LEB 5 And all the Judean region and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem went out to him and were being baptized by him in the Jordan River, confessing their sins. NIV 5 The whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem went out to him. Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River. LEB 6 And John was dressed in camel's hair and a belt made of leather around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. NIV 6 John wore clothing made of camel's hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. LEB 7 And he was preaching, saying, "One [who is] more powerful than I is coming after me, of whom I am not worthy to bend down [and] untie the strap of his sandals. NIV 7 And this was his message: "After me will come one more powerful than I, the thongs of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie. LEB 8 I baptized you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit." NIV 8 I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit." LEB 9 And it happened that in those days Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized in the Jordan by John. NIV 9 At that time Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. LEB 10 And immediately [as he] was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens being split apart and the Spirit descending like a dove on him. NIV 10 As Jesus was coming up out of the water, he saw heaven being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. LEB 11 And a voice came from heaven, "You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased." NIV 11 And a voice came from heaven: "You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased." LEB 12 And immediately the Spirit drove him out into the wilderness. NIV 12 At once the Spirit sent him out into the desert, LEB 13 And he was in the wilderness forty days being tempted by Satan. And he was with the wild animals, and the angels were ministering to him. NIV 13 and he was in the desert forty days, being tempted by Satan. He was with the wild animals, and angels attended him. LEB 14 And after John {had been taken into custody}, Jesus went into Galilee proclaiming the gospel of God NIV 14 After John was put in prison, Jesus went into Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God. LEB 15 and saying, "The time is fulfilled and the kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe in the gospel!" NIV 15 "The time has come," he said. "The kingdom of God is near. Repent and believe the good news!" LEB 16 And [as he] was passing by along the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew, Simon's brother, casting [a net] into the sea (for they were fishermen). NIV 16 As Jesus walked beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. LEB 17 And Jesus said to them, "{Follow} me and I will make you become fishers of people." NIV 17 "Come, follow me," Jesus said, "and I will make you fishers of men." LEB 18 And immediately they left their nets [and] followed him. NIV 18 At once they left their nets and followed him. LEB 19 And going on a little [farther], he saw James the [son] of Zebedee and his brother John, and they [were] in the boat mending the nets. NIV 19 When he had gone a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John in a boat, preparing their nets. LEB 20 And immediately he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men [and] went away after him. NIV 20 Without delay he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and followed him. LEB 21 And they went into Capernaum and immediately on the Sabbath he began to teach in the synagogue. NIV 21 They went to Capernaum, and when the Sabbath came, Jesus went into the synagogue and began to teach. LEB 22 And they were amazed at his teaching, because he was teaching them like one who had authority, and not like the scribes. NIV 22 The people were amazed at his teaching, because he taught them as one who had authority, not as the teachers of the law. LEB 23 And so then there was a man in their synagogue with an unclean spirit, and he cried out, NIV 23 Just then a man in their synagogue who was possessed by an evil spirit cried out, LEB 24 saying, "{Leave us alone}, Jesus the Nazarene! Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are--the Holy One of God!" NIV 24 "What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are--the Holy One of God!" LEB 25 And Jesus rebuked him, saying, "Be silent, and come out of him!" NIV 25 "Be quiet!" said Jesus sternly. "Come out of him!" LEB 26 And [after] convulsing him and crying out with a loud voice, the unclean spirit came out of him. NIV 26 The evil spirit shook the man violently and came out of him with a shriek. LEB 27 And they were all amazed, so that [they began] to discuss with one another, saying, "What is this? A new teaching with authority! He even commands the unclean spirits and they obey him." NIV 27 The people were all so amazed that they asked each other, "What is this? A new teaching--and with authority! He even gives orders to evil spirits and they obey him." LEB 28 And the report about him then went out everywhere in the whole surrounding region of Galilee. NIV 28 News about him spread quickly over the whole region of Galilee. LEB 29 And so then he departed from the synagogue [and] came into the house of Simon and Andrew with James and John. NIV 29 As soon as they left the synagogue, they went with James and John to the home of Simon and Andrew. LEB 30 Now Simon's mother-in-law was lying down, suffering with a fever, and at once they told him about her. NIV 30 Simon's mother-in-law was in bed with a fever, and they told Jesus about her. LEB 31 And he came [and] raised her up [by] taking hold of her hand, and the fever left her, and she began to serve them. NIV 31 So he went to her, took her hand and helped her up. The fever left her and she began to wait on them. LEB 32 Now [when it] was evening, when the sun had set, they began bringing to him all those {who were sick} and those who were demon-possessed. NIV 32 That evening after sunset the people brought to Jesus all the sick and demon-possessed. LEB 33 And the whole town was gathered together at the door. NIV 33 The whole town gathered at the door, LEB 34 And he healed many {who were sick} with various diseases and expelled many demons. And he did not permit the demons to speak, because they knew him. NIV 34 and Jesus healed many who had various diseases. He also drove out many demons, but he would not let the demons speak because they knew who he was. LEB 35 And getting up early in the morning [while it was] very dark, he departed and went to a deserted place, and there he was praying. NIV 35 Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed. LEB 36 And Simon and those [who were] with him searched diligently for him. NIV 36 Simon and his companions went to look for him, LEB 37 And they found him and said to him, "Everyone is looking for you!" NIV 37 and when they found him, they exclaimed: "Everyone is looking for you!" LEB 38 And he said to them, "Let us go elsewhere, into the neighboring rural towns, so that I can preach there also, because I have come out for this [very] reason." NIV 38 Jesus replied, "Let us go somewhere else--to the nearby villages--so I can preach there also. That is why I have come." LEB 39 And he went into all Galilee preaching in their synagogues and expelling demons. NIV 39 So he traveled throughout Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and driving out demons. LEB 40 And a leper came to him, entreating him and kneeling down, saying to him, "If you are willing, you are able to make me clean." NIV 40 A man with leprosy came to him and begged him on his knees, "If you are willing, you can make me clean." LEB 41 And becoming angry, he stretched out his hand [and] touched [him], and said to him, "I am willing; be made clean." NIV 41 Filled with compassion, Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. "I am willing," he said. "Be clean!" LEB 42 And immediately the leprosy went away from him and he was made clean. NIV 42 Immediately the leprosy left him and he was cured. LEB 43 And warning him sternly, he sent him away at once. NIV 43 Jesus sent him away at once with a strong warning: LEB 44 And he said to him, "See to it that you say nothing to anyone, but go, show yourself to the priest and bring for your cleansing [the things] which Moses commanded, for a testimony to them. NIV 44 "See that you don't tell this to anyone. But go, show yourself to the priest and offer the sacrifices that Moses commanded for your cleansing, as a testimony to them." LEB 45 But he went out [and] began to proclaim [it] freely and to spread abroad the account, so that he was no longer able to enter publicly into a town. But he was staying outside in deserted places, and they were coming to him from all directions. NIV 45 Instead he went out and began to talk freely, spreading the news. As a result, Jesus could no longer enter a town openly but stayed outside in lonely places. Yet the people still came to him from everywhere.
