Luke 19:11-27

NRS 11 As they were listening to this, he went on to tell a parable, because he was near Jerusalem, and because they supposed that the kingdom of God was to appear immediately. NIV 11 While they were listening to this, he went on to tell them a parable, because he was near Jerusalem and the people thought that the kingdom of God was going to appear at once. NRS 12 So he said, "A nobleman went to a distant country to get royal power for himself and then return. NIV 12 He said: "A man of noble birth went to a distant country to have himself appointed king and then to return. NRS 13 He summoned ten of his slaves, and gave them ten pounds, and said to them, "Do business with these until I come back.' NIV 13 So he called ten of his servants and gave them ten minas. 'Put this money to work,' he said, 'until I come back.' NRS 14 But the citizens of his country hated him and sent a delegation after him, saying, "We do not want this man to rule over us.' NIV 14 "But his subjects hated him and sent a delegation after him to say, 'We don't want this man to be our king.' NRS 15 When he returned, having received royal power, he ordered these slaves, to whom he had given the money, to be summoned so that he might find out what they had gained by trading. NIV 15 "He was made king, however, and returned home. Then he sent for the servants to whom he had given the money, in order to find out what they had gained with it. NRS 16 The first came forward and said, "Lord, your pound has made ten more pounds.' NIV 16 "The first one came and said, 'Sir, your mina has earned ten more.' NRS 17 He said to him, "Well done, good slave! Because you have been trustworthy in a very small thing, take charge of ten cities.' NIV 17 " 'Well done, my good servant!' his master replied. 'Because you have been trustworthy in a very small matter, take charge of ten cities.' NRS 18 Then the second came, saying, "Lord, your pound has made five pounds.' NIV 18 "The second came and said, 'Sir, your mina has earned five more.' NRS 19 He said to him, "And you, rule over five cities.' NIV 19 "His master answered, 'You take charge of five cities.' NRS 20 Then the other came, saying, "Lord, here is your pound. I wrapped it up in a piece of cloth, NIV 20 "Then another servant came and said, 'Sir, here is your mina; I have kept it laid away in a piece of cloth. NRS 21 for I was afraid of you, because you are a harsh man; you take what you did not deposit, and reap what you did not sow.' NIV 21 I was afraid of you, because you are a hard man. You take out what you did not put in and reap what you did not sow.' NRS 22 He said to him, "I will judge you by your own words, you wicked slave! You knew, did you, that I was a harsh man, taking what I did not deposit and reaping what I did not sow? NIV 22 "His master replied, 'I will judge you by your own words, you wicked servant! You knew, did you, that I am a hard man, taking out what I did not put in, and reaping what I did not sow? NRS 23 Why then did you not put my money into the bank? Then when I returned, I could have collected it with interest.' NIV 23 Why then didn't you put my money on deposit, so that when I came back, I could have collected it with interest?' NRS 24 He said to the bystanders, "Take the pound from him and give it to the one who has ten pounds.' NIV 24 "Then he said to those standing by, 'Take his mina away from him and give it to the one who has ten minas.' NRS 25 (And they said to him, "Lord, he has ten pounds!') NIV 25 " 'Sir,' they said, 'he already has ten!' NRS 26 "I tell you, to all those who have, more will be given; but from those who have nothing, even what they have will be taken away. NIV 26 "He replied, 'I tell you that to everyone who has, more will be given, but as for the one who has nothing, even what he has will be taken away. NRS 27 But as for these enemies of mine who did not want me to be king over them—bring them here and slaughter them in my presence.' " NIV 27 But those enemies of mine who did not want me to be king over them--bring them here and kill them in front of me.' "
