Luke 22

NRS 1 Now the festival of Unleavened Bread, which is called the Passover, was near. NIV 1 Now the Feast of Unleavened Bread, called the Passover, was approaching, NRS 2 The chief priests and the scribes were looking for a way to put Jesus to death, for they were afraid of the people. NIV 2 and the chief priests and the teachers of the law were looking for some way to get rid of Jesus, for they were afraid of the people. NRS 3 Then Satan entered into Judas called Iscariot, who was one of the twelve; NIV 3 Then Satan entered Judas, called Iscariot, one of the Twelve. NRS 4 he went away and conferred with the chief priests and officers of the temple police about how he might betray him to them. NIV 4 And Judas went to the chief priests and the officers of the temple guard and discussed with them how he might betray Jesus. NRS 5 They were greatly pleased and agreed to give him money. NIV 5 They were delighted and agreed to give him money. NRS 6 So he consented and began to look for an opportunity to betray him to them when no crowd was present. NIV 6 He consented, and watched for an opportunity to hand Jesus over to them when no crowd was present. NRS 7 Then came the day of Unleavened Bread, on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed. NIV 7 Then came the day of Unleavened Bread on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed. NRS 8 So Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, "Go and prepare the Passover meal for us that we may eat it." NIV 8 Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, "Go and make preparations for us to eat the Passover." NRS 9 They asked him, "Where do you want us to make preparations for it?" NIV 9 "Where do you want us to prepare for it?" they asked. NRS 10 "Listen," he said to them, "when you have entered the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you; follow him into the house he enters NIV 10 He replied, "As you enter the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him to the house that he enters, NRS 11 and say to the owner of the house, "The teacher asks you, "Where is the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?" ' NIV 11 and say to the owner of the house, 'The Teacher asks: Where is the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?' NRS 12 He will show you a large room upstairs, already furnished. Make preparations for us there." NIV 12 He will show you a large upper room, all furnished. Make preparations there." NRS 13 So they went and found everything as he had told them; and they prepared the Passover meal. NIV 13 They left and found things just as Jesus had told them. So they prepared the Passover. NRS 14 When the hour came, he took his place at the table, and the apostles with him. NIV 14 When the hour came, Jesus and his apostles reclined at the table. NRS 15 He said to them, "I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer; NIV 15 And he said to them, "I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. NRS 16 for I tell you, I will not eat it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God." NIV 16 For I tell you, I will not eat it again until it finds fulfillment in the kingdom of God." NRS 17 Then he took a cup, and after giving thanks he said, "Take this and divide it among yourselves; NIV 17 After taking the cup, he gave thanks and said, "Take this and divide it among you. NRS 18 for I tell you that from now on I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes." NIV 18 For I tell you I will not drink again of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes." NRS 19 Then he took a loaf of bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, "This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me." NIV 19 And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, "This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me." NRS 20 And he did the same with the cup after supper, saying, "This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood. NIV 20 In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you. NRS 21 But see, the one who betrays me is with me, and his hand is on the table. NIV 21 But the hand of him who is going to betray me is with mine on the table. NRS 22 For the Son of Man is going as it has been determined, but woe to that one by whom he is betrayed!" NIV 22 The Son of Man will go as it has been decreed, but woe to that man who betrays him." NRS 23 Then they began to ask one another which one of them it could be who would do this. NIV 23 They began to question among themselves which of them it might be who would do this. NRS 24 A dispute also arose among them as to which one of them was to be regarded as the greatest. NIV 24 Also a dispute arose among them as to which of them was considered to be greatest. NRS 25 But he said to them, "The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those in authority over them are called benefactors. NIV 25 Jesus