Luke 22

DBY 1 Now the feast of unleavened bread, which [is] called the passover, drew nigh, NIV 1 Now the Feast of Unleavened Bread, called the Passover, was approaching, DBY 2 and the chief priests and the scribes sought how they might kill him; for they feared the people. NIV 2 and the chief priests and the teachers of the law were looking for some way to get rid of Jesus, for they were afraid of the people. DBY 3 And Satan entered into Judas, who was surnamed Iscariote, being of the number of the twelve. NIV 3 Then Satan entered Judas, called Iscariot, one of the Twelve. DBY 4 And he went away and spoke with the chief priests and captains as to how he should deliver him up to them. NIV 4 And Judas went to the chief priests and the officers of the temple guard and discussed with them how he might betray Jesus. DBY 5 And they were rejoiced, and agreed to give him money. NIV 5 They were delighted and agreed to give him money. DBY 6 And he came to an agreement to do it, and sought an opportunity to deliver him up to them away from the crowd. NIV 6 He consented, and watched for an opportunity to hand Jesus over to them when no crowd was present. DBY 7 And the day of unleavened bread came, in which the passover was to be killed. NIV 7 Then came the day of Unleavened Bread on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed. DBY 8 And he sent Peter and John, saying, Go and prepare the passover for us, that we may eat [it]. NIV 8 Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, "Go and make preparations for us to eat the Passover." DBY 9 But they said to him, Where wilt thou that we prepare [it]? NIV 9 "Where do you want us to prepare for it?" they asked. DBY 10 And he said to them, Behold, as ye enter into the city a man will meet you, carrying an earthen pitcher of water; follow him into the house where he goes in; NIV 10 He replied, "As you enter the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him to the house that he enters, DBY 11 and ye shall say to the master of the house, The Teacher says to thee, Where is the guest-chamber where I may eat the passover with my disciples? NIV 11 and say to the owner of the house, 'The Teacher asks: Where is the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?' DBY 12 And *he* will shew you a large upper room furnished: there make ready. NIV 12 He will show you a large upper room, all furnished. Make preparations there." DBY 13 And having gone they found it as he had said to them; and they prepared the passover. NIV 13 They left and found things just as Jesus had told them. So they prepared the Passover. DBY 14 And when the hour was come, he placed himself at table, and the [twelve] apostles with him. NIV 14 When the hour came, Jesus and his apostles reclined at the table. DBY 15 And he said to them, With desire I have desired to eat this passover with you before I suffer. NIV 15 And he said to them, "I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. DBY 16 For I say unto you, that I will not eat any more at all of it until it be fulfilled in the kingdom of God. NIV 16 For I tell you, I will not eat it again until it finds fulfillment in the kingdom of God." DBY 17 And having received a cup, when he had given thanks he said, Take this and divide it among yourselves. NIV 17 After taking the cup, he gave thanks and said, "Take this and divide it among you. DBY 18 For I say unto you, that I will not drink at all of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God come. NIV 18 For I tell you I will not drink again of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes." DBY 19 And having taken a loaf, when he had given thanks, he broke [it], and gave [it] to them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me. NIV 19 And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, "This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me." DBY 20 In like manner also the cup, after having supped, saying, This cup [is] the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you. NIV 20 In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you. DBY 21 Moreover, behold, the hand of him that delivers me up [is] with me on the table; NIV 21 But the hand of him who is going to betray me is with mine on the table. DBY 22 and the Son of man indeed goes as it is determined, but woe unto that man by whom he is delivered up. NIV 22 The Son of Man will go as it has been decreed, but woe to that man who betrays him." DBY 23 And *they* began to question together among themselves who then it could be of them who was about to do this. NIV 23 They began to question among themselves which of them it might be who would do this. DBY 24 And there was also a strife among them which of them should be held to be [the] greatest. NIV 24 Also a dispute arose among them as to which of them was considered to be greatest. DBY 25 And he said to them, The kings of the nations rule over them, and they that exercise authority over them are called benefactors. NIV 25 Jesus