CSB 1 All the tax collectors and sinners were approaching to listen to Him. NIV 1 Now the tax collectors and "sinners" were all gathering around to hear him. CSB 2 And the Pharisees and scribes were complaining, "This man welcomes sinners and eats with them!" NIV 2 But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law muttered, "This man welcomes sinners and eats with them." CSB 3 So He told them this parable: NIV 3 Then Jesus told them this parable: CSB 4 "What man among you, who has 100 sheep and loses one of them, does not leave the 99 in the open field and go after the lost one until he finds it? NIV 4 "Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Does he not leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it? CSB 5 When he has found it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders, NIV 5 And when he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders CSB 6 and coming home, he calls his friends and neighbors together, saying to them, 'Rejoice with me, because I have found my lost sheep!' NIV 6 and goes home. Then he calls his friends and neighbors together and says, 'Rejoice with me; I have found my lost sheep.' CSB 7 I tell you, in the same way, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over 99 righteous people who don't need repentance. NIV 7 I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent. CSB 8 "Or what woman who has 10 silver coins, if she loses one coin, does not light a lamp, sweep the house, and search carefully until she finds it? NIV 8 "Or suppose a woman has ten silver coins and loses one. Does she not light a lamp, sweep the house and search carefully until she finds it? CSB 9 When she finds it, she calls her women friends and neighbors together, saying, 'Rejoice with me, because I have found the silver coin I lost!' NIV 9 And when she finds it, she calls her friends and neighbors together and says, 'Rejoice with me; I have found my lost coin.' CSB 10 I tell you, in the same way, there is joy in the presence of God's angels over one sinner who repents." NIV 10 In the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents." CSB 11 He also said: "A man had two sons. NIV 11 Jesus continued: "There was a man who had two sons. CSB 12 The younger of them said to his father, 'Father, give me the share of the estate I have coming to me.' So he distributed the assets to them. NIV 12 The younger one said to his father, 'Father, give me my share of the estate.' So he divided his property between them. CSB 13 Not many days later, the younger son gathered together all he had and traveled to a distant country, where he squandered his estate in foolish living. NIV 13 "Not long after that, the younger son got together all he had, set off for a distant country and there squandered his wealth in wild living. CSB 14 After he had spent everything, a severe famine struck that country, and he had nothing. NIV 14 After he had spent everything, there was a severe famine in that whole country, and he began to be in need. CSB 15 Then he went to work for one of the citizens of that country, who sent him into his fields to feed pigs. NIV 15 So he went and hired himself out to a citizen of that country, who sent him to his fields to feed pigs. CSB 16 He longed to eat his fill from the carob pods the pigs were eating, but no one would give him any. NIV 16 He longed to fill his stomach with the pods that the pigs were eating, but no one gave him anything. CSB 17 When he came to his senses, he said, 'How many of my father's hired hands have more than enough food, and here I am dying of hunger! NIV 17 "When he came to his senses, he said, 'How many of my father's hired men have food to spare, and here I am starving to death! CSB 18 I'll get up, go to my father, and say to him, Father, I have sinned against heaven and in your sight. NIV 18 I will set out and go back to my father and say to him: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. CSB 19 I'm no longer worthy to be called your son. Make me like one of your hired hands.' NIV 19 I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me like one of your hired men.' CSB 20 So he got up and went to his father. But while the son was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion. He ran, threw his arms around his neck, and kissed him. NIV 20 So he got up and went to his father. "But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him. CSB 21 The son said to him, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven and in your sight. I'm no longer worthy to be called your son.' NIV 21 "The son said to him, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son. ' CSB 22 "But the father told his slaves, 'Quick! Bring out the best robe and put it on him; put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. NIV 22 "But the father said to his servants, 'Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. CSB 23 Then bring the fattened calf and slaughter it, and let's celebrate with a feast, NIV 23 Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let's have a feast and celebrate. CSB 24 because this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found!' So they began to celebrate. NIV 24 For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.' So they began to celebrate. CSB 25 "Now his older son was in the field; as he came near the house, he heard music and dancing. NIV 25 "Meanwhile, the older son was in the field. When he came near the house, he heard music and dancing. CSB 26 So he summoned one of the servants and asked what these things meant. NIV 26 So he called one of the servants and asked him what was going on. CSB 27 'Your brother is here,' he told him, 'and your father has slaughtered the fattened calf because he has him back safe and sound.' NIV 27 'Your brother has come,' he replied, 'and your father has killed the fattened calf because he has him back safe and sound.' CSB 28 "Then he became angry and didn't want to go in. So his father came out and pleaded with him. NIV 28 "The older brother became angry and refused to go in. So his father went out and pleaded with him. CSB 29 But he replied to his father, 'Look, I have been slaving many years for you, and I have never disobeyed your orders, yet you never gave me a young goat so I could celebrate with my friends. NIV 29 But he answered his father, 'Look! All these years I've been slaving for you and never disobeyed your orders. Yet you never gave me even a young goat so I could celebrate with my friends. CSB 30 But when this son of yours came, who has devoured your assets with prostitutes, you slaughtered the fattened calf for him.' NIV 30 But when this son of yours who has squandered your property with prostitutes comes home, you kill the fattened calf for him!' CSB 31 " 'Son,' he said to him, 'you are always with me, and everything I have is yours. NIV 31 " 'My son,' the father said, 'you are always with me, and everything I have is yours. CSB 32 But we had to celebrate and rejoice, because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.' " NIV 32 But we had to celebrate and be glad, because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.' "