said to them, "The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those who exercise authority over them call themselves Benefactors. NRS 26 But not so with you; rather the greatest among you must become like the youngest, and the leader like one who serves. NIV 26 But you are not to be like that. Instead, the greatest among you should be like the youngest, and the one who rules like the one who serves. NRS 27 For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one at the table? But I am among you as one who serves. NIV 27 For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who is at the table? But I am among you as one who serves. NRS 28 "You are those who have stood by me in my trials; NIV 28 You are those who have stood by me in my trials. NRS 29 and I confer on you, just as my Father has conferred on me, a kingdom, NIV 29 And I confer on you a kingdom, just as my Father conferred one on me, NRS 30 so that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and you will sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel. NIV 30 so that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom and sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. NRS 31 "Simon, Simon, listen! Satan has demanded to sift all of you like wheat, NIV 31 "Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift you as wheat. NRS 32 but I have prayed for you that your own faith may not fail; and you, when once you have turned back, strengthen your brothers." NIV 32 But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers." NRS 33 And he said to him, "Lord, I am ready to go with you to prison and to death!" NIV 33 But he replied, "Lord, I am ready to go with you to prison and to death." NRS 34 Jesus said, "I tell you, Peter, the cock will not crow this day, until you have denied three times that you know me." NIV 34 Jesus answered, "I tell you, Peter, before the rooster crows today, you will deny three times that you know me." NRS 35 He said to them, "When I sent you out without a purse, bag, or sandals, did you lack anything?" They said, "No, not a thing." NIV 35 Then Jesus asked them, "When I sent you without purse, bag or sandals, did you lack anything?" "Nothing," they answered. NRS 36 He said to them, "But now, the one who has a purse must take it, and likewise a bag. And the one who has no sword must sell his cloak and buy one. NIV 36 He said to them, "But now if you have a purse, take it, and also a bag; and if you don't have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one. NRS 37 For I tell you, this scripture must be fulfilled in me, "And he was counted among the lawless'; and indeed what is written about me is being fulfilled." NIV 37 It is written: 'And he was numbered with the transgressors'; and I tell you that this must be fulfilled in me. Yes, what is written about me is reaching its fulfillment." NRS 38 They said, "Lord, look, here are two swords." He replied, "It is enough." NIV 38 The disciples said, "See, Lord, here are two swords." "That is enough," he replied. NRS 39 He came out and went, as was his custom, to the Mount of Olives; and the disciples followed him. NIV 39 Jesus went out as usual to the Mount of Olives, and his disciples followed him. NRS 40 When he reached the place, he said to them, "Pray that you may not come into the time of trial." NIV 40 On reaching the place, he said to them, "Pray that you will not fall into temptation." NRS 41 Then he withdrew from them about a stone's throw, knelt down, and prayed, NIV 41 He withdrew about a stone's throw beyond them, knelt down and prayed, NRS 42 "Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me; yet, not my will but yours be done." NIV 42 "Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done." NRS 43 [Then an angel from heaven appeared to him and gave him strength. NIV 43 An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him. NRS 44 In his anguish he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat became like great drops of blood falling down on the ground.] NIV 44 And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground. NRS 45 When he got up from prayer, he came to the disciples and found them sleeping because of grief, NIV 45 When he rose from prayer and went back to the disciples, he found them asleep, exhausted from sorrow. NRS 46 and he said to them, "Why are you sleeping? Get up and pray that you may not come into the time of trial." NIV 46 "Why are you sleeping?" he asked them. "Get up and pray so that you will not fall into temptation." NRS 47 While he was still speaking, suddenly a crowd came, and the one called Judas, one of the twelve, was leading them. He approached Jesus to kiss him; NIV 47 While he was still speaking a crowd came up, and the man who was called Judas, one of the Twelve, was leading them. He approached Jesus to kiss him, NRS 48 but Jesus said to him, "Judas, is it with a kiss that you are betraying