Luke 22

LEB 1 Now the feast of Unleavened Bread (which is called Passover) was drawing near. NIV 1 Now the Feast of Unleavened Bread, called the Passover, was approaching, LEB 2 And the chief priests and the scribes were seeking how they could destroy him, because they were afraid of the people. NIV 2 and the chief priests and the teachers of the law were looking for some way to get rid of Jesus, for they were afraid of the people. LEB 3 And Satan entered into Judas, the one called Iscariot, who was of the number of the twelve. NIV 3 Then Satan entered Judas, called Iscariot, one of the Twelve. LEB 4 And he went away [and] discussed with the chief priests and officers of the temple guard how he could betray him to them. NIV 4 And Judas went to the chief priests and the officers of the temple guard and discussed with them how he might betray Jesus. LEB 5 And they were delighted, and came to an agreement with him to give [him] money. NIV 5 They were delighted and agreed to give him money. LEB 6 And he agreed, and began looking for a favorable opportunity to betray him to them apart from the crowd. NIV 6 He consented, and watched for an opportunity to hand Jesus over to them when no crowd was present. LEB 7 And the day of the feast of Unleavened Bread came, on which it was necessary [for] the Passover lamb to be sacrificed. NIV 7 Then came the day of Unleavened Bread on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed. LEB 8 And he sent Peter and John, saying, "Go [and] prepare the Passover for us, so that we may eat [it]. NIV 8 Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, "Go and make preparations for us to eat the Passover." LEB 9 So they said to him, "Where do you want us to prepare [it]?" NIV 9 "Where do you want us to prepare for it?" they asked. LEB 10 And he said to them, "Behold, [when] you have entered into the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him into the house which he enters. NIV 10 He replied, "As you enter the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him to the house that he enters, LEB 11 And you will say to the master of the house, 'The Teacher says to you, "Where is the guest room where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?" ' NIV 11 and say to the owner of the house, 'The Teacher asks: Where is the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?' LEB 12 And he will show you a large furnished upstairs room. Make preparations there." NIV 12 He will show you a large upper room, all furnished. Make preparations there." LEB 13 So they went [and] found [everything] just as he had told them, and they prepared the Passover. NIV 13 They left and found things just as Jesus had told them. So they prepared the Passover. LEB 14 And when the hour came, he reclined at the table, and the apostles with him. NIV 14 When the hour came, Jesus and his apostles reclined at the table. LEB 15 And he said to them, "{I have earnestly desired} to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. NIV 15 And he said to them, "I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. LEB 16 For I tell you that I will not eat it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God." NIV 16 For I tell you, I will not eat it again until it finds fulfillment in the kingdom of God." LEB 17 And he took in hand a cup, [and] [after] giving thanks he said, "Take this and share [it] among yourselves. NIV 17 After taking the cup, he gave thanks and said, "Take this and divide it among you. LEB 18 For I tell you, from now on I will not drink of the product of the vine until the kingdom of God comes." NIV 18 For I tell you I will not drink again of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes." LEB 19 And he took bread, [and] [after] giving thanks, he broke [it] and gave [it] to them, saying, "This is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me." NIV 19 And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, "This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me." LEB 20 And in the same way the cup after [they] had eaten, saying, "This cup [is] the new covenant in my blood which is poured out for you. NIV 20 In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you. LEB 21 "But behold, the hand of the one who is betraying me [is] with me on the table! NIV 21 But the hand of him who is going to betray me is with mine on the table. LEB 22 For the Son of Man is going according to what has been determined, but woe to that man by whom he is betrayed!" NIV 22 The Son of Man will go as it has been decreed, but woe to that man who betrays him." LEB 23 And they began to debate with one another who then of them it could be who was going to do this. NIV 23 They began to question among themselves which of them it might be who would do this. LEB 24 And a dispute also occurred among them as to which of them was recognized as being greatest. NIV 24 Also a dispute arose among them as to which of them was considered to be greatest. LEB 25 So he said to them, "The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them, and those who have authority over them are called benefactors. NIV 25 Jesus