Luke 8:22-39

RSV 22 One day he got into a boat with his disciples, and he said to them, "Let us go across to the other side of the lake." So they set out, NIV 22 One day Jesus said to his disciples, "Let's go over to the other side of the lake." So they got into a boat and set out. RSV 23 and as they sailed he fell asleep. And a storm of wind came down on the lake, and they were filling with water, and were in danger. NIV 23 As they sailed, he fell asleep. A squall came down on the lake, so that the boat was being swamped, and they were in great danger. RSV 24 And they went and woke him, saying, "Master, Master, we are perishing!" And he awoke and rebuked the wind and the raging waves; and they ceased, and there was a calm. NIV 24 The disciples went and woke him, saying, "Master, Master, we're going to drown!" He got up and rebuked the wind and the raging waters; the storm subsided, and all was calm. RSV 25 He said to them, "Where is your faith?" And they were afraid, and they marveled, saying to one another, "Who then is this, that he commands even wind and water, and they obey him?" NIV 25 "Where is your faith?" he asked his disciples. In fear and amazement they asked one another, "Who is this? He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him." RSV 26 Then they arrived at the country of the Ger'asenes, which is opposite Galilee. NIV 26 They sailed to the region of the Gerasenes, which is across the lake from Galilee. RSV 27 And as he stepped out on land, there met him a man from the city who had demons; for a long time he had worn no clothes, and he lived not in a house but among the tombs. NIV 27 When Jesus stepped ashore, he was met by a demon-possessed man from the town. For a long time this man had not worn clothes or lived in a house, but had lived in the tombs. RSV 28 When he saw Jesus, he cried out and fell down before him, and said with a loud voice, "What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beseech you, do not torment me." NIV 28 When he saw Jesus, he cried out and fell at his feet, shouting at the top of his voice, "What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg you, don't torture me!" RSV 29 For he had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. (For many a time it had seized him; he was kept under guard, and bound with chains and fetters, but he broke the bonds and was driven by the demon into the desert.) NIV 29 For Jesus had commanded the evil spirit to come out of the man. Many times it had seized him, and though he was chained hand and foot and kept under guard, he had broken his chains and had been driven by the demon into solitary places. RSV 30 Jesus then asked him, "What is your name?" And he said, "Legion"; for many demons had entered him. NIV 30 Jesus asked him, "What is your name?" "Legion," he replied, because many demons had gone into him. RSV 31 And they begged him not to command them to depart into the abyss. NIV 31 And they begged him repeatedly not to order them to go into the Abyss. RSV 32 Now a large herd of swine was feeding there on the hillside; and they begged him to let them enter these. So he gave them leave. NIV 32 A large herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside. The demons begged Jesus to let them go into them, and he gave them permission. RSV 33 Then the demons came out of the man and entered the swine, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and were drowned. NIV 33 When the demons came out of the man, they went into the pigs, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and was drowned. RSV 34 When the herdsmen saw what had happened, they fled, and told it in the city and in the country. NIV 34 When those tending the pigs saw what had happened, they ran off and reported this in the town and countryside, RSV 35 Then people went out to see what had happened, and they came to Jesus, and found the man from whom the demons had gone, sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed and in his right mind; and they were afraid. NIV 35 and the people went out to see what had happened. When they came to Jesus, they found the man from whom the demons had gone out, sitting at Jesus' feet, dressed and in his right mind; and they were afraid. RSV 36 And those who had seen it told them how he who had been possessed with demons was healed. NIV 36 Those who had seen it told the people how the demon-possessed man had been cured. RSV 37 Then all the people of the surrounding country of the Ger'asenes asked him to depart from them; for they were seized with great fear; so he got into the boat and returned. NIV 37 Then all the people of the region of the Gerasenes asked Jesus to leave them, because they were overcome with fear. So he got into the boat and left. RSV 38 The man from whom the demons had gone begged that he might be with him; but he sent him away, saying, NIV 38 The man from whom the demons had gone out begged to go with him, but Jesus sent him away, saying, RSV 39 "Return to your home, and declare how much God has done for you." And he went away, proclaiming throughout the whole city how much Jesus had done for him. NIV 39 "Return home and tell how much God has done for you." So the man went away and told all over town how much Jesus had done for him.
