIV 43 It will be good for that servant whom the master finds doing so when he returns. HNV 44 Truly I tell you, that he will set him over all that he has. NIV 44 I tell you the truth, he will put him in charge of all his possessions. HNV 45 But if that servant says in his heart, 'My lord delays his coming,' and begins to beat the menservants and the maidservants, and to eat and drink, and to be drunken, NIV 45 But suppose the servant says to himself, 'My master is taking a long time in coming,' and he then begins to beat the menservants and maidservants and to eat and drink and get drunk. HNV 46 then the lord of that servant will come in a day when he isn't expecting him, and in an hour that he doesn't know, and will cut him apart, and place his portion with the unfaithful. NIV 46 The master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he is not aware of. He will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the unbelievers. HNV 47 That servant, who knew his lord's will, and didn't prepare, nor do what he wanted, will be beaten with many stripes, NIV 47 "That servant who knows his master's will and does not get ready or does not do what his master wants will be beaten with many blows. HNV 48 but he who didn't know, and did things worthy of stripes, will be beaten with few stripes. To whoever much is given, of him will much be required; and to whom they deposit much, of him will they ask more. NIV 48 But the one who does not know and does things deserving punishment will be beaten with few blows. From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked. HNV 49 "I came to throw fire on the eretz. I wish it were already kindled. NIV 49 "I have come to bring fire on the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled! HNV 50 But I have a immersion to be immersed with, and how distressed I am until it is accomplished! NIV 50 But I have a baptism to undergo, and how distressed I am until it is completed! HNV 51 Do you think that I have come to give shalom in the eretz? I tell you, no, but rather division. NIV 51 Do you think I came to bring peace on earth? No, I tell you, but division. HNV 52 For from now on, there will be five in one house divided, three against two, and two against three. NIV 52 From now on there will be five in one family divided against each other, three against two and two against three. HNV 53 They will be divided, father against son, and son against father; mother against daughter, and daughter against her mother; mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law, and daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law." NIV 53 They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law." HNV 54 He said to the multitudes also, "When you see a cloud rising from the west, immediately you say, 'A shower is coming,' and so it happens. NIV 54 He said to the crowd: "When you see a cloud rising in the west, immediately you say, 'It's going to rain,' and it does. HNV 55 When a south wind blows, you say, 'There will be a scorching heat,' and it happens. NIV 55 And when the south wind blows, you say, 'It's going to be hot,' and it is. HNV 56 You hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of the eretz and the sky, but how is it that you don't interpret this time? NIV 56 Hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of the earth and the sky. How is it that you don't know how to interpret this present time? HNV 57 Why don't you judge for yourselves what is right? NIV 57 "Why don't you judge for yourselves what is right? HNV 58 For as you are going with your adversary before the magistrate, try diligently on the way to be freed from him, lest perhaps he drag you to the judge, and the judge deliver you to the officer, and the officer throw you into prison. NIV 58 As you are going with your adversary to the magistrate, try hard to be reconciled to him on the way, or he may drag you off to the judge, and the judge turn you over to the officer, and the officer throw you into prison. HNV 59 I tell you, you will by no means get out of there, until you have paid the very last peruta." NIV 59 I tell you, you will not get out until you have paid the last penny. "