said to them, "The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those who exercise authority over them call themselves Benefactors. LEB 26 But you [are] not [to be] like this! But the one who is greatest among you must become like the youngest, and the one who leads like the one who serves. NIV 26 But you are not to be like that. Instead, the greatest among you should be like the youngest, and the one who rules like the one who serves. LEB 27 For who [is] greater, the one who reclines at the table or the one who serves? [Is it] not the one who reclines at the table? But I am in your midst as the one who serves. NIV 27 For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who is at the table? But I am among you as one who serves. LEB 28 "And you are the ones who have remained with me in my trials, NIV 28 You are those who have stood by me in my trials. LEB 29 and I confer on you a kingdom, just as my Father conferred on me, NIV 29 And I confer on you a kingdom, just as my Father conferred one on me, LEB 30 that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and you will sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel. NIV 30 so that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom and sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. LEB 31 "Simon, Simon, behold, Satan has demanded to sift you like wheat, NIV 31 "Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift you as wheat. LEB 32 but I have prayed for you, that your faith may not fail. And you, [when] once you have turned back, strengthen your brothers." NIV 32 But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers." LEB 33 But he said to him, "Lord, I am ready to go with you both to prison and to death!" NIV 33 But he replied, "Lord, I am ready to go with you to prison and to death." LEB 34 And he said, "I tell you, Peter, the rooster will not crow today until you have denied three times [that you] know me!" NIV 34 Jesus answered, "I tell you, Peter, before the rooster crows today, you will deny three times that you know me." LEB 35 And he said to them, "When I sent you out without a money bag and a traveler's bag and sandals, you did not lack anything, [did you]?" And they said, "Nothing." NIV 35 Then Jesus asked them, "When I sent you without purse, bag or sandals, did you lack anything?" "Nothing," they answered. LEB 36 And he said to them, "But now the one who has a money bag must take [it], and likewise a traveler's bag. And the one who does not have a sword must sell his cloak and buy [one]. NIV 36 He said to them, "But now if you have a purse, take it, and also a bag; and if you don't have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one. LEB 37 For I tell you that this that is written must be fulfilled in me: 'And he was counted with the criminals.' For indeed, [what is written] about me {is being fulfilled}." NIV 37 It is written: 'And he was numbered with the transgressors'; and I tell you that this must be fulfilled in me. Yes, what is written about me is reaching its fulfillment." LEB 38 So they said, "Lord, behold, here [are] two swords!" And he said to them, "It is adequate." NIV 38 The disciples said, "See, Lord, here are two swords." "That is enough," he replied. LEB 39 And he went away [and] proceeded, according to [his] custom, to the Mount of Olives, and the disciples also followed him. NIV 39 Jesus went out as usual to the Mount of Olives, and his disciples followed him. LEB 40 And [when] he came to the place, he said to them, "Pray that you will not enter into temptation." LEB 41 And he withdrew from them about a stone's throw and {knelt down} [and] began to pray, NIV 41 He withdrew about a stone's throw beyond them, knelt down and prayed, LEB 42 saying, "Father, if you are willing, take away this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will but yours be done." [[ NIV 42 "Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done." LEB 43 And an angel from heaven appeared to him, strengthening him. NIV 43 An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him. LEB 44 And being in anguish, he began praying more fervently and his sweat became like drops of blood falling down to the ground.]] NIV 44 And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground. LEB 45 And [when he] got up from the prayer [and] came to the disciples, he found them sleeping from sorrow, NIV 45 When he rose from prayer and went back to the disciples, he found them asleep, exhausted from sorrow. LEB 46 and he said to them, "Why are you sleeping? Get up [and] pray that you will not enter into temptation!" NIV 46 "Why are you sleeping?" he asked them. "Get up and pray so that you will not fall into temptation." LEB 47 [While] he was still speaking, behold, [there came] a crowd, and the one named Judas, one of the twelve, leading them. And he approached Jesus to kiss him. NIV 47 While he was still speaking a crowd came up, and the man who was called Judas, one of the Twelve, was leading them. He approached Jesus to kiss him, LEB 48 But Jesus said to him, "Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?" NIV 48 but Jesus asked him, "Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?" LEB 49 And [when] those around him saw what was about to happen, they said, "Lord, should we strike with the sword?" NIV 49 When Jesus' followers saw what was going to happen, they said, "Lord, should we strike with our swords?" LEB 50 And a certain one of them struck the slave of the high priest and cut off his right ear. NIV 50 And one of them struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his right ear. LEB 51 But Jesus answered [and] said, "{Stop! No more of this!