Mark 15

NAS 1 Early in the morning the chief priests with the elders and scribes and the whole Council, immediately held a consultation; and binding Jesus, they led Him away and delivered Him to Pilate. NIV 1 Very early in the morning, the chief priests, with the elders, the teachers of the law and the whole Sanhedrin, reached a decision. They bound Jesus, led him away and handed him over to Pilate. NAS 2 Pilate questioned Him, "Are You the King of the Jews?" And He answered him, "It is as you say." NIV 2 "Are you the king of the Jews?" asked Pilate. "Yes, it is as you say," Jesus replied. NAS 3 The chief priests began to accuse Him harshly. NIV 3 The chief priests accused him of many things. NAS 4 Then Pilate questioned Him again, saying, "Do You not answer? See how many charges they bring against You!" NIV 4 So again Pilate asked him, "Aren't you going to answer? See how many things they are accusing you of." NAS 5 But Jesus made no further answer; so Pilate was amazed. NIV 5 But Jesus still made no reply, and Pilate was amazed. NAS 6 Now at the feast he used to release for them any one prisoner whom they requested. NIV 6 Now it was the custom at the Feast to release a prisoner whom the people requested. NAS 7 The man named Barabbas had been imprisoned with the insurrectionists who had committed murder in the insurrection. NIV 7 A man called Barabbas was in prison with the insurrectionists who had committed murder in the uprising. NAS 8 The crowd went up and began asking him to do as he had been accustomed to do for them. NIV 8 The crowd came up and asked Pilate to do for them what he usually did. NAS 9 Pilate answered them, saying, "Do you want me to release for you the King of the Jews?" NIV 9 "Do you want me to release to you the king of the Jews?" asked Pilate, NAS 10 For he was aware that the chief priests had handed Him over because of envy. NIV 10 knowing it was out of envy that the chief priests had handed Jesus over to him. NAS 11 But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to ask him to release Barabbas for them instead. NIV 11 But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have Pilate release Barabbas instead. NAS 12 Answering again, Pilate said to them, "Then what shall I do with Him whom you call the King of the Jews?" NIV 12 "What shall I do, then, with the one you call the king of the Jews?" Pilate asked them. NAS 13 They shouted back, "Crucify Him!" NIV 13 "Crucify him!" they shouted. NAS 14 But Pilate said to them, "Why, what evil has He done?" But they shouted all the more, "Crucify Him!" NIV 14 "Why? What crime has he committed?" asked Pilate. But they shouted all the louder, "Crucify him!" NAS 15 Wishing to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas for them, and after having Jesus scourged, he handed Him over to be crucified. NIV 15 Wanting to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas to them. He had Jesus flogged, and handed him over to be crucified. NAS 16 The soldiers took Him away into the palace (that is, the Praetorium ), and they called together the whole Roman cohort. NIV 16 The soldiers led Jesus away into the palace (that is, the Praetorium) and called together the whole company of soldiers. NAS 17 They dressed Him up in purple, and after twisting a crown of thorns, they put it on Him; NIV 17 They put a purple robe on him, then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on him. NAS 18 and they began to acclaim Him, "Hail, King of the Jews!" NIV 18 And they began to call out to him, "Hail, king of the Jews!" NAS 19 They kept beating His head with a reed, and spitting on Him, and kneeling and bowing before Him. NIV 19 Again and again they struck him on the head with a staff and spit on him. Falling on their knees, they paid homage to him. NAS 20 After they had mocked Him, they took the purple robe off Him and put His own garments on Him. And they led Him out to crucify Him. NIV 20 And when they had mocked him, they took off the purple robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him out to crucify him. NAS 21 They pressed into service a passer-by coming from the country, Simon of Cyrene (the father of Alexander and Rufus ), to bear His cross. NIV 21 A certain man from Cyrene, Simon, the father of Alexander and Rufus, was passing by on his way in from the country, and they forced him to carry the cross. NAS 22 Then they brought Him to the place Golgotha, which is translated, Place of a Skull. NIV 22 They brought Jesus to the place called Golgotha (which means The Place of the Skull). NAS 23 They tried to give Him wine mixed with myrrh; but He did not take it. NIV 23 Then they offered him wine mixed with myrrh, but he did not take it. NAS 24 And they crucified Him, and divided up His garments among themselves, casting lots for them to decide what each man should take. NIV 24 And they crucified him. Dividing up his clothes, they cast lots to see what each would get. NAS 25 It was the third hour when they crucified Him. NIV 25 It was the third hour when they crucified him. NAS 26 The inscription of the charge