Luke 3

WNT 1 Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being Governor of Judaea, Herod Tetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip Tetrarch of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias Tetrarch of Abilene, NIV 1 In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar--when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, Herod tetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip tetrarch of Iturea and Traconitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene-- WNT 2 during the High-priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, a message from God came to John, the son of Zechariah, in the Desert. NIV 2 during the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John son of Zechariah in the desert. WNT 3 John went into all the district about the Jordan proclaiming a baptism of the penitent for the forgiveness of sins; NIV 3 He went into all the country around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. WNT 4 as it is written in the book of the prophet Isaiah, "The voice of one crying aloud! `In the Desert prepare ye a road for the Lord: make His highway straight. NIV 4 As is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet: "A voice of one calling in the desert, 'Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him. WNT 5 Every ravine shall be filled up, and every mountain and hill levelled down, the crooked places shall be turned into straight roads, and the rugged ways into smooth; NIV 5 Every valley shall be filled in, every mountain and hill made low. The crooked roads shall become straight, the rough ways smooth. WNT 6 and then shall all mankind see God's salvation.'" NIV 6 And all mankind will see God's salvation.' " WNT 7 Accordingly John used to say to the crowds who came out to be baptized by him, "O vipers' brood, who has warned you to flee from the coming wrath? NIV 7 John said to the crowds coming out to be baptized by him, "You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? WNT 8 Live lives which shall prove your change of heart; and do not begin to say to yourselves, `We have Abraham as our forefather,' for I tell you that God can raise up descendants for Abraham from these stones. NIV 8 Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. And do not begin to say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our father.' For I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham. WNT 9 And even now the axe is lying at the root of the trees, so that every tree which fails to yield good fruit will quickly be hewn down and thrown into the fire." NIV 9 The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire." WNT 10 The crowds repeatedly asked him, "What then are we to do?" NIV 10 "What should we do then?" the crowd asked. WNT 11 "Let the man who has two coats," he answered, "give one to the man who has none; and let the man who has food share it with others." NIV 11 John answered, "The man with two tunics should share with him who has none, and the one who has food should do the same." WNT 12 There came also a party of tax-gatherers to be baptized, and they asked him, "Rabbi, what are we to do?" NIV 12 Tax collectors also came to be baptized. "Teacher," they asked, "what should we do?" WNT 13 "Do not exact more than the legal amount," he replied. NIV 13 "Don't collect any more than you are required to," he told them. WNT 14 The soldiers also once and again inquired of him, "And we, what are we to do?" His answer was, "Neither intimidate any one nor lay false charges; and be content with your pay." NIV 14 Then some soldiers asked him, "And what should we do?" He replied, "Don't extort money and don't accuse people falsely--be content with your pay." WNT 15 And while the people were in suspense and all were debating in their minds whether John might possibly be the Anointed One, NIV 15 The people were waiting expectantly and were all wondering in their hearts if John might possibly be the Christ. WNT 16 he answered the question by saying to them all, "As for me, I am baptizing you with water, but One mightier than I is coming, whose very sandal-strap I am not worthy to unfasten: He will baptize you in the Holy Spirit and with fire. NIV 16 John answered them all, "I baptize you with water. But one more powerful than I will come, the thongs of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. WNT 17 His winnowing-shovel is in His hand to clear out His threshing-floor, and to gather the wheat into His storehouse; but the chaff He will burn up in fire unquenchable." NIV 17 His winnowing fork is in his hand to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his barn, but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire." WNT 18 With many exhortations besides these he declared the Good News to the people. NIV 18 And with many other words John exhorted the people and preached the good news to them. WNT 19 But Herod the Tetrarch, being repeatedly rebuked by him about Herodias his brother's wife, and about all the wicked deeds that he had done, NIV 19 But when John rebuked Herod the tetrarch because of Herodias, his brother's wife, and all the other evil things he had done, WNT 20 now added this to crown all the rest, that he threw John into prison. NIV 20 Herod added this to them all: He locked John up in prison. WNT 21 Now when all the people had been baptized, and Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, the sky opened, NIV 21 When all the people were being baptized, Jesus was baptized too. And as he was praying, heaven was opened WNT 22 and the Holy Spirit came down in bodily shape, like a dove, upon Him, and a voice came from Heaven, which said, "Thou art My Son, dearly loved: in Thee is My delight." NIV 22 and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: "You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased."
