Luke 21

DBY 1 And he looked up and saw the rich casting their gifts into the treasury; NIV 1 As he looked up, Jesus saw the rich putting their gifts into the temple treasury. DBY 2 but he saw also a certain poor widow casting therein two mites. NIV 2 He also saw a poor widow put in two very small copper coins. DBY 3 And he said, Verily I say unto you, that this poor widow has cast in more than all; NIV 3 "I tell you the truth," he said, "this poor widow has put in more than all the others. DBY 4 for all these out of their abundance have cast into the gifts [of God]; but she out of her need has cast in all the living which she had. NIV 4 All these people gave their gifts out of their wealth; but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on." DBY 5 And as some spoke of the temple, that it was adorned with goodly stones and consecrated offerings, he said, NIV 5 Some of his disciples were remarking about how the temple was adorned with beautiful stones and with gifts dedicated to God. But Jesus said, DBY 6 [As to] these things which ye are beholding, days are coming in which there shall not be left stone upon stone which shall not be thrown down. NIV 6 "As for what you see here, the time will come when not one stone will be left on another; every one of them will be thrown down." DBY 7 And they asked him saying, Teacher, when then shall these things be; and what [is] the sign when these things are going to take place? NIV 7 "Teacher," they asked, "when will these things happen? And what will be the sign that they are about to take place?" DBY 8 And he said, See that ye be not led astray, for many shall come in my name, saying, *I* am [he], and the time is drawn nigh: go ye not [therefore] after them. NIV 8 He replied: "Watch out that you are not deceived. For many will come in my name, claiming, 'I am he,' and, 'The time is near.' Do not follow them. DBY 9 And when ye shall hear of wars and tumults, be not terrified, for these things must first take place, but the end is not immediately. NIV 9 When you hear of wars and revolutions, do not be frightened. These things must happen first, but the end will not come right away." DBY 10 Then he said to them, Nation shall rise up against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; NIV 10 Then he said to them: "Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. DBY 11 there shall be both great earthquakes in different places, and famines and pestilences; and there shall be fearful sights and great signs from heaven. NIV 11 There will be great earthquakes, famines and pestilences in various places, and fearful events and great signs from heaven. DBY 12 But before all these things they shall lay their hands upon you and persecute you, delivering [you] up to synagogues and prisons, bringing [you] before kings and governors on account of my name; NIV 12 "But before all this, they will lay hands on you and persecute you. They will deliver you to synagogues and prisons, and you will be brought before kings and governors, and all on account of my name. DBY 13 but it shall turn out to you for a testimony. NIV 13 This will result in your being witnesses to them. DBY 14 Settle therefore in your hearts not to meditate beforehand [your] defence, NIV 14 But make up your mind not to worry beforehand how you will defend yourselves. DBY 15 for *I* will give you a mouth and wisdom which all your opposers shall not be able to reply to or resist. NIV 15 For I will give you words and wisdom that none of your adversaries will be able to resist or contradict. DBY 16 But ye will be delivered up even by parents and brethren and relations and friends, and they shall put to death [some] from among you, NIV 16 You will be betrayed even by parents, brothers, relatives and friends, and they will put some of you to death. DBY 17 and ye will be hated of all for my name's sake. NIV 17 All men will hate you because of me. DBY 18 And a hair of your head shall in no wise perish. NIV 18 But not a hair of your head will perish. DBY 19 By your patient endurance gain your souls. NIV 19 By standing firm you will gain life. DBY 20 But when ye see Jerusalem encompassed with armies, then know that its desolation is drawn nigh. NIV 20 "When you see Jerusalem being surrounded by armies, you will know that its desolation is near. DBY 21 Then let those who are in Judaea flee to the mountains, and those who are in the midst of it depart out, and those who are in the country not enter into it; NIV 21 Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, let those in the city get out, and let those in the country not enter the city. DBY 22 for these are days of avenging, that all the things that are written may be accomplished. NIV 22 For this is the time of punishment in fulfillment of all that has been written. DBY 23 But woe to them that are with child and to them who give suck in those days, for there shall be great distress upon the land and wrath upon this people. NIV 23 How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers! There will be great distress in the land and wrath against this people. DBY 24 And they shall fall by the edge of the sword, and be led captive into all the nations; and Jerusalem shall be trodden down of [the] nations until [the] times of [the] nations be fulfilled. NIV 24 They will fall by the sword and will be taken as prisoners to all the nations. Jerusalem will be trampled on by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled. DBY 25 And there shall be signs in sun and moon and stars, and upon the earth distress of nations in perplexity [at] the roar of the sea and rolling waves, NIV 25 "There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars. On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea. DBY 26 men ready to die through fear and expectation of what is coming on the habitable earth, for the powers of the heavens shall be shaken. NIV 26 Men will faint from terror, apprehensive of what is coming on the world, for the heavenly bodies will be shaken. DBY 27 And then shall they see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. NIV 27 At that time they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. DBY 28 But when these things begin to come to pass, look up and lift up your heads, because your redemption draws nigh. NIV 28 When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near." DBY 29 And he spoke a parable to them: Behold the fig-tree and all the trees; NIV 29 He told them this parable: "Look at the fig tree and all the trees. DBY 30 when they already sprout, ye know of your own selves, [on] looking [at them], that already the summer is near. NIV 30 When they sprout leaves, you can see for yourselves and know that summer is near. DBY 31 So also *ye*, when ye see these things take place, know that the kingdom of God is near. NIV 31 Even so, when you see these things happening, you know that the kingdom of God is near. DBY 32 Verily I say unto you, that this generation shall in no wise pass away until all come to pass. NIV 32 "I tell you the truth, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened. DBY 33 The heaven and the earth shall pass away, but my words shall in no wise pass away. NIV 33 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away. DBY 34 But take heed to yourselves lest possibly your hearts be laden with surfeiting and drinking and cares of life, and that day come upon you suddenly unawares; NIV 34 "Be careful, or your hearts will be weighed down with dissipation, drunkenness and the anxieties of life, and that day will close on you unexpectedly like a trap. DBY 35 for as a snare shall it come upon all them that dwell upon the face of the whole earth. NIV 35 For it will come upon all those who live on the face of the whole earth. DBY 36 Watch therefore, praying at every season, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things which are about to come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man. NIV 36 Be always on the watch, and pray that you may be able to escape all that is about to happen, and that you may be able to stand before the Son of Man." DBY 37 And by day he was teaching in the temple, and by night, going out, he remained abroad on the mountain called [the mount] of Olives; NIV 37 Each day Jesus was teaching at the temple, and each evening he went out to spend the night on the hill called the Mount of Olives, DBY 38 and all the people came early in the morning to him in the temple to hear him. NIV 38 and all the people came early in the morning to hear him at the temple.