against Him read, "THE KING OF THE JEWS." NIV 26 The written notice of the charge against him read: the king of the jews. NAS 28 [And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, "And He was numbered with transgressors."] NAS 29 Those passing by were hurling abuse at Him, wagging their heads, and saying, "Ha! You who are going to destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, NIV 29 Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads and saying, "So! You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days, NAS 30 save Yourself, and come down from the cross!" NIV 30 come down from the cross and save yourself !" NAS 31 In the same way the chief priests also, along with the scribes, were mocking Him among themselves and saying, "He saved others; He cannot save Himself. NIV 31 In the same way the chief priests and the teachers of the law mocked him among themselves. "He saved others," they said, "but he can't save himself ! NAS 32 "Let this Christ, the King of Israel, now come down from the cross, so that we may see and believe!" Those who were crucified with Him were also insulting Him. NIV 32 Let this Christ, this King of Israel, come down now from the cross, that we may see and believe." Those crucified with him also heaped insults on him. NAS 33 When the sixth hour came, darkness fell over the whole land until the ninth hour. NIV 33 At the sixth hour darkness came over the whole land until the ninth hour. NAS 34 At the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, "ELOI, ELOI, LAMA SABACHTHANI?" which is translated, "MY GOD, MY GOD, WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN ME?" NIV 34 And at the ninth hour Jesus cried out in a loud voice, ""Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani? ""--which means, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" NAS 35 When some of the bystanders heard it, they began saying, "Behold, He is calling for Elijah." NIV 35 When some of those standing near heard this, they said, "Listen, he's calling Elijah." NAS 36 Someone ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on a reed, and gave Him a drink, saying, "Let us see whether Elijah will come to take Him down." NIV 36 One man ran, filled a sponge with wine vinegar, put it on a stick, and offered it to Jesus to drink. "Now leave him alone. Let's see if Elijah comes to take him down," he said. NAS 37 And Jesus uttered a loud cry, and breathed His last. NIV 37 With a loud cry, Jesus breathed his last. NAS 38 And the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. NIV 38 The curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. NAS 39 When the centurion, who was standing right in front of Him, saw the way He breathed His last, he said, "Truly this man was the Son of God!" NIV 39 And when the centurion, who stood there in front of Jesus, heard his cry and saw how he died, he said, "Surely this man was the Son of God!" NAS 40 There were also some women looking on from a distance, among whom were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the Less and Joses, and Salome. NIV 40 Some women were watching from a distance. Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and Salome. NAS 41 When He was in Galilee, they used to follow Him and minister to Him; and there were many other women who came up with Him to Jerusalem. NIV 41 In Galilee these women had followed him and cared for his needs. Many other women who had come up with him to Jerusalem were also there. NAS 42 When evening had already come, because it was the preparation day, that is, the day before the Sabbath, NIV 42 It was Preparation Day (that is, the day before the Sabbath). So as evening approached, NAS 43 Joseph of Arimathea came, a prominent member of the Council, who himself was waiting for the kingdom of God; and he gathered up courage and went in before Pilate, and asked for the body of Jesus. NIV 43 Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent member of the Council, who was himself waiting for the kingdom of God, went boldly to Pilate and asked for Jesus' body. NAS 44 Pilate wondered if He was dead by this time, and summoning the centurion, he questioned him as to whether He was already dead. NIV 44 Pilate was surprised to hear that he was already dead. Summoning the centurion, he asked him if Jesus had already died. NAS 45 And ascertaining this from the centurion, he granted the body to Joseph. NIV 45 When he learned from the centurion that it was so, he gave the body to Joseph. NAS 46 Joseph bought a linen cloth, took Him down, wrapped Him in the linen cloth and laid Him in a tomb which had been hewn out in the rock; and he rolled a stone against the entrance of the tomb. NIV 46 So Joseph bought some linen cloth, took down the body, wrapped it in the linen, and placed it in a tomb cut out of rock. Then he rolled a stone against the entrance of the tomb. NAS 47 Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses were looking on to see where He was laid. NIV 47 Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses saw where he was laid.
