Luke 8:4-21

RSV 4 And when a great crowd came together and people from town after town came to him, he said in a parable: NIV 4 While a large crowd was gathering and people were coming to Jesus from town after town, he told this parable: RSV 5 "A sower went out to sow his seed; and as he sowed, some fell along the path, and was trodden under foot, and the birds of the air devoured it. NIV 5 "A farmer went out to sow his seed. As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path; it was trampled on, and the birds of the air ate it up. RSV 6 And some fell on the rock; and as it grew up, it withered away, because it had no moisture. NIV 6 Some fell on rock, and when it came up, the plants withered because they had no moisture. RSV 7 And some fell among thorns; and the thorns grew with it and choked it. NIV 7 Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up with it and choked the plants. RSV 8 And some fell into good soil and grew, and yielded a hundredfold." As he said this, he called out, "He who has ears to hear, let him hear." NIV 8 Still other seed fell on good soil. It came up and yielded a crop, a hundred times more than was sown." When he said this, he called out, "He who has ears to hear, let him hear." RSV 9 And when his disciples asked him what this parable meant, NIV 9 His disciples asked him what this parable meant. RSV 10 he said, "To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of God; but for others they are in parables, so that seeing they may not see, and hearing they may not understand. NIV 10 He said, "The knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of God has been given to you, but to others I speak in parables, so that, " 'though seeing, they may not see; though hearing, they may not understand.' RSV 11 Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. NIV 11 "This is the meaning of the parable: The seed is the word of God. RSV 12 The ones along the path are those who have heard; then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, that they may not believe and be saved. NIV 12 Those along the path are the ones who hear, and then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that they may not believe and be saved. RSV 13 And the ones on the rock are those who, when they hear the word, receive it with joy; but these have no root, they believe for a while and in time of temptation fall away. NIV 13 Those on the rock are the ones who receive the word with joy when they hear it, but they have no root. They believe for a while, but in the time of testing they fall away. RSV 14 And as for what fell among the thorns, they are those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by the cares and riches and pleasures of life, and their fruit does not mature. NIV 14 The seed that fell among thorns stands for those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by life's worries, riches and pleasures, and they do not mature. RSV 15 And as for that in the good soil, they are those who, hearing the word, hold it fast in an honest and good heart, and bring forth fruit with patience. NIV 15 But the seed on good soil stands for those with a noble and good heart, who hear the word, retain it, and by persevering produce a crop. RSV 16 "No one after lighting a lamp covers it with a vessel, or puts it under a bed, but puts it on a stand, that those who enter may see the light. NIV 16 "No one lights a lamp and hides it in a jar or puts it under a bed. Instead, he puts it on a stand, so that those who come in can see the light. RSV 17 For nothing is hid that shall not be made manifest, nor anything secret that shall not be known and come to light. NIV 17 For there is nothing hidden that will not be disclosed, and nothing concealed that will not be known or brought out into the open. RSV 18 Take heed then how you hear; for to him who has will more be given, and from him who has not, even what he thinks that he has will be taken away." NIV 18 Therefore consider carefully how you listen. Whoever has will be given more; whoever does not have, even what he thinks he has will be taken from him." RSV 19 Then his mother and his brothers came to him, but they could not reach him for the crowd. NIV 19 Now Jesus' mother and brothers came to see him, but they were not able to get near him because of the crowd. RSV 20 And he was told, "Your mother and your brothers are standing outside, desiring to see you." NIV 20 Someone told him, "Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to see you." RSV 21 But he said to them, "My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and do it." NIV 21 He replied, "My mother and brothers are those who hear God's word and put it into practice."
