Luke 9:51-62

NRS 51 When the days drew near for him to be taken up, he set his face to go to Jerusalem. NIV 51 As the time approached for him to be taken up to heaven, Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem. NRS 52 And he sent messengers ahead of him. On their way they entered a village of the Samaritans to make ready for him; NIV 52 And he sent messengers on ahead, who went into a Samaritan village to get things ready for him; NRS 53 but they did not receive him, because his face was set toward Jerusalem. NIV 53 but the people there did not welcome him, because he was heading for Jerusalem. NRS 54 When his disciples James and John saw it, they said, "Lord, do you want us to command fire to come down from heaven and consume them?" NIV 54 When the disciples James and John saw this, they asked, "Lord, do you want us to call fire down from heaven to destroy them ?" NRS 55 But he turned and rebuked them. NIV 55 But Jesus turned and rebuked them, NRS 56 Then they went on to another village. NIV 56 and they went to another village. NRS 57 As they were going along the road, someone said to him, "I will follow you wherever you go." NIV 57 As they were walking along the road, a man said to him, "I will follow you wherever you go." NRS 58 And Jesus said to him, "Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head." NIV 58 Jesus replied, "Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head." NRS 59 To another he said, "Follow me." But he said, "Lord, first let me go and bury my father." NIV 59 He said to another man, "Follow me." But the man replied, "Lord, first let me go and bury my father." NRS 60 But Jesus said to him, "Let the dead bury their own dead; but as for you, go and proclaim the kingdom of God." NIV 60 Jesus said to him, "Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God." NRS 61 Another said, "I will follow you, Lord; but let me first say farewell to those at my home." NIV 61 Still another said, "I will follow you, Lord; but first let me go back and say good-by to my family." NRS 62 Jesus said to him, "No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God." NIV 62 Jesus replied, "No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God."