said to them, "The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those who exercise authority over them call themselves Benefactors. DBY 26 But *ye* [shall] not [be] thus; but let the greater among you be as the younger, and the leader as he that serves. NIV 26 But you are not to be like that. Instead, the greatest among you should be like the youngest, and the one who rules like the one who serves. DBY 27 For which [is] greater, he that is at table or he that serves? [Is] not he that is at table? But *I* am in the midst of you as the one that serves. NIV 27 For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who is at the table? But I am among you as one who serves. DBY 28 But *ye* are they who have persevered with me in my temptations. NIV 28 You are those who have stood by me in my trials. DBY 29 And *I* appoint unto you, as my Father has appointed unto me, a kingdom, NIV 29 And I confer on you a kingdom, just as my Father conferred one on me, DBY 30 that ye may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel. NIV 30 so that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom and sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. DBY 31 And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan has demanded to have you, to sift [you] as wheat; NIV 31 "Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift you as wheat. DBY 32 but *I* have besought for thee that thy faith fail not; and *thou*, when once thou hast been restored, confirm thy brethren. NIV 32 But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers." DBY 33 And he said to him, Lord, with thee I am ready to go both to prison and to death. NIV 33 But he replied, "Lord, I am ready to go with you to prison and to death." DBY 34 And he said, I tell thee, Peter, [the] cock shall not crow to-day before that thou shalt thrice deny that thou knowest me. NIV 34 Jesus answered, "I tell you, Peter, before the rooster crows today, you will deny three times that you know me." DBY 35 And he said to them, When I sent you without purse and scrip and sandals, did ye lack anything? And they said, Nothing. NIV 35 Then Jesus asked them, "When I sent you without purse, bag or sandals, did you lack anything?" "Nothing," they answered. DBY 36 He said therefore to them, But now he that has a purse let him take [it], in like manner also a scrip, and he that has none let him sell his garment and buy a sword; NIV 36 He said to them, "But now if you have a purse, take it, and also a bag; and if you don't have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one. DBY 37 for I say unto you, that this that is written must yet be accomplished in me, And he was reckoned with [the] lawless: for also the things concerning me have an end. NIV 37 It is written: 'And he was numbered with the transgressors'; and I tell you that this must be fulfilled in me. Yes, what is written about me is reaching its fulfillment." DBY 38 And they said, Lord, behold here are two swords. And he said to them, It is enough. NIV 38 The disciples said, "See, Lord, here are two swords." "That is enough," he replied. DBY 39 And going forth he went according to his custom to the mount of Olives, and the disciples also followed him. NIV 39 Jesus went out as usual to the Mount of Olives, and his disciples followed him. DBY 40 And when he was at the place he said to them, Pray that ye enter not into temptation. NIV 40 On reaching the place, he said to them, "Pray that you will not fall into temptation." DBY 41 And he was withdrawn from them about a stone's throw, and having knelt down he prayed, NIV 41 He withdrew about a stone's throw beyond them, knelt down and prayed, DBY 42 saying, Father, if thou wilt remove this cup from me: -- but then, not my will, but thine be done. NIV 42 "Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done." DBY 43 And an angel appeared to him from heaven strengthening him. NIV 43 An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him. DBY 44 And being in conflict he prayed more intently. And his sweat became as great drops of blood, falling down upon the earth. NIV 44 And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground. DBY 45 And rising up from his prayer, coming to the disciples, he found them sleeping from grief. NIV 45 When he rose from prayer and went back to the disciples, he found them asleep, exhausted from sorrow. DBY 46 And he said to them, Why sleep ye? rise up and pray that ye enter not into temptation. NIV 46 "Why are you sleeping?" he asked them. "Get up and pray so that you will not fall into temptation." DBY 47 As he was yet speaking, behold, a crowd, and he that was called Judas, one of the twelve, went on before them, and drew near to Jesus to kiss him. NIV 47 While he was still speaking a crowd came up, and the man who was called Judas, one of the Twelve, was leading them. He approached Jesus to kiss him, DBY 48 And Jesus said to him, Judas, deliverest thou up the Son of man with a kiss? NIV 48 but Jesus asked