WYC 1 The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. NIV 1 The beginning of the gospel about Jesus Christ, the Son of God. WYC 2 As it is written in Esaias, the prophet, Lo! I send mine angel before thy face, that shall make thy way ready before thee. NIV 2 It is written in Isaiah the prophet: "I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way"-- WYC 3 The voice of a crier in desert, Make ye ready the way of the Lord, make ye his paths right. [The voice of one crying in desert, Make ye ready the way of the Lord, make ye his paths rightful.] NIV 3 "a voice of one calling in the desert, 'Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him.' " WYC 4 John was in desert baptizing, and preaching the baptism of penance, into remission of sins. NIV 4 And so John came, baptizing in the desert region and preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. WYC 5 And all the country of Judaea went out to him, and all men of Jerusalem; and they were baptized of him in the flume Jordan [and were baptized of him in the flood of Jordan], acknowledging their sins. NIV 5 The whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem went out to him. Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River. WYC 6 And John was clothed with hairs of camels, and a girdle of skin was about his loins; and he ate honeysuckles, and wild honey, [+And John was clothed with hairs of camel, and a girdle of skin about his loins; and he ate locusts, and wild honey,] NIV 6 John wore clothing made of camel's hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. WYC 7 and preached, and said [saying], A stronger than I shall come after me, and I am not worthy to kneel down, and unloose [the thong of] his shoes. NIV 7 And this was his message: "After me will come one more powerful than I, the thongs of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie. WYC 8 I have baptized you in water; but he shall baptize you in the Holy Ghost. NIV 8 I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit." WYC 9 And it was done in those days, Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptized of John in Jordan. NIV 9 At that time Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. WYC 10 And at once he went up of the water, and saw heavens opened, and the Holy Ghost coming down as a culver [And anon he ascending up of the water, saw heavens opened, and the Spirit coming down as a culver], and dwelling on him. NIV 10 As Jesus was coming up out of the water, he saw heaven being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. WYC 11 And a voice was made from heavens, Thou art my loved Son, in thee I am pleased. NIV 11 And a voice came from heaven: "You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased." WYC 12 And at once the Spirit put him forth into desert. [And anon the Spirit putted out him into desert.] NIV 12 At once the Spirit sent him out into the desert, WYC 13 And he was in desert forty days and forty nights, and was tempted of Satan, and he was with beasts [and was with beasts], and angels ministered to him. NIV 13 and he was in the desert forty days, being tempted by Satan. He was with the wild animals, and angels attended him. WYC 14 But after that John was taken, Jesus came into Galilee, and preached the gospel of the kingdom of God [preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God], NIV 14 After John was put in prison, Jesus went into Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God. WYC 15 and said [and saying], That the time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God shall come nigh; do ye penance [repent ye], and believe ye to the gospel. NIV 15 "The time has come," he said. "The kingdom of God is near. Repent and believe the good news!" WYC 16 And as he passed beside the sea of Galilee, he saw Simon, and Andrew, his brother, casting their nets into the sea; for they were fishers. NIV 16 As Jesus walked beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. WYC 17 And Jesus said to them, Come ye after me; [and] I shall make you to be made fishers of men. NIV 17 "Come, follow me," Jesus said, "and I will make you fishers of men." WYC 18 And at once they left the nets, and followed him. [And anon the nets forsaken, they followed him.] NIV 18 At once they left their nets and followed him. WYC 19 And he went forth from thence a little, and saw James of Zebedee, and John, his brother, in a boat making their nets. [And he gone forth thence a little, saw James of Zebedee, and John, his brother, and them in the boat making nets.] NIV 19 When he had gone a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John in a boat, preparing their nets. WYC 20 And at once [And anon] he called them; and they left Zebedee, their father, in the boat with hired servants, and they followed him. NIV 20 Without delay he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and followed him. WYC 21 And they entered into Capernaum, and at once in the sabbaths [And they went forth into Capernaum, and anon in the sabbaths], he went into the synagogue, and taught them. NIV 21 They went to Capernaum, and when the Sabbath came, Jesus went into the synagogue and began to teach. WYC 22 And they wondered on his teaching; for he taught them, as he that had power, and not as [the] scribes. NIV 22 The people were amazed at his teaching, because he taught them as one who had authority, not as the teachers of the law. WYC 23 And in the synagogue of them was a man in an unclean spirit, and he cried out, NIV 23 Just then a man in their synagogue who was possessed by an evil spirit cried out, WYC 24 and said [saying], What to