Luke 21

RSV 1 He looked up and saw the rich putting their gifts into the treasury; NIV 1 As he looked up, Jesus saw the rich putting their gifts into the temple treasury. RSV 2 and he saw a poor widow put in two copper coins. NIV 2 He also saw a poor widow put in two very small copper coins. RSV 3 And he said, "Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all of them; NIV 3 "I tell you the truth," he said, "this poor widow has put in more than all the others. RSV 4 for they all contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty put in all the living that she had." NIV 4 All these people gave their gifts out of their wealth; but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on." RSV 5 And as some spoke of the temple, how it was adorned with noble stones and offerings, he said, NIV 5 Some of his disciples were remarking about how the temple was adorned with beautiful stones and with gifts dedicated to God. But Jesus said, RSV 6 "As for these things which you see, the days will come when there shall not be left here one stone upon another that will not be thrown down." NIV 6 "As for what you see here, the time will come when not one stone will be left on another; every one of them will be thrown down." RSV 7 And they asked him, "Teacher, when will this be, and what will be the sign when this is about to take place?" NIV 7 "Teacher," they asked, "when will these things happen? And what will be the sign that they are about to take place?" RSV 8 And he said, "Take heed that you are not led astray; for many will come in my name, saying, 'I am he!' and, 'The time is at hand!' Do not go after them. NIV 8 He replied: "Watch out that you are not deceived. For many will come in my name, claiming, 'I am he,' and, 'The time is near.' Do not follow them. RSV 9 And when you hear of wars and tumults, do not be terrified; for this must first take place, but the end will not be at once." NIV 9 When you hear of wars and revolutions, do not be frightened. These things must happen first, but the end will not come right away." RSV 10 Then he said to them, "Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; NIV 10 Then he said to them: "Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. RSV 11 there will be great earthquakes, and in various places famines and pestilences; and there will be terrors and great signs from heaven. NIV 11 There will be great earthquakes, famines and pestilences in various places, and fearful events and great signs from heaven. RSV 12 But before all this they will lay their hands on you and persecute you, delivering you up to the synagogues and prisons, and you will be brought before kings and governors for my name's sake. NIV 12 "But before all this, they will lay hands on you and persecute you. They will deliver you to synagogues and prisons, and you will be brought before kings and governors, and all on account of my name. RSV 13 This will be a time for you to bear testimony. NIV 13 This will result in your being witnesses to them. RSV 14 Settle it therefore in your minds, not to meditate beforehand how to answer; NIV 14 But make up your mind not to worry beforehand how you will defend yourselves. RSV 15 for I will give you a mouth and wisdom, which none of your adversaries will be able to withstand or contradict. NIV 15 For I will give you words and wisdom that none of your adversaries will be able to resist or contradict. RSV 16 You will be delivered up even by parents and brothers and kinsmen and friends, and some of you they will put to death; NIV 16 You will be betrayed even by parents, brothers, relatives and friends, and they will put some of you to death. RSV 17 you will be hated by all for my name's sake. NIV 17 All men will hate you because of me. RSV 18 But not a hair of your head will perish. NIV 18 But not a hair of your head will perish. RSV 19 By your endurance you will gain your lives. NIV 19 By standing firm you will gain life. RSV 20 "But when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then know that its desolation has come near. NIV 20 "When you see Jerusalem being surrounded by armies, you will know that its desolation is near. RSV 21 Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, and let those who are inside the city depart, and let not those who are out in the country enter it; NIV 21 Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, let those in the city get out, and let those in the country not enter the city. RSV 22 for these are days of vengeance, to fulfil all that is written. NIV 22 For this is the time of punishment in fulfillment of all that has been written. RSV 23 Alas for those who are with child and for those who give suck in those days! For great distress shall be upon the earth and wrath upon this people; NIV 23 How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers! There will be great distress in the land and wrath against this people. RSV 24 they will fall by the edge of the sword, and be led captive among all nations; and Jerusalem will be trodden down by the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled. NIV 24 They will fall by the sword and will be taken as prisoners to all the nations. Jerusalem will be trampled on by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled. RSV 25 "And there will be signs in sun and moon and stars, and upon the earth distress of nations in perplexity at the roaring of the sea and the waves, NIV 25 "There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars. On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea. RSV 26 men fainting with fear and with foreboding of what is coming on the world; for the powers of the heavens will be shaken. NIV 26 Men will faint from terror, apprehensive of what is coming on the world, for the heavenly bodies will be shaken. RSV 27 And then they will see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. NIV 27 At that time they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. RSV 28 Now when these things begin to take place, look up and raise your heads, because your redemption is drawing near." NIV 28 When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near." RSV 29 And he told them a parable: "Look at the fig tree, and all the trees; NIV 29 He told them this parable: "Look at the fig tree and all the trees. RSV 30 as soon as they come out in leaf, you see for yourselves and know that the summer is already near. NIV 30 When they sprout leaves, you can see for yourselves and know that summer is near. RSV 31 So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that the kingdom of God is near. NIV 31 Even so, when you see these things happening, you know that the kingdom of God is near. RSV 32 Truly, I say to you, this generation will not pass away till all has taken place. NIV 32 "I tell you the truth, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened. RSV 33 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away. NIV 33 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away. RSV 34 "But take heed to yourselves lest your hearts be weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and cares of this life, and that day come upon you suddenly like a snare; NIV 34 "Be careful, or your hearts will be weighed down with dissipation, drunkenness and the anxieties of life, and that day will close on you unexpectedly like a trap. RSV 35 for it will come upon all who dwell upon the face of the whole earth. NIV 35 For it will come upon all those who live on the face of the whole earth. RSV 36 But watch at all times, praying that you may have strength to escape all these things that will take place, and to stand before the Son of man." NIV 36 Be always on the watch, and pray that you may be able to escape all that is about to happen, and that you may be able to stand before the Son of Man." RSV 37 And every day he was teaching in the temple, but at night he went out and lodged on the mount called Olivet. NIV 37 Each day Jesus was teaching at the temple, and each evening he went out to spend the night on the hill called the Mount of Olives, RSV 38 And early in the morning all the people came to him in the temple to hear him. NIV 38 and all the people came early in the morning to hear him at the temple.