the Son of Man?" NIV 48 but Jesus asked him, "Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?" NRS 49 When those who were around him saw what was coming, they asked, "Lord, should we strike with the sword?" NIV 49 When Jesus' followers saw what was going to happen, they said, "Lord, should we strike with our swords?" NRS 50 Then one of them struck the slave of the high priest and cut off his right ear. NIV 50 And one of them struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his right ear. NRS 51 But Jesus said, "No more of this!" And he touched his ear and healed him. NIV 51 But Jesus answered, "No more of this!" And he touched the man's ear and healed him. NRS 52 Then Jesus said to the chief priests, the officers of the temple police, and the elders who had come for him, "Have you come out with swords and clubs as if I were a bandit? NIV 52 Then Jesus said to the chief priests, the officers of the temple guard, and the elders, who had come for him, "Am I leading a rebellion, that you have come with swords and clubs? NRS 53 When I was with you day after day in the temple, you did not lay hands on me. But this is your hour, and the power of darkness!" NIV 53 Every day I was with you in the temple courts, and you did not lay a hand on me. But this is your hour--when darkness reigns." NRS 54 Then they seized him and led him away, bringing him into the high priest's house. But Peter was following at a distance. NIV 54 Then seizing him, they led him away and took him into the house of the high priest. Peter followed at a distance. NRS 55 When they had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and sat down together, Peter sat among them. NIV 55 But when they had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and had sat down together, Peter sat down with them. NRS 56 Then a servant-girl, seeing him in the firelight, stared at him and said, "This man also was with him." NIV 56 A servant girl saw him seated there in the firelight. She looked closely at him and said, "This man was with him." NRS 57 But he denied it, saying, "Woman, I do not know him." NIV 57 But he denied it. "Woman, I don't know him," he said. NRS 58 A little later someone else, on seeing him, said, "You also are one of them." But Peter said, "Man, I am not!" NIV 58 A little later someone else saw him and said, "You also are one of them." "Man, I am not!" Peter replied. NRS 59 Then about an hour later still another kept insisting, "Surely this man also was with him; for he is a Galilean." NIV 59 About an hour later another asserted, "Certainly this fellow was with him, for he is a Galilean." NRS 60 But Peter said, "Man, I do not know what you are talking about!" At that moment, while he was still speaking, the cock crowed. NIV 60 Peter replied, "Man, I don't know what you're talking about!" Just as he was speaking, the rooster crowed. NRS 61 The Lord turned and looked at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said to him, "Before the cock crows today, you will deny me three times." NIV 61 The Lord turned and looked straight at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word the Lord had spoken to him: "Before the rooster crows today, you will disown me three times." NRS 62 And he went out and wept bitterly. NIV 62 And he went outside and wept bitterly. NRS 63 Now the men who were holding Jesus began to mock him and beat him; NIV 63 The men who were guarding Jesus began mocking and beating him. NRS 64 they also blindfolded him and kept asking him, "Prophesy! Who is it that struck you?" NIV 64 They blindfolded him and demanded, "Prophesy! Who hit you?" NRS 65 They kept heaping many other insults on him. NIV 65 And they said many other insulting things to him. NRS 66 When day came, the assembly of the elders of the people, both chief priests and scribes, gathered together, and they brought him to their council. NIV 66 At daybreak the council of the elders of the people, both the chief priests and teachers of the law, met together, and Jesus was led before them. NRS 67 They said, "If you are the Messiah, tell us." He replied, "If I tell you, you will not believe; NIV 67 "If you are the Christ, " they said, "tell us." Jesus answered, "If I tell you, you will not believe me, NRS 68 and if I question you, you will not answer. NIV 68 and if I asked you, you would not answer. NRS 69 But from now on the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the power of God." NIV 69 But from now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the mighty God." NRS 70 All of them asked, "Are you, then, the Son of God?" He said to them, "You say that I am." NIV 70 They all asked, "Are you then the Son of God?" He replied, "You are right in saying I am." NRS 71 Then they said, "What further testimony do we need? We have heard it ourselves from his own lips!" NIV 71 Then they said, "Why do we need any more testimony? We have heard it from his own lips."