}" And he touched [his] ear [and] healed him. NIV 51 But Jesus answered, "No more of this!" And he touched the man's ear and healed him. LEB 52 And Jesus said to the chief priests and officers of the temple and elders who had come out against him, "Have you come out with swords and clubs, as against a robber? NIV 52 Then Jesus said to the chief priests, the officers of the temple guard, and the elders, who had come for him, "Am I leading a rebellion, that you have come with swords and clubs? LEB 53 Every day [when] I was with you in the temple [courts], you did not stretch out [your] hands against me! But this is your hour and the domain of darkness!" NIV 53 Every day I was with you in the temple courts, and you did not lay a hand on me. But this is your hour--when darkness reigns." LEB 54 And they arrested him [and] led [him] away and brought [him] into the house of the high priest. But Peter was following at a distance. NIV 54 Then seizing him, they led him away and took him into the house of the high priest. Peter followed at a distance. LEB 55 And [when they] had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and sat down together, Peter sat down among them. NIV 55 But when they had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and had sat down together, Peter sat down with them. LEB 56 And a certain female slave, seeing him sitting in the light and looking intently at him, said, "This man also was with him!" NIV 56 A servant girl saw him seated there in the firelight. She looked closely at him and said, "This man was with him." LEB 57 But he denied [it], saying, "Woman, I do not know him!" NIV 57 But he denied it. "Woman, I don't know him," he said. LEB 58 And after a short time another person saw him [and] said, "You also are [one] of them!" But Peter said, "Man, I am not!" NIV 58 A little later someone else saw him and said, "You also are one of them." "Man, I am not!" Peter replied. LEB 59 And [after] about one hour had passed, someone else was insisting, saying, "In truth this man also was with him, because he is also a Galilean!" NIV 59 About an hour later another asserted, "Certainly this fellow was with him, for he is a Galilean." LEB 60 But Peter said, "Man, I do not know what you are talking about!" And immediately, [while] he was still speaking, a rooster crowed. NIV 60 Peter replied, "Man, I don't know what you're talking about!" Just as he was speaking, the rooster crowed. LEB 61 And the Lord turned around [and] looked intently at Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he said to him, "Before the rooster crows today, you will deny me three times." NIV 61 The Lord turned and looked straight at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word the Lord had spoken to him: "Before the rooster crows today, you will disown me three times." LEB 62 And he went outside [and] wept bitterly. NIV 62 And he went outside and wept bitterly. LEB 63 And the men who were guarding him began to mock him [while] they beat [him], NIV 63 The men who were guarding Jesus began mocking and beating him. LEB 64 and [after] blindfolding him they repeatedly asked [him], saying, "Prophesy! Who is the one who struck you?" NIV 64 They blindfolded him and demanded, "Prophesy! Who hit you?" LEB 65 And they were saying many other [things] against him, reviling [him]. NIV 65 And they said many other insulting things to him. LEB 66 And when day came, the council of elders of the people gathered, both chief priests and scribes, and they led him away to their Sanhedrin, NIV 66 At daybreak the council of the elders of the people, both the chief priests and teachers of the law, met together, and Jesus was led before them. LEB 67 saying, "If you are the Christ, tell us!" But he said to them, "If I tell you, you will never believe, NIV 67 "If you are the Christ, " they said, "tell us." Jesus answered, "If I tell you, you will not believe me, LEB 68 and if I ask [you], you will never answer! NIV 68 and if I asked you, you would not answer. LEB 69 But from now on the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the power of God." NIV 69 But from now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the mighty God." LEB 70 So they all said, "Are you then the Son of God?" And he said to them, "You say that I am." NIV 70 They all asked, "Are you then the Son of God?" He replied, "You are right in saying I am." LEB 71 And they said, "Why do we have need [of] further testimony? For [we] ourselves have heard [it] from his mouth!" NIV 71 Then they said, "Why do we need any more testimony? We have heard it from his own lips."