him, "Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?" DBY 49 And they who were around him, seeing what was going to follow, said [to him], Lord, shall we smite with [the] sword? NIV 49 When Jesus' followers saw what was going to happen, they said, "Lord, should we strike with our swords?" DBY 50 And a certain one from among them smote the bondman of the high priest and took off his right ear. NIV 50 And one of them struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his right ear. DBY 51 And Jesus answering said, Suffer thus far; and having touched his ear, he healed him. NIV 51 But Jesus answered, "No more of this!" And he touched the man's ear and healed him. DBY 52 And Jesus said to the chief priests and captains of the temple and elders, who were come against him, Have ye come out as against a robber with swords and sticks? NIV 52 Then Jesus said to the chief priests, the officers of the temple guard, and the elders, who had come for him, "Am I leading a rebellion, that you have come with swords and clubs? DBY 53 When I was day by day with you in the temple ye did not stretch out your hands against me; but this is your hour and the power of darkness. NIV 53 Every day I was with you in the temple courts, and you did not lay a hand on me. But this is your hour--when darkness reigns." DBY 54 And having laid hold on him, they led him [away], and they led [him] into the house of the high priest. And Peter followed afar off. NIV 54 Then seizing him, they led him away and took him into the house of the high priest. Peter followed at a distance. DBY 55 And they having lit a fire in the midst of the court and sat down together, Peter sat among them. NIV 55 But when they had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and had sat down together, Peter sat down with them. DBY 56 And a certain maid, having seen him sitting by the light, and having fixed her eyes upon him, said, And this [man] was with him. NIV 56 A servant girl saw him seated there in the firelight. She looked closely at him and said, "This man was with him." DBY 57 But he denied [him], saying, Woman, I do not know him. NIV 57 But he denied it. "Woman, I don't know him," he said. DBY 58 And after a short time another seeing him said, And *thou* art of them. But Peter said, Man, I am not. NIV 58 A little later someone else saw him and said, "You also are one of them." "Man, I am not!" Peter replied. DBY 59 And after the lapse of about one hour another stoutly maintained it, saying, In truth this [man] also was with him, for also he is a Galilaean. NIV 59 About an hour later another asserted, "Certainly this fellow was with him, for he is a Galilean." DBY 60 And Peter said, Man, I know not what thou sayest. And immediately, while he was yet speaking, [the] cock crew. NIV 60 Peter replied, "Man, I don't know what you're talking about!" Just as he was speaking, the rooster crowed. DBY 61 And the Lord, turning round, looked at Peter; and Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he said to him, Before [the] cock crow thou shalt deny me thrice. NIV 61 The Lord turned and looked straight at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word the Lord had spoken to him: "Before the rooster crows today, you will disown me three times." DBY 62 And Peter, going forth without, wept bitterly. NIV 62 And he went outside and wept bitterly. DBY 63 And the men who held him mocked him, beating [him]; NIV 63 The men who were guarding Jesus began mocking and beating him. DBY 64 and covering him up, asked him saying, Prophesy, who is it that struck thee? NIV 64 They blindfolded him and demanded, "Prophesy! Who hit you?" DBY 65 And they said many other injurious things to him. NIV 65 And they said many other insulting things to him. DBY 66 And when it was day, the elderhood of the people, both [the] chief priests and scribes, were gathered together, and led him into their council, saying, NIV 66 At daybreak the council of the elders of the people, both the chief priests and teachers of the law, met together, and Jesus was led before them. DBY 67 If *thou* art the Christ, tell us. And he said to them, If I tell you, ye will not at all believe; NIV 67 "If you are the Christ, " they said, "tell us." Jesus answered, "If I tell you, you will not believe me, DBY 68 and if I should ask [you], ye would not answer me at all, nor let me go; NIV 68 and if I asked you, you would not answer. DBY 69 but henceforth shall the Son of man be sitting on the right hand of the power of God. NIV 69 But from now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the mighty God." DBY 70 And they all said, *Thou* then art the Son of God? And he said to them, *Ye* say that I am. NIV 70 They all asked, "Are you then the Son of God?" He replied, "You are right in saying I am." DBY 71 And they said, What need have we any more of witness, for we have heard ourselves out of his mouth? NIV 71 Then they said, "Why do we need any more testimony? We have heard it from his own lips."
