Luke 1:5-25

CEB 5 During the rule of King Herod of Judea there was a priest named Zechariah who belonged to the priestly division of Abijah. His wife Elizabeth was a descendant of Aaron. NIV 5 In the time of Herod king of Judea there was a priest named Zechariah, who belonged to the priestly division of Abijah; his wife Elizabeth was also a descendant of Aaron. CEB 6 They were both righteous before God, blameless in their observance of all the Lord's commandments and regulations. NIV 6 Both of them were upright in the sight of God, observing all the Lord's commandments and regulations blamelessly. CEB 7 They had no children because Elizabeth was unable to become pregnant and they both were very old. NIV 7 But they had no children, because Elizabeth was barren; and they were both well along in years. CEB 8 One day Zechariah was serving as a priest before God because his priestly division was on duty. NIV 8 Once when Zechariah's division was on duty and he was serving as priest before God, CEB 9 Following the customs of priestly service, he was chosen by lottery to go into the Lord's sanctuary and burn incense. NIV 9 he was chosen by lot, according to the custom of the priesthood, to go into the temple of the Lord and burn incense. CEB 10 All the people who gathered to worship were praying outside during this hour of incense offering. NIV 10 And when the time for the burning of incense came, all the assembled worshipers were praying outside. CEB 11 An angel from the Lord appeared to him, standing to the right of the altar of incense. NIV 11 Then an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing at the right side of the altar of incense. CEB 12 When Zechariah saw the angel, he was startled and overcome with fear. NIV 12 When Zechariah saw him, he was startled and was gripped with fear. CEB 13 The angel said, "Don't be afraid, Zechariah. Your prayers have been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will give birth to your son and you must name him John. NIV 13 But the angel said to him: "Do not be afraid, Zechariah; your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to give him the name John. CEB 14 He will be a joy and delight to you, and many people will rejoice at his birth, NIV 14 He will be a joy and delight to you, and many will rejoice because of his birth, CEB 15 for he will be great in the Lord's eyes. He must not drink wine and liquor. He will be filled with the Holy Spirit even before his birth. NIV 15 for he will be great in the sight of the Lord. He is never to take wine or other fermented drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit even from birth. CEB 16 He will bring many Israelites back to the Lord their God. NIV 16 Many of the people of Israel will he bring back to the Lord their God. CEB 17 He will go forth before the Lord, equipped with the spirit and power of Elijah. He will turn the hearts of fathers back to their children, and he will turn the disobedient to righteous patterns of thinking. He will make ready a people prepared for the Lord." NIV 17 And he will go on before the Lord, in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous--to make ready a people prepared for the Lord." CEB 18 Zechariah said to the angel, "How can I be sure of this? My wife and I are very old." NIV 18 Zechariah asked the angel, "How can I be sure of this? I am an old man and my wife is well along in years." CEB 19 The angel replied, "I am Gabriel. I stand in God's presence. I was sent to speak to you and to bring this good news to you. NIV 19 The angel answered, "I am Gabriel. I stand in the presence of God, and I have been sent to speak to you and to tell you this good news. CEB 20 Know this: What I have spoken will come true at the proper time. But because you didn't believe, you will remain silent, unable to speak until the day when these things happen." NIV 20 And now you will be silent and not able to speak until the day this happens, because you did not believe my words, which will come true at their proper time." CEB 21 Meanwhile, the people were waiting for Zechariah, and they wondered why he was in the sanctuary for such a long time. She kept to herself for five months, saying, NIV 24 After this his wife Elizabeth became pregnant and for five months remained in seclusion. CEB 25 "This is the Lord's doing. He has shown his favor to me by removing my disgrace among other people." NIV 25 "The Lord has done this for me," she said. "In these days he has shown his favor and taken away my disgrace among the people."
