Luke 6

CJB 1 One Shabbat, while Yeshua was passing through some wheat fields, his talmidim began plucking the heads of grain, rubbing them between their hands and eating the seeds. NIV 1 One Sabbath Jesus was going through the grainfields, and his disciples began to pick some heads of grain, rub them in their hands and eat the kernels. CJB 2 Some of the P'rushim said, "Why are you violating Shabbat?" NIV 2 Some of the Pharisees asked, "Why are you doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?" CJB 3 Yeshua answered them, "Haven't you ever read what David did when he and his companions were hungry? NIV 3 Jesus answered them, "Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry? CJB 4 He entered the House of God and took and ate the Bread of the Presence" -- which no one is permitted to eat but the cohanim. NIV 4 He entered the house of God, and taking the consecrated bread, he ate what is lawful only for priests to eat. And he also gave some to his companions." CJB 5 "The Son of Man," he concluded, "is Lord of Shabbat." NIV 5 Then Jesus said to them, "The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath." CJB 6 On another Shabbat, when Yeshua had gone into the synagogue and was teaching, a man was there who had a shriveled hand. NIV 6 On another Sabbath he went into the synagogue and was teaching, and a man was there whose right hand was shriveled. CJB 7 The Torah-teachers and P'rushim watched Yeshua carefully to see if he would heal on Shabbat, so that they could accuse him of something. NIV 7 The Pharisees and the teachers of the law were looking for a reason to accuse Jesus, so they watched him closely to see if he would heal on the Sabbath. CJB 8 But he knew what they were thinking and said to the man with the shriveled hand, "Come up and stand where we can see you!" He got up and stood there. NIV 8 But Jesus knew what they were thinking and said to the man with the shriveled hand, "Get up and stand in front of everyone." So he got up and stood there. CJB 9 Then Yeshua said to them, "I ask you now: what is permitted on Shabbat? Doing good or doing evil? Saving life or destroying it?" NIV 9 Then Jesus said to them, "I ask you, which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to destroy it?" CJB 10 Then, after looking around at all of them, he said to the man, "Hold out your hand." As he held it out, his hand was restored. NIV 10 He looked around at them all, and then said to the man, "Stretch out your hand." He did so, and his hand was completely restored. CJB 11 But the others were filled with fury and began discussing with each other what they could do to Yeshua. NIV 11 But they were furious and began to discuss with one another what they might do to Jesus. CJB 12 It was around that time that Yeshua went out to the hill country to pray, and all night he continued in prayer to God. NIV 12 One of those days Jesus went out to a mountainside to pray, and spent the night praying to God. CJB 13 When day came, he called his talmidim and chose from among them twelve to be known as emissaries: NIV 13 When morning came, he called his disciples to him and chose twelve of them, whom he also designated apostles: CJB 14 Shim`on, whom he named Kefa; Andrew, his brother; Ya`akov; Yochanan; Philip; Bar-Talmai; NIV 14 Simon (whom he named Peter), his brother Andrew, James, John, Philip, Bartholomew, CJB 15 Mattityahu; T'oma; Ya`akov Ben-Halfai; NIV 15 Matthew, Thomas, James son of Alphaeus, Simon who was called the Zealot, CJB 16 Shim`on, the one called the Zealot; Y'hudah Ben-Ya`akov; and Y'hudah from K'riot, who turned traitor. NIV 16 Judas son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor. CJB 17 Then he came down with them and stood on a level place. A large crowd of his talmidim was there with great numbers of people from all Y'hudah, Yerushalayim and the coast around Tzor and Tzidon; they had come to hear him and be healed of their diseases. NIV 17 He went down with them and stood on a level place. A large crowd of his disciples was there and a great number of people from all over Judea, from Jerusalem, and from the coast of Tyre and Sidon, CJB 18 Those who were troubled with unclean spirits were being healed; NIV 18 who had come to hear him and to be healed of their diseases. Those troubled by evil spirits were cured, CJB 19 and the whole crowd was trying to touch him, because power kept going out from him, healing everyone. NIV 19 and the people all tried to touch him, because power was coming from him and healing them all. CJB 20 He looked at his talmidim and said: "How blessed are you poor! for the Kingdom of God is yours. NIV 20 Looking at his disciples, he said: "Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. CJB 21 "How blessed are you who are hungry! for you will be filled. "How blessed are you who are crying now! for you will laugh. NIV 21 Blessed are you who hunger now, for you will be satisfied. Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh. CJB 22 "How blessed you are whenever people hate you and ostracize you and insult you and denounce you as a criminal on account of the Son of Man. NIV 22 Blessed are you when men hate you, when they exclude you and insult you and reject your name as evil, because of the Son of Man. CJB 23 Be glad when that happens; yes, dance for joy! because in heaven your reward is great. For that is just how their fathers treated the prophets. NIV 23 "Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, because great is your reward in heaven. For that is how their fathers treated the prophets. CJB 24 "But woe to you who are rich, for you have already had all the comfort you will get! NIV 24 "But woe to you who are rich, for you have already received your comfort. CJB 25 "Woe to you who are full now, for you will go hungry! "Woe to you who are laughing now, for you will mourn and cry! NIV 25 Woe to you who are well fed now, for you will go hungry. Woe to you who laugh now, for you will mourn and weep. CJB 26 "Woe to you when people speak well of you, for that is just how their fathers treated the false prophets! NIV 26 Woe to you when all men speak well of you, for that is how their fathers treated the false prophets. CJB 27 Nevertheless, to you who are listening, what I say is this: "Love your enemies! Do good to those who hate you, NIV 27 "But I tell you who hear me: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, CJB 28 bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. NIV 28 bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. CJB 29 "If someone hits you on one cheek, offer the other too; if someone takes your coat, let him have your shirt as well. NIV 29 If someone strikes you on one cheek, turn to him the other also. If someone takes your cloak, do not stop him from taking your tunic. CJB 30 "If someone asks you for something, give it to him; if someone takes what belongs to you, don't demand it back. NIV 30 Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what belongs to you, do not demand it back. CJB 31 "Treat other people as you would like them to treat you. NIV 31 Do to others as you would have them do to you. CJB 32 What credit is it to you if you love only those who love you? Why, even sinners love those who love them. NIV 32 "If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even 'sinners' love those who love them. CJB 33 What credit is it to you if you do good only to those who do good to you? Even sinners do that. NIV 33 And if you do good to those who are good to you, what credit is that to you? Even 'sinners' do that. CJB 34 What credit is it to you if you lend only to those who you expect will pay you back? Even sinners lend to each other, expecting to be repaid in full. NIV 34 And if you lend to those from whom you expect repayment, what credit is that to you? Even 'sinners' lend to 'sinners,' expecting to be repaid in full. CJB 35 But love your enemies, do good, and lend expecting nothing back! Your reward will be great, and you will be children of Ha`Elyon; for he is kind to the ungrateful and the wicked. NIV 35 But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked. CJB 36 Show compassion, just as your Father shows compassion. NIV 36 Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful. CJB 37 "Don't judge, and you won't be judged. Don't condemn, and you won't be condemned. "Forgive, and you will be forgiven. NIV 37 "Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven. CJB 38 Give, and you will receive gifts -- the full measure, compacted, shaken together and overflowing, will be put right in your lap. For the measure with which you measure out will be used to measure back to you!" NIV 38 Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you." CJB 39 He also told them a parable: "Can one blind man lead another blind man? Won't they both fall into a pit? NIV 39 He also told them this parable: "Can a blind man lead a blind man? Will they not both fall into a pit? CJB 40 A talmid is not above his rabbi; but each one, when he is fully trained, will be like his rabbi. NIV 40 A student is not above his teacher, but everyone who is fully trained will be like his teacher. CJB 41 So why do you see the splinter in your brother's eye, but not notice the log in your own eye? NIV 41 "Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother's eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? CJB 42 How can you say to your brother, `Brother, let me remove the splinter from your eye,' when you yourself don't see the log in your own eye? You hypocrite! First take the log out of your own eye; then you will see clearly, so that you can remove the splinter from your brother's eye! NIV 42 How can you say to your brother, 'Brother, let me take the speck out of your eye,' when you yourself fail to see the plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye. CJB 43 "For no good tree produces bad fruit, nor does a bad tree produce good fruit. NIV 43 "No good tree bears bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit. CJB 44 Each tree is recognized by its own fruit -- figs aren't picked from thorn bushes, nor grapes from a briar patch. NIV 44 Each tree is recognized by its own fruit. People do not pick figs from thornbushes, or grapes from briers. CJB 45 The good person produces good things from the store of good in his heart, while the evil person produces evil things from the store of evil in his heart. For his mouth speaks what overflows from his heart. NIV 45 The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For out of the overflow of his heart his mouth speaks. CJB 46 "Why do you call me, `Lord! Lord!' but not do what I say? NIV 46 "Why do you call me, 'Lord, Lord,' and do not do what I say? CJB 47 Everyone who comes to me, hears my words and acts on them -- I will show you what he is like: NIV 47 I will show you what he is like who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice. CJB 48 he is like someone building a house who dug deep and laid the foundation on bedrock. When a flood came, the torrent beat against that house but couldn't shake it, because it was constructed well. NIV 48 He is like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built. CJB 49 And whoever hears my words but doesn't act on them is like someone who built his house on the ground without any foundation. As soon as the river struck it, it collapsed and that house became a horrendous wreck!" NIV 49 But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete."
