Mark 13

MSG 1 As he walked away from the Temple, one of his disciples said, "Teacher, look at that stonework! Those buildings!" NIV 1 As he was leaving the temple, one of his disciples said to him, "Look, Teacher! What massive stones! What magnificent buildings!" MSG 2 Jesus said, "You're impressed by this grandiose architecture? There's not a stone in the whole works that is not going to end up in a heap of rubble." NIV 2 "Do you see all these great buildings?" replied Jesus. "Not one stone here will be left on another; every one will be thrown down." MSG 3 Later, as he was sitting on Mount Olives in full view of the Temple, Peter, James, John, and Andrew got him off by himself and asked, NIV 3 As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter, James, John and Andrew asked him privately, MSG 4 "Tell us, when is this going to happen? What sign will we get that things are coming to a head?" NIV 4 "Tell us, when will these things happen? And what will be the sign that they are all about to be fulfilled?" MSG 5 Jesus began, "Watch out for doomsday deceivers. NIV 5 Jesus said to them: "Watch out that no one deceives you. MSG 6 Many leaders are going to show up with forged identities claiming, 'I'm the One.' They will deceive a lot of people. NIV 6 Many will come in my name, claiming, 'I am he,' and will deceive many. MSG 7 When you hear of wars and rumored wars, keep your head and don't panic. This is routine history, and no sign of the end. NIV 7 When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. MSG 8 Nation will fight nation and ruler fight ruler, over and over. Earthquakes will occur in various places. There will be famines. But these things are nothing compared to what's coming. NIV 8 Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places, and famines. These are the beginning of birth pains. MSG 9 "And watch out! They're going to drag you into court. And then it will go from bad to worse, dog-eat-dog, everyone at your throat because you carry my name. You're placed there as sentinels to truth. NIV 9 "You must be on your guard. You will be handed over to the local councils and flogged in the synagogues. On account of me you will stand before governors and kings as witnesses to them. MSG 10 The Message has to be preached all across the world. NIV 10 And the gospel must first be preached to all nations. MSG 11 "When they bring you, betrayed, into court, don't worry about what you'll say. When the time comes, say what's on your heart - the Holy Spirit will make his witness in and through you. NIV 11 Whenever you are arrested and brought to trial, do not worry beforehand about what to say. Just say whatever is given you at the time, for it is not you speaking, but the Holy Spirit. MSG 12 "It's going to be brother killing brother, father killing child, children killing parents. NIV 12 "Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child. Children will rebel against their parents and have them put to death. MSG 13 There's no telling who will hate you because of me. "Stay with it - that's what is required. Stay with it to the end. You won't be sorry; you'll be saved. NIV 13 All men will hate you because of me, but he who stands firm to the end will be saved. MSG 14 "But be ready to run for it when you see the monster of desecration set up where it should never be. You who can read, make sure you understand what I'm talking about. If you're living in Judea at the time, run for the hills; NIV 14 "When you see 'the abomination that causes desolation' standing where it does not belong--let the reader understand--then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. MSG 15 if you're working in the yard, don't go back to the house to get anything; NIV 15 Let no one on the roof of his house go down or enter the house to take anything out. MSG 16 if you're out in the field, don't go back to get your coat. NIV 16 Let no one in the field go back to get his cloak. MSG 17 Pregnant and nursing mothers will have it especially hard. NIV 17 How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers! MSG 18 Hope and pray this won't happen in the middle of winter. NIV 18 Pray that this will not take place in winter, MSG 19 "These are going to be hard days - nothing like it from the time God made the world right up to the present. And there'll be nothing like it again. NIV 19 because those will be days of distress unequaled from the beginning, when God created the world, until now--and never to be equaled again. MSG 20 If he let the days of trouble run their course, nobody would make it. But because of God's chosen people, those he personally chose, he has already intervened. NIV 20 If the Lord had not cut short those days, no one would survive. But for the sake of the elect, whom he has chosen, he has shortened them. MSG 21 "If anyone tries to flag you down, calling out, 'Here's the Messiah!' or points, 'There he is!' don't fall for it. NIV 21 At that time if anyone says to you, 'Look, here is the Christ !' or, 'Look, there he is!' do not believe it. MSG 22 Fake Messiahs and lying preachers are going to pop up everywhere. Their impressive credentials and dazzling performances will pull the wool over the eyes of even those who ought to know better. NIV 22 For false Christs and false prophets will appear and perform signs and miracles to deceive the elect--if that were possible. MSG 23 So watch out. I've given you fair warning. NIV 23 So be on your guard; I have told you everything ahead of time. MSG 24 "Following those hard times, Sun will fade out, moon cloud over, NIV 24 "But in those days, following that distress, " 'the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; MSG 25 Stars fall out of the sky, cosmic powers tremble. NIV 25 the stars will fall from the sky, and the heavenly bodies will be shaken.' MSG 26 "And then they'll see the Son of Man enter in grand style, his Arrival filling the sky - no one will miss it! NIV 26 "At that time men will see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory. MSG 27 He'll dispatch the angels; they will pull in the chosen from the four winds, from pole to pole. NIV 27 And he will send his angels and gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of the heavens. MSG 28 "Take a lesson from the fig tree. From the moment you notice its buds form, the merest hint of green, you know summer's just around the corner. NIV 28 "Now learn this lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its twigs get tender and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near. MSG 29 And so it is with you. When you see all these things, you know he is at the door. NIV 29 Even so, when you see these things happening, you know that it is near, right at the door. MSG 30 Don't take this lightly. I'm not just saying this for some future generation, but for this one, too - these things will happen. NIV 30 I tell you the truth, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened. MSG 31 Sky and earth will wear out; my words won't wear out. NIV 31 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away. MSG 32 "But the exact day and hour? No one knows that, not even heaven's angels, not even the Son. Only the Father. NIV 32 "No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. MSG 33 So keep a sharp lookout, for you don't know the timetable. NIV 33 Be on guard! Be alert ! You do not know when that time will come. MSG 34 It's like a man who takes a trip, leaving home and putting his servants in charge, each assigned a task, and commanding the gatekeeper to stand watch. NIV 34 It's like a man going away: He leaves his house and puts his servants in charge, each with his assigned task, and tells the one at the door to keep watch. MSG 35 So, stay at your post, watching. You have no idea when the homeowner is returning, whether evening, midnight, cockcrow, or morning. NIV 35 "Therefore keep watch because you do not know when the owner of the house will come back--whether in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or at dawn. MSG 36 You don't want him showing up unannounced, with you asleep on the job. NIV 36 If he comes suddenly, do not let him find you sleeping. MSG 37 I say it to you, and I'm saying it to all: Stay at your post. Keep watch." NIV 37 What I say to you, I say to everyone: 'Watch!' "