us and to thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? hast thou come to destroy us? I know that thou art the holy of God. NIV 24 "What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are--the Holy One of God!" WYC 25 And Jesus threatened him, and said [saying], Wax [thou] dumb, and go out of the man. NIV 25 "Be quiet!" said Jesus sternly. "Come out of him!" WYC 26 And the unclean spirit wrenching him, and crying with a great voice, went out from him. NIV 26 The evil spirit shook the man violently and came out of him with a shriek. WYC 27 And all men wondered, so that they sought within themselves, and said [And all men wondered, so that they asked among themselves, saying], What thing is this? what new doctrine is this? for in power he commandeth to unclean spirits, and they obey to him. NIV 27 The people were all so amazed that they asked each other, "What is this? A new teaching--and with authority! He even gives orders to evil spirits and they obey him." WYC 28 And the fame of him went forth at once [And the tale, or tiding, of him went forth anon] into all the country of Galilee. NIV 28 News about him spread quickly over the whole region of Galilee. WYC 29 And at once they went out of the synagogue, and came into the house of Simon and of Andrew, with James and John. [And anon they going out of the synagogue came into the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John.] NIV 29 As soon as they left the synagogue, they went with James and John to the home of Simon and Andrew. WYC 30 And the mother of Simon's wife lay sick in the fevers [lay sick in fevers]; and anon they say to him of her. NIV 30 Simon's mother-in-law was in bed with a fever, and they told Jesus about her. WYC 31 And he came nigh, and areared her [up], and when he had taken her hand, at once the fever left her, and she served them. [And he coming to, reared her up, the hand of her taken, and anon the fever left her, and she ministered to them.] NIV 31 So he went to her, took her hand and helped her up. The fever left her and she began to wait on them. WYC 32 But when the eventide was come, and the sun was gone down, they brought to him all that were of mal-ease, and them that had fiends. [Forsooth the evening made, when the sun went down, they brought to him all having evil, and having devils.] NIV 32 That evening after sunset the people brought to Jesus all the sick and demon-possessed. WYC 33 And all the city was gathered at the gate. NIV 33 The whole town gathered at the door, WYC 34 And he healed many, that had diverse sicknesses, and he cast out many fiends [And he healed many that were travailed with diverse sores, and he cast out many devils], and he suffered them not to speak, for they knew him. NIV 34 and Jesus healed many who had various diseases. He also drove out many demons, but he would not let the demons speak because they knew who he was. WYC 35 And he rose full early, and went out [And in the morrowing full early he rising], and went into a desert place, and prayed there. NIV 35 Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed. WYC 36 And Simon followed him, and they that were with him. NIV 36 Simon and his companions went to look for him, WYC 37 And when they had found him, they said to him, That all men seek thee. NIV 37 and when they found him, they exclaimed: "Everyone is looking for you!" WYC 38 And he said to them, Go we into the next towns and cities, that I preach also there, for thereto I came. NIV 38 Jesus replied, "Let us go somewhere else--to the nearby villages--so I can preach there also. That is why I have come." WYC 39 And he preached in the synagogues of them, and in all Galilee, and casted out fiends. NIV 39 So he traveled throughout Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and driving out demons. WYC 40 And a leprous man came to him, and besought [beseeching him], [and] kneeling, and said, If thou wilt, thou mayest cleanse me. NIV 40 A man with leprosy came to him and begged him on his knees, "If you are willing, you can make me clean." WYC 41 And Jesus had mercy on him, and stretched out his hand, and touched him, and said to him [Forsooth Jesus, having mercy on him, stretched out his hand, and, touching him, saith to him], I will, be thou made clean. NIV 41 Filled with compassion, Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. "I am willing," he said. "Be clean!" WYC 42 And when he had said this, at once [anon] the leprosy parted away from him, and he was cleansed. NIV 42 Immediately the leprosy left him and he was cured. WYC 43 And Jesus threatened him, and at once put him out, [And he threatened him, and anon cast him out,] NIV 43 Jesus sent him away at once with a strong warning: WYC 44 and said to him [and saith to him], See thou, say to no man; but go, show thee to the prince of priests, and offer for thy cleansing into witnessing to them, those things that Moses bade [and offer for thy cleansing those things that Moses bade, into witnessing to them]. NIV 44 "See that you don't tell this to anyone. But go, show yourself to the priest and offer the sacrifices that Moses commanded for your cleansing, as a testimony to them." WYC 45 And he went out, and began to preach, and to publish the word, so that now he might not go openly into the city [so that now he might not openly enter into the city], but be withoutforth in desert places; and they came to him on all sides. NIV 45 Instead he went out and began to talk freely, spreading the news. As a result, Jesus could no longer enter a town openly but stayed outside in lonely places. Yet the people still came to him from everywhere.
